This hauntingly beautiful melody is probably the mostfamous to come from the pen of Czech composer,Antonin Dvorák. Stephen Bulla’s transcription of‘Largo’ from the ‘New World Symphony’ will helpyour students focus on expressive playing, and bringgreat delight to all with the soothing nostalgicmelody.

Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be ‘staged’ with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.

Marchissimo is een fantastisch openingsstuk voor elk concert, maar er zit wel een bijzondere wending aan! Het kan gewoon worden gespeeld zoals genoteerd, maar het is eigenlijk zo gecomponeerd dat muzikanten een voor een het podiumop kunnen komen voor ze beginnen te spelen. Het gaat hier in feite om drie marsen in één, waarbij steeds een deel van het orkest aan bod komt. Het stuk leidt naar een climax waarin alledrie de thema’s tegelijkertijd worden gespeld.

Marchi ssimo wurde als Eröffnung eines Konzerts geschrieben, da es einem Spieler nach dem Anderen Gelegenheit gibt, auf die Bühne zu treten. Im ersten Satz treten erst die Schlaginstrumente, zusammen mit Pikkoloflöte, Bassklarinette, Euphonium und Tuba auf. Im zweiten Satz kommen Posaune, Flöte, Klarinette und schließlich Saxophon hinzu. Im dritten Satz komplettieren die Hörner das Blasorchester, welches im fulminanten Schluss die Themen aller drei Sätze noch einmal aufnimmt. Mit Marchissimo ist ein wirkungsvoller Auftritt garantiert!

Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The _x001F_first movement begins with a lyrical fugato passage, framing a brisker and more rhythmical middle section. The second movement is slower and contains a long and expressive euphonium solo. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.

Sinfonie tta No. 4 bestaat uit drie in elkaar overlopende delen. Het eerste deel bestaat uit een lyrische fugato dat overgaat in een sneller en ritmisch gedeelte. In het tweede, trage deel, komt een prachtige euphoniumsolo aan bod. Het derde deel bevat een muzikale knipoog naar de opdrachtgever van het werk waarin de componist diverse slagwerk instrumenten geluiden na laat bootsen die uit een timmermanswekplaats lijken te komen.

Il s'ouvre avec un passage lyrique en style fugue qui enserre un passage central plus rapide et plus rythme. Dans le second mouvement, la musique est plus apaisee. Un magni_x001C_fique solo d'euphonium traverse la trame musicale. Le troisieme et dernier mouvement illustre les activites de l'entreprise commanditaire de l'oeuvre. On entend les bruits de l'atelier dans un passage pour multi-percussions, qui ornemente une texture orchestrale a l'unisson, proche du scat.

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for fanfare band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Deze oude melodie uit Wales werd in 1794 voor het eerst uitgegeven in Relics of the Welsh Bards. Dafydd (David) Owain was een beroemde bard uit Wales, hij woonde op een boerderij genaamd Gareg Wen (De witte rots) te Eifionyddin Carnarnvonshire, in Noord-Wales. It may be surprising to see a fanfare piece commissioned by a Japanese ensemble, since fanfare orchestras are typically found in Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, and also France and Switzerland. Senzoku Gakuen is one of the largest and mostprestigious music universities in Japan, and home to a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras. Since 2006 they have had a fanfare orchestra, which was started by Sotaru Fukaishi, a euphonium teacher who felt further performance opportunity wasneeded for saxhorn instruments. Fukaishi had loved the sound of fanfare orchestras ever since visiting the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland) several years earlier. Jan Van der Roost was involved with this new initiative from the beginning,and they were also joined by Manu Mellaerts for certain projects. The Dean of the music department, Professor Kazuo Tomioka, fully supports the ensemble and commissioned Ostinati. The première took place on June 11th at Maeda Hall inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki) where Senzoku Gakuen is based. The piece opens with an impressive timpani solo, followed by brass and saxophone. The rhythmical pulse remains constant and the music is fiery and assertive in character. A pentatonic melodygradually emerges and the music loses its vehemency and softens. The initial percussion ostinati subsequently recurs and the first section of the piece concludes in a similar mood to the opening. The second movement is sweet and melodic, opening witha long passage for the saxophone family in a minor key. The same theme then appears in the major and is developed upon; the music builds to a majestic orchestral forte, reminiscent of a pipe organ in its sonority. The theme returns in the originalminor key with a change in instrumentation leading the movement to a quiet and peaceful end on a soft E minor chord. The finale starts with percussion: a four-bar pattern is repeated several times over which the movement’s melodic themes areintroduced. These melodic elements are varied and used in different versions and the ostinato idea, which characterizes the entire piece, is highlighted. The theme travels through the orchestra, appearing on various instruments and in variousregisters. It may be surprising to see a fanfare piece commissioned by a Japanese ensemble, since fanfare orchestras are typically found in Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, and also France and Switzerland. Senzoku Gakuen is one of the largest and mostprestigious music universities in Japan, and home to a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras. Since 2006 they have had a fanfare orchestra, which was started by Sotaru Fukaishi, a euphonium teacher who felt further performance opportunity wasneeded for saxhorn instruments. Fukaishi had loved the sound of fanfare orchestras ever since visiting the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland) several years earlier. Jan Van der Roost was involved with this new initiative from the beginning,and they were also joined by Manu Mellaerts for certain projects. The Dean of the music department, Professor Kazuo Tomioka, fully supports the ensemble and commissioned Ostinati. The première took place on June 11th at Maeda Hall inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki) where Senzoku Gakuen is based. The piece opens with an impressive timpani solo, followed by brass and saxophone. The rhythmical pulse remains constant and the music is fiery and assertive in character. A pentatonic melodygradually emerges and the music loses its vehemency and softens. The initial percussion ostinati subsequently recurs and the first section of the piece concludes in a similar mood to the opening. The second movement is sweet and melodic, opening witha long passage for the saxophone family in a minor key. The same theme then appears in the major and is developed upon; the music builds to a majestic orchestral forte, reminiscent of a pipe organ in its sonority. The theme returns in the originalminor key with a change in instrumentation leading the movement to a quiet and peaceful end on a soft E minor chord. The finale starts with percussion: a four-bar pattern is repeated several times over which the movement’s melodic themes areintroduced. These melodic elements are varied and used in different versions and the ostinato idea, which characterizes the entire piece, is highlighted. The theme travels through the orchestra, appearing on various instruments and in variousregisters.
