This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

Der Schlusssatz, ein Allegro Molto Vivace, hätte die musikalische Beschreibung eines ausgelassenen Bauerntanzes während des Karnevalsumzugs in Halle sein können. In einem dem Heiligen Martin gewidmeten Triptychon ist es jedoch angemessener, in einerApotheose darauf zu verweisen, als Krönung des pastoralen Wirkens des Heiligen Martin, Bischof von Tours, Schutzheiliger des Auftraggebers und Stifter der Basilika in Halle.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. The final movement, Dundonnell, features two highly contrasting melodies, a wild presto and the bagpipe melody first heard in the first movement.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands schetst drie indrukwekkende muzikale beelden van de Schotse Hooglanden. Hoewel is gekozen voor een Schots thema, zijn er geen volksliedjes gebruikt. Het eerste deel, Ardross Castle, wordtgekenmerkt door solo’s voor klarinet en fagot of euphonium, voordat een doedelzakmelodie wordt ge ntroduceerd. Het tweede deel, Alladale, is een trio voor saxofoon waarin het slagwerk een belangrijke rol speelt. This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folktunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the Provence. The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some spicy notes (... just like the wellknown Provençal sauce! ...). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section.Every movement has its own character: Un Ange a fa la crido (= An angel brought the creed / credo) is like a bourrée, Adam e sa Coumpagnou (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, Lou Fustié (= the carpenter)a fast dance and finally Lis Escoubo (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention.

Dieses vierteilige Werk basiert auf alten Volksliedern aus der Provençe. Verschillende Franse volksliedjes vormden de basis voor dit werk. Petite Suite Française bestaat uit drie delen die verschillen van karakter: Chanson d’Auvergne is een volksdans. Deze sprankelende, energieke wals bevatde voor de zo typische dynamiek en levendigheid. Het tweede deel is ingetogen, intiem en zacht van karakter. Het laatste deel is gebaseerd op Le P’ti Quinquin, een bekend liedje uit het noorden van Frankrijk.Het tempo en de sfeer vormen een goede weergave van het karakter van de mensen die daar wonen. Een afwisselend werk met een Frans tintje!

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘Awakening Village’, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

Het driedelige werk Centenary 2019 werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem uit het Friese Sumar ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig jubileum van de vereniging in 2019. Het is gebaseerd op een plaatselijk volksliedje. In het eerste deel, ‘Awakening Village’, wordt verklankt hoe het dorp ontwaakt en tot leven komt. This three-part suite is rich in dances and full of contrasting styles and dynamics. The title of the work is a pun on the term ‘concerto grosso’, a piece in parts for a group of solo instruments and orchestra. In Contrasto Grosso small groups in the band perform as soloists, interpreting contrasting renaissance style fragments.

Deze dansrijke suite bestaat uit drie delen die worden gekenmerkt door contrasten in stijl, dynamiek en instrumentatie. De titel van de compositie is een woordspeling op het concerto grosso, een meerdelig werk voor een groep solo-instrumentenen orkest. Ook in Contrasto Grosso treden kleinere groepen in het orkest solistisch op met contrasterende, renaissancistische tussenfragmenten.

Contrasto Grosso est une suite dansante en trois mouvements de caractères et de styles variés. Le titre de l’œuvre dérive du terme concerto grosso, une forme musicale dont la structure se caractérise par une instrumentation alternant les passages orchestraux en tutti et les passages instrumentaux joués par des groupes solistes. Le changement de couleurs sonores et la diversité des nuances obtenus par cette alternance donnent l’œuvre une expressivité très contrastée. Dans chacun des trois mouvements de cette œuvre, Jacob de Haan confie de petits groupes solistes l’interprétatio n de fragments écrits dans le style de la musique de laRenaissance et qui offrent ainsi un contraste saisissant avec les passages en tutti basés sur une écriture classique ou traditionnelle.

Latin ABC is a suite in three movements inspired by the music of the Caribbean. The first movement is a joyful Curaçaon waltz, the second movement a sensual, slow salsa: a style that is popular on the island of Bonaire. Finally, Latin ABC culminates with a rousing march that brings the listener to sunny Aruba. This work is suitable for Grade 3 players, and showcases the percussion section in particular.

Dies alles findet im Rahmen einer gut spielbaren Komposition im mittleren Schwierigkeitsgrad statt, in der das Schlagzeug eine wichtige Rolle spielt.

Latin ABC s’ouvre par une valse allègre, où s’entrelacent un thème en 3/4 et un autre en 6/8. Le second mouvement apportera une touche traditionnelle avec une salsa lente et sensuelle. La pièce culmine avec une marche entraînante qui emmène l’auditeur au soleil d’Aruba. Le tout se déroule dans les limites d’une composition de niveau 3 où les percussions jouent un rôle important.

Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for concert band.

Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) kan als de eerste grote Amerikaanse componist worden beschouwd, hoewel hij zelf een hekel had aan het idee gezien te worden als nationaal musicus. MacDowell beschouwde muziek bij uitstek als een internationaletaal. Hij componeerde een grote hoeveelheid pianomuziek, evenals vele liederen en een aantal orkeststukken. Het is echter de bekoorlijke en pretentieloze suite van muzikale miniaturen, Woodland Sketches, die zijn bekendstewerk is geworden. Hiervan is het prachtige To a Wild Rose het populairst.

Philip Sparke bearbeitete dieses Stück des amerikanischen Komponisten Edward MacDowell, der weit über die Grenzen seines Heimatlandes hinaus berühmt ist. To a Wild Rose wurde seinem bekanntesten Werk, den Woodland Sketches, entnommen, einer Reihe anmutiger, unprätentiöser musikalischer Miniaturen. Hieraus ist To a Wild Rose das wohl populärste Stück, dessen Qualität Kritiker zu dem Urteil bewog, es sei so gut, wie der gesamte Rest von MacDowells Klaviermusik.

Edwa rd MacDowell (1860-1908) est considéré comme le premier grand compositeur américain de l’histoire de la musique, bien qu’il refusait avec vigueur d’être associé un quelconque courant musical nationaliste. Edward MacDowell a toujours considéré que la musique était une véritable langue internationale, et ses œuvres sont fortement influencées par le style de composition européen, et plus particulièrement par l’écriture allemande. Compositeur adulé de son vivant dans son pays natal et l’étranger, il était également un pianiste exceptionnel dont la virtuosité a impressionné l’un de ses plus brillants professeurs, Franz Liszt. Edward MacDowell a composé de nombreusesœuvres pour piano, un grand nombre de lieder ainsi que plusieurs œuvres orchestrales. Mais l’œuvre la plus connue de son répertoire est une charmante suite de miniatures musicales pour piano, Woodland Sketches, une composition modeste et stylistiquement simple dont est extraite la plus célèbre de ces miniatures To a Wild Rose (“ une rose sauvage”). L’étonnante sincérité de la mélodie fit dire un grand critique musical que cette mélodie valait toutes les œuvres pour piano réunies de MacDowell.
