Cittaslow is an international network of more than 220 towns in 30 countries. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafés, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognize the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns.

De aangesloten plaatsen zijn gemeenten waar mensen nieuwsgierig zijn naar vroeger, waar een rijke schakering aan theaters, pleinen, cafés, restaurants en spirituele plekken te vinden is, met een ongerept landschap en innemende ambachtslieden, waar mensen de langzame tred van de seizoenen nog herkennen en hun authentieke producten, ware smaak en gezondheid eerbiedigen. De Hymn of Cittaslow, in opdracht van deze organisatie gecomponeerd, is helemaal ge nspireerd op deze gedachte. Het tempo is uiteraard 'slow' en de thema's zijn herkenbaar. De muziek ademt enerzijds rust, maarklinkt ook groots in haar lyriek, die de schoonheid van de Cittaslow-gemeenten weerspiegelt.

Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people.

Litouwen, de grootste van de drie Baltische staten, is gezegend met een rijk cultureel erfgoed. Componist Jacob de Haan heeft The Heart of Lithuania gebaseerd op vijf volksmelodieën die met name geliefd waren in de tweede helftvan de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel alle vijf de liederen afkomstig zijn uit de Auk¹taitija-regio, zijn ze populair in heel Litouwen, ze worden nog altijd gezongen door jonge mensen in de steden en dorpen. Dit schitterende werk voertde luisteraar rechtstreeks naar de ziel van het Litouwse volk.

Petit territoire situé sur la rive orientale de la mer Baltique, la Lituanie est divisée en cinq régions ethnographiques : la Samogitie, la Haute Lituanie, la Sudovie, la Dzūkija et la Petite Lituanie. Chaque région a son dialecte, son costume traditionnel, ses coutumes, son artisanat, ses fêtes et jours fériés et surtout ses propres chants traditionnels chantés depuis près d’un millénaire. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanie”), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui. Le choix des chants et la diversité des émotions qu’ils expriment travers des lignes mélodiques typées emportent l’auditeur au cœur de l’ me lituanienne.

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

Op de gedenksteen in het Friese dorp Wons staat een erelijst (roll of honour) gegraveerd ter nagedachtenis aan de gevallenen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De titel van dit werk verwijst naar deze lijst. Deze compositie is echter tevens geschreven voor alle mensen die Wons hebben gemaakt tot wat het nu is: een prachtig dorpje vlak bij het IJsselmeer waar het prettig toeven is. De compositie begint met een statige inleiding, waarin het dorp zich presenteert aan de luisteraar. Dan klinkt een aansprekend ritmisch thema in een snel tempo dat de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid van voor de oorlog uitstraalt. Dit gaat over in een melodie in mineur, die het naderendeoorlogsgevaar aankondigt. Dan is er een grillig thema met stops waarin het schieten van de soldaten te horen is. Dit eindigt in enkele dissonante clusters die het tragische dieptepunt van de oorlog accentueren. De daaropvolgende stilte lost op in een gedragen middendeel in mineur waaruit enerzijds verdriet en anderzijds troost spreekt. Dan komt het snelle tempo van het begin weer terug, ditmaal in de vorm van een vreugdemars. De vrijheid wordt gevierd. Ook het thema van de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid is weer te horen. Diese Komposition wurde jedoch für alle Menschen geschrieben, die Wons zu dem gemacht haben, was es heute ist: ein schöner Ort nahe des IJsselmeeres, in dem es sich gut leben lässt. Das Werk beginnt mit einer feierlichen Einleitung, in welcher sich das Dorf dem Zuhörer präsentiert. Dann erklingt ein reizvolles rhythmisches und temporeiches Thema, das die Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit vor dem Krieg ausstrahlt. Ce monument a inspiré le titre de cette composition. Mais celle-ci a aussi été écrite pour toutes les personnes qui ont donné Wons son caractère d’aujourd’h ui : un joli village proche du lac d’IJssel où il fait bon vivre. La pièce débute par une introduction festive qui présente le village l’auditeur. S’ensuit un thème allègre et délicieusement rythmique qui reflète l’ambiance joyeuse, na ve et optimiste de l’avant-guerre. Puis nous entendons un motif sombre et fragmenté, représentant les fusillades ciblant les soldats. Cettepartie se termine par un faisceau de sons dissonants traduisant le caractère tragique de la guerre. Le calme revient avec un passage tranquille en mineur qui évoque la fois la frustration et l’apaisement. Le tempo du début est repris, cette fois sous la forme d’une marche victorieuse. Puis résonnent les accents premiers de gaieté, d’innocence et d’insouciance, invoquant la célébration de la liberté. Un thème martial et festif en hommage au village nous mène un pétillant finale.

This work was composed for a series of concerts that were characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. A typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are contained in this three-minute work.

This work was composed for a series of concerts that were characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. A typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are contained in this three-minute work.

His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn’t We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris’ seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for fanfare band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

In opdracht van het collegeorkest componeerde Jacob de Haan dit gevarieerde concertwerk vol metaforen. De structuur en discipline van de school horen we in de met toonherhaling gepaard gaande ritmische beweging in basregister en slagwerk. Het volgende, martiale thema staat symbool voor het doorlopen van de klassen. Een schertsende, humoristische versie van het hoofdthema ontbreekt niet: op school moet immers ook tijd zijn voor vrolijkheid. Het karakteristieke slotthema mondt uit in een feestelijke apotheose.

C’est pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de cet établissement que Jacob de Haan composa cette œuvre riche en métaphores. « J’ai tenté de décrire les valeurs de cette école. Ainsi, le thème initial se développe-t-il sur un motif rythmique imposant qui alterne entre les instruments graves et la batterie. Ce motif symbolise l’autorité et le cadre structuré de l’école. On retrouve ce thème plusieurs reprises et notamment sousune forme humoristique et espiègle : nous découvrons les bons côtés de l’école, la joie des élèves, les sentiments de fierté, d’amour et d’amitié. Autre élément thématique, une marche qui symbolise la progression des élèves dans leur cursus pour arriver leurs examens de fin d'étude. » En guise de conclusion, Jacob de Haan nous offre un thème grandiose qui s’élargit en apothéose.
