On a war
memorial in the Dutch
village of Wons is
engraved a list of names
to honour the fallen in
World War II. This is the
basis for the name of
this piece. However, this
composition was written
for everyone who has made
Wons what it is today: a
pretty place near to Lake
IJssel with a
comfortable way of life.
The piece begins with a
celebratory introduction
in which the village is
presented to the
listener. There follows a
delightful rhythmic and
high-tempo theme that
reflects the happiness,
innocence and carefree
atmosphere before the
war. Now we hear a moody,
fragmented theme
depicting soldiers
shooting. This is brought
to a close with dissonant
clusters of
sound,intoning the
dreadful tragedy of the
war. The ensuing quiet
gives way to a calm
middle section in a minor
key that portrays both
frustration and
consolation. The fast
tempo of the beginning
returns, this time in the
form of a victory march.
We hear freedom being
celebrated. We hear the
previous happy, innocent
and carefree themes, too.
There follows a festive,
martial theme, a tribute
to the village, before
the piece closes with
sounds of celebration.

compositie is echter

prettig toeven is. De
compositie begint met een
statige inleiding, waarin
het dorp zich presenteert
aan de luisteraar. Dan
klinkt een aansprekend
ritmisch thema in een
snel tempo dat de
vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid van voor de
oorlog uitstraalt. Dit
gaat over in een melodie
in mineur, die het
naderendeoorlogsgevaar
aankondigt. Dan is er een
grillig thema met stops
waarin het schieten van
de soldaten te horen is.
Dit eindigt in enkele
dissonante clusters die
het tragische dieptepunt
van de oorlog
accentueren. De
daaropvolgende stilte
lost op in een gedragen
middendeel in mineur
waaruit enerzijds
verdriet en anderzijds
troost spreekt. Dan komt
het snelle tempo van het

in de vorm van een
vreugdemars. De vrijheid
wordt gevierd. Ook het
thema van de vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid is weer te
horen. Er volgt nu een
statig martiaal thema,
een eerbetoon aan het
dorp, waarna het werk
wordt afgesloten met
feestelijke klanken.

The Odyssee
tells the story of
Odysseus, the undaunted
hero. In times long
ago the blind poet Homer
wrote this famous epic.
The Odyssey follows
the Iliad, the story of
the bloody war between
the Greek and the
Trojans. This battle
endsafter ten years
thanks to the Odysseys
famous trick. the Trojan
Horse. The Odyssey
is not a war epic, but a
story about perseverance,
loyalty, adventure, and
the survival instinct of
its ingenious hero.
In The Odyssey, Homer
describes howOdysseus,
the king of Ithaca, had
to endure another ten
years of affliction after
the ten years of war in
Troy before he could
finally return to his
home land. During
those years, his wife,
Penelope, had to try and
keep her many admirers
away.These men not only
wanted het hand but also
the kingship. To prove
her husbands worth, she
played a trick: As soon
as I have finished
weaving this shroud for
my father-in-law,
Laertes, I will choose
one of you to become my
husband, she
promisedthem. But
during the night, she
secretly loosened what
she had woven during the
day, prolonging the time
until Odysseus would
finally return. After
twenty long years, when
he finally stood at the
door, she wondered: Is
this really my husband?
Ishe an imposter?
Cunningly, she asked him
to move the bed, because
only she and her husband
know that the bed was
immovable and was build
around an old three
trunk! Odysseus was
deeply moved: this really
was his wife, his
Penelope! Nearly
threethousands years
later, the loyalty and
strength of this
character, and all the
dangerous adventures that
Odysseus survived thanks
to courage and
intelligence, still moves
us today.
Odyssee
by Jan Bosveld is not
just an adventure story,
butrather a
characteristic piece in
which memories of Homers
story can be heard.
The composition opens
with a firm, stirring
theme describing our
hero, Odysseus, in
detail: This man is not
to be taken lightly.
The further
development of thisshort
introduction completes
this character sketch:
trustworthy, perseverant,
and a genius. After
that we can picture
Odysseus on the lonely
beach of Ogygia. Do the
trumpets depict his
memories of the war of
Troy? Does he think of
his wife, as werecognise
the weaving loom of
Penelope in the murmuring
eighth? In the
solemn, plaintive part
that follows, we can
imagine Penelope feeling
lonely, sitting in the
womens room with her
servants.One of the girls
plays the harp, but that
does notclear the sombre
atmosphere. Then we can
imagine seeing the
sorceress Circe, who
changed Odysseus men into
swine. After she gives a
simple magic sign
something follows that
reminds us of the sound
of pigs grunting. Then
the Odysseus theme
resounds:the hero comes
to savi his comrades.
Assisted by Hermes, he
forces Circe to lift the
spell. The piece ends
the same way as it began,
with an animated theme:
Odysseus is still the
same, undefeated and not
to be taken
lighty!

comes to an end. This day
in the theme park is
over, but we have a lot
new experiences to talk
about! The memories of
all the funny and
spectacular rides will
come up when we walk
through the park to
theexit. Just one look
over the shoulder, the
amusement park figures
are waving at us.
Hopefully we will come
back again
soon!

Whereas ‘Auld
Lang Syne’ may be
considered the best-known
Scottish song ever, yet
at the same time it is an
obscure one, for there
are but few people who
know the complete text by
heart. After the
familiar ‘Should auld
acquaintance be forgot
.....‘ many people take
their refuge to lyrics
like ‘rum tee dum ta
dee ..... lah, lah, lah
........... for auld lang
syne’. Even in
Scotland only a handful
of persons know the
entire text and are able
to give a correct
rendering of it. The
current lyrics have been
attributed to the
Scottish poet Robert
Burns. Burns, however, he
did not write the whole
poem : after he had heard
an old man sing the
centuries-old
Scotchballad, he wrote it
down and added a number
of stanzas (1788).
Historical research
teaches us that the
ballad served many
purposes, both political
and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang
Syne’ is sung as a
Christmas Carol and it is
also sung on New Year’s
Eve at the turning of the
year. Apart from that,
though, the song is also
sung on many other
occasions sometimes with
different lyrics, which
usually have Love,
Friendship and/or Parting
as their themes, as these
go well with the
fascinating melody.
In this arrangement
a low-sounding solo
instrument is central.
The harmonization in the
accompaniment fits in
perfectly with the
sentiments this song will
evoke.

enkele verzen toegevoegd
(1788). Historisch

ballade voorveel
doeleinden gebruikt werd,
voor politieke als ook
religieuze doelen.

‘Auld Lang Syne’
gebruikt als Christmas

The word
‘tsunami’ is of
Japanese origin. When you
look it up in a
dictionary, you will find
that it means ‘a great
sea wave produced by
submarine earth movement
or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the
superlative of this
awesome expressionof
power that nature can
create, and has
catastrophic
consequences.
When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrousconsequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions of
many countries for miles
around. The tsunamitook
the lives of thousands of
people and destroyed many
villages and
towns.
There are
more areas which run the
risk of being struck by a
tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceaniccrust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressiveatmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,
suggesting the calm
before the storm.
Suddenly a short
climax (glissandi in the
trombone part) indicates
the seaquake, and the
megatsunami isa fact.
Hereafter follows a
turbulent passage
symbolising the huge
rolling waves. After
nature’s force has
spent itself, resignation
sets in and the
composition ends with a
majestic ode to
nature.
Het woord
tsunami is afkomstig uit
het Japans. Het
woordenboek geeft als
betekenis: een vloedgolf
als gevolg van een
onderzeese aardbeving.
Een megatsunami is de
overtreffende trap van
deze vorm van
natuurgeweld en heeft
catastrofale
gevolgen.
Toen
Carl Wittrock deze
compositie voltooide
waren er nog niet veel
voorbeelden van
dergelijke grote
bevingen, maar inmiddels
weten we maar al te goed
welke desastreuze
gevolgen een tsunami kan
veroorzaken. Op 26
december 2004 vond ereen
zware beving plaats in de
zee nabij het
Indonesische eiland
Sumatra. Vloedgolven van
wel 10 meter hoog
teisterden de kuststreken
van menig land in de
verre omtrek. De tsunami
eiste duizenden
mensenlevens en
verwoestte vele dorpen
ensteden.
Er zijn
meer gebieden waar sprake
is van een directe
dreiging, zoals op het
eiland La Palma, één
van de Canarische
eilanden. Dit eiland ligt
op een breukvlak en is
daarmee een tijdbom van
de natuur. Bij een
calamiteit als
eenmegatsunami zijn de
gevolgen niet te
overzien. In het
geval van La Palma
begeeft de vloedgolf van
enkele honderden meters
zich richting Zuid
Amerika met alle gevolgen
van dien. Tot ongeveer 50
kilometer landinwaarts
heeft de megatsunami
eenallesverwoestende
werking.
In de
compositie schetst
Wittrock een gewone dag
die ongewoon zal aflopen.
Al vanaf het begin hangt
er iets in de lucht en is
er sprake van een
dreigende, beklemmende
sfeer. Themas worden
onderbroken
doorplotselinge
afbrekingen en stiltes.
Opeens is daar de korte
climax (glissandi in
trombones) die de beving
symboliseert en de
megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte
vangt aan, daarmee de
rollende, voortstuwende
golven symboliserend. Na
hetnatuurgeweld is er
berusting en The Power of
the Megatsunami wordt
afgesloten met een
majestueuze ode aan de
natuur.

Nicolai
Rimsky-Korsakov
(1844-1908) came from an
aristocratic family which
lived near Novgorod.
When he appeared to be
musically gifted as a
child, his parents did
not hesitate one moment
to map out a more
honourable profession for
him he wasto make a
career in the navy as a
marine officer.
Rimsky-Korsakov,
however, succeeded in
secretly studying the
cello next to his studies
at the Naval Academy at
St Petersburg. Through
his cello teacher he came
into contact with the
composerBalakirev. In
this way he suddenly
became a member of The
Mighty Five (a group of
Russian composers
consisting of Balakirev,
Moussorgsky, Cui, Borodin
and Rimsky-Korsakov
himself).
Rimsky-Korsakov turned
out to be so talented
that he evenbecame a
teacher at the St
Petersburg
Conservatory.
‘P
rocession of the
Nobles’ comes from the
opera-ballet
‘Mlada’. The opera
has a remarkable history,
for between 1868 and 1870
five different composers
worked on this
project. The
finalresult was never
executed, however.
Twenty years later
Rimsky-Korsakov started
work on the opera once
more and composed his own
version of Mlada.The
theme of the opera is a
tragic love story that is
set in the early Middle
Ages in a realm on
theBaltic Sea. In
‘Processsion of the
Nobles’ all the
princesses of the country
gather for a grand feast
on the occasion of the
summer
holidays.
Nicolai
Rimsky-Korsakov
(1844-1908) stamde uit
een aristocratische
familie in de buurt van
Novgorod. Toen al
spoedig bleek dat hij
muzikaal erg begaafd was,
waren zijn ouders er als
de kippen bij om voor hem
een eerbaarder loopbaan
uit testippelen: een
carrière als
marine-officier was voor
hem weggelegd.
Rimsky-Korsakov zag
echter kans naast zijn
studies aan de
Marineschool van
Sint-Petersburg tevens in
het geheim cello te
studeren. Zijn
clandestine leraar bracht
hem in contactmet
Balakirev. Op die
manier behoorde hij plots
tot het ‘Machtige
Hoopje’ (een groep
Russische componisten
bestaande uit: Balakirev,
Moussorgsky, Cui, Borodin
en Rimsky-Korsakov).
Rimsky-Korsakov bleek
zoveel talent te hebben
dat hij zelfsleraar aan
het conservatorium
werd.
‘Processio
n of the Nobles’ is
afkomstig uit de
ballet-opera ‘Mlada’.
Deze opera heeft een
merkwaardige
geschiedenis. Tussen
1868 en 1870 hebben vijf
verschillende componisten
aan dit project
gewerkt.Het eindresultaat
werd echter nooit
uitgevoerd. Twintig
jaar later heeft
Rimsky-Korsakov de draad
weer opgepakt en zijn
eigen versie van Mlada
gemaakt. Het thema van
de opera is een tragisch
liefdesverhaal dat zich
afspeelt in de
vroegeMiddeleeuwen in een
gebied aan de Baltische
Zee. In Procession of the
Nobles verzamelen alle
prinsessen van het land
zich voor een groot feest
ter gelegenheid van de
zomervakantie.

Glitter and

people, a lot of Bling
Bling and fast cars
images like these will
cross our minds when we
think of the movie world.
However, reality proves
to be different : as a
rule, a tremendous amount
of work will have been
done on the set before a
film is ready to be shown
on the big screen. A
visit to an actual movie
set inspired John Emerson
Blackstone to write a
composition bearing the
same name. He had both
seen a number of
characteristic attributes
and heard the typical
phrases used in film
making, and he
incorporated them into
‘On the Movie Set’
.
In the first
part, ‘The
Clapboard’, a
‘director’s
assistant’ is supposed
to shout “Quieton the
set’” and
“Action!”, as is done
before a real scene is
shot. Subsequently, in
order to create the right
atmosphere, the clacking
of a ‘Clapboard’
should be heard.
During a romantic scene
we should be transported
to another world by means
of sweet sounds in the
background, so romantic
music is of course heard
in the next part, ‘Love
Scene’. At the end
of a long working day
‘It’s a wrap’ is
called on the set to
inform everyone that the
filming on that day is
completed.
Now
there is only one more
thing left to dream of :
an Oscar.....
Perf. Note: The use
of the right props will
add to the performance
and appreciation of ‘On
the Movie Set’. A red
carpet and a glamorous
reception should give
your audience the feeling
they are attending a real
‘opening night’!
‘Glamour’ en
‘Glitter’, mooie
mensen, veel ‘bling
bling’ en snelle
auto’s. Zomaar een
aantal zaken waar we aan
denken als het om de
filmwereld gaat. Maar
voordat de film klaar is
voor de bioscoop moet er
doorgaans hard gewerkt
wordentijdens het draaien
op de filmset. Een
bezoekje op een filmset
inspireerde John Emerson
Blackstone tot het
schrijven van ‘On the
Movieset’. Hij zag een
aantal zeer
karakteristieke
attributen en hoorde
kreten die hij
verwerktein deze
compositie.
In
het eerste deel: ‘The
Clapboard’, is het de
bedoeling dat de
assistent van de
regisseur ‘de bekende
kreten’ (Quiet on the
set of And Action!)
roept, voordat er een
take opgenomen wordt.
Daarnamoet natuurlijk met
een ‘Clapboard’
geklakt worden. Bij
een ‘Love Scene’
hoort uiteraard
sfeerverhogende
romantische muziek. Want
zwijmelen bij een film
gaat nu eenmaal niet
zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van
eenlange dag klinkt
altijd ‘It’s a
wrap’. Dit betekent dat
het laatste shot van de
dag gemaakt is.
Nu maar hopen dat er een
oscar in het verschiet
ligt.
Perf.
Note: Het gebruik van
de juiste rekwisieten
zalde uitvoering en
waardering van ‘On the
Movieset’ ten goede
komen. Een rode loper en
een chique ontvangst
zullen uw gasten een echt
‘premi?re’ gevoel
geven.

composition bearing the
same name. He had both
seen a number of
characteristic attributes
and heard the typical
phrases used in film
making, and he
incorporated them into
‘On the Movie Set’
.
In the first
part, ‘The
Clapboard’, a
‘director’s
assistant’ is supposed
to shout “Quieton the
set’” and
“Action!”, as is done
before a real scene is
shot. Subsequently, in
order to create the right
atmosphere, the clacking
of a ‘Clapboard’
should be heard.
During a romantic scene
we should be transported
to another world by means
of sweet sounds in the
background, so romantic
music is of course heard
in the next part, ‘Love
Scene’. At the end
of a long working day
‘It’s a wrap’ is
called on the set to
inform everyone that the
filming on that day is
completed.
Now
there is only one more
thing left to dream of :
an Oscar.....
Perf. Note: The use
of the right props will
add to the performance
and appreciation of ‘On
the Movie Set’. A red
carpet and a glamorous
reception should give
your audience the feeling
they are attending a real
‘opening night’!
‘Glamour’ en
‘Glitter’, mooie
mensen, veel ‘bling
bling’ en snelle
auto’s. Zomaar een
aantal zaken waar we aan
denken als het om de
filmwereld gaat. Maar
voordat de film klaar is
voor de bioscoop moet er
doorgaans hard gewerkt
wordentijdens het draaien
op de filmset. Een
bezoekje op een filmset
inspireerde John Emerson
Blackstone tot het
schrijven van ‘On the
Movieset’. Hij zag een
aantal zeer
karakteristieke
attributen en hoorde
kreten die hij
verwerktein deze
compositie.
In
het eerste deel: ‘The
Clapboard’, is het de
bedoeling dat de
assistent van de
regisseur ‘de bekende
kreten’ (Quiet on the
set of And Action!)
roept, voordat er een
take opgenomen wordt.
Daarnamoet natuurlijk met
een ‘Clapboard’
geklakt worden. Bij
een ‘Love Scene’
hoort uiteraard
sfeerverhogende
romantische muziek. Want
zwijmelen bij een film
gaat nu eenmaal niet
zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van
eenlange dag klinkt
altijd ‘It’s a
wrap’. Dit betekent dat
het laatste shot van de
dag gemaakt is.
Nu maar hopen dat er een
oscar in het verschiet
ligt.
Perf.
Note: Het gebruik van
de juiste rekwisieten
zalde uitvoering en
waardering van ‘On the
Movieset’ ten goede
komen. Een rode loper en
een chique ontvangst
zullen uw gasten een echt
‘premi?re’ gevoel
geven.

Nicolai
Rimsky-Korsakov
(1844-1908) came from an
aristocratic family which
lived near Novgorod.
When he appeared to be
musically gifted as a
child, his parents did
not hesitate one moment
to map out a more
honourable profession for
him he was to make a
career in the navy as a
marine officer.
Rimsky-Korsakov,
however, succeeded in
secretly studying the
cello next to his studies
at the Naval Academy at
St Petersburg. Through
his cello teacher he came
into contact with the
composer Balakirev.
In this way he
suddenly became a member
of The Mighty Five (a
group of Russian
composers consisting of
Balakirev, Moussorgsky,
Cui, Borodin and
Rimsky-Korsakovhimself).<
br> Rimsky-Korsakov
turned out to be so
talented that he even
became a teacher at the
St Petersburg
Conservatory.
‘P
rocession of the
Nobles’ comes from the
opera-ballet
‘Mlada’. The opera
has a remarkable history,
for between 1868 and 1870
five different composers
worked on this
project. The final
result was never
executed, however.
Twenty years later
Rimsky-Korsakov started
work on the opera once
more and composed his own
version of Mlada.The
theme of the opera is a
tragic love story that is
set in the early Middle
Ages in a realm on the
Baltic Sea. In
‘Processsion of the
Nobles’ all the
princesses of the country
gather for a grand feast
on the occasion of the
summer holidays.
Nicolai
Rimsky-Korsakov
(1844-1908) stamde uit
een aristocratische
familie in de buurt van
Novgorod. Toen al
spoedig bleek dat hij
muzikaal erg begaafd was,
waren zijn ouders er als
de kippen bij om voor hem
een eerbaarder
loopbaanuit te stippelen:
een carri?re als
marine-officier was voor
hem weggelegd.
Rimsky-Korsakov zag
echter kans naast zijn
studies aan de
Marineschool van
Sint-Petersburg tevens in
het geheim cello te
studeren. Zijn
clandestineleraar bracht
hem in contact met
Balakirev. Op die
manier behoorde hij plots
tot het ‘Machtige
Hoopje’ (een groep
Russische componisten
bestaande uit: Balakirev,
Moussorgsky, Cui, Borodin
en Rimsky-Korsakov).
Rimsky-Korsakovbleek
zoveel talent te hebben
dat hij zelfs leraar aan
het conservatorium
werd.
‘Processio
n of the Nobles’ is
afkomstig uit de
ballet-opera ‘Mlada’.
Deze opera heeft een
merkwaardige
geschiedenis. Tussen
1868 en1870 hebben vijf
verschillende componisten
aan dit project gewerkt.
Het eindresultaat werd
echter nooit uitgevoerd.
Twintig jaar later
heeft Rimsky-Korsakov de
draad weer opgepakt en
zijn eigen versie van
Mlada
gemaakt. Hetthema van
de opera is een tragisch
liefdesverhaal dat zich
afspeelt in de vroege
Middeleeuwen in een
gebied aan de Baltische
Zee. In 'Procession of
the Nobles' verzamelen
alle prinsessen van het
land zich voor een groot
feest tergelegenheid van
de zomervakantie.

This
musical fantasy depicts
the history of the Dutch
fortified town of Elburg.
The work begins with an
atmospheric medieval
picture of the Convent of
St Agnes, the nunnery
that was built in the
first half of the 15th
century. We hear the
sound of the convent
bells together with an
upward motif, which will
reappear later in the
work. Next, the rest of
Elburg is featured,
including the fortress -
from which the bells of
the Sint-Nicolaaskerk
(Saint Nicholas Church)
are ringing. Then,
cheerful sounds can be
heard at the Vischpoort
(Fish Gate), where a
dancing group is
performing a 16th century
French folk dance (a
branle des chevaux). We
also hear old wagons
rumbling over the
town’scobble
stones. Trade made this
Hanseatic town a lively
place. The repetitive
upward motif first heard
in the introduction now
develops into a more
distinct feature,
reflecting the mercantile
spirit of the town
residents.Then follows
the slow middle movement,
in which the clock has
been turned back to the
time when Elburg was
still lying on the
Zuiderzee (which was a
bay of the North Sea),
and was struggling with
floods. After the second
St. Marcellus Flood
(1362) and the water
flood of 1367 it was
decided that the town
would be relocated. We
now hear the theme of
branle des chevaux in a
minor key, followed by a
death bell sounding in
remembrance of the
drowned citizens of the
former town. Back in our
own time, a slow,
expressive theme in
Baroque style mirrors
Elburg’s tranquil
places, such as the
Feithenhof (Feithen
Court) and the
Weduwenhofje (Widow
Court). Then the bustle
returns with motifs from
the introduction,
followed by an attractive
theme in which
present-day Elburg is
portrayed with its many
tourists. Now, suddenly,
there is an echo from the
past, depicting the
dramatic floods and wars
that once plagued the
town. This leads to the
grand closing theme:
branle des chevaux
is heard for a final time
from the perspective of
the historic town centre.
Deze muzikale
fantasie vertelt de
geschiedenis van de
Nederlandse vestingstad
Elburg. Het werk begint
met een middeleeuws
sfeerbeeld vanuit het
Agnietenklooster, het
nonnenklooster dat in de
eerste helft van de 15e
eeuw werd gebouwd. We
horen de kloosterklok
samen met een opwaarts
motief, dat ook later in
het werk terugkomt.
Vervolgens komt de rest
van Elburg aan bod,
inclusief de vesting -
van waaruit de klokken
van de Grote of
Sint-Nicolaaskerk
weergalmen. Dan klinken
bij de Vischpoort de
vrolijke geluiden van een
dansgroep die daar een
16e-eeuwse Franse
volksdans (branle des
chevaux) uitvoert.
Ook horen we oude karren
over de kinderkopjes van
de stad denderen.
Dehandel maakt deze
Hanzestad tot een
levendige plaats. Het
zich steeds herhalende
opwaartse motief uit de
inleiding krijgt hier een
nadrukkelijker karakter
en verbeeldt de
handelsgeest van de
stedelingen.Dan volgt het
langzame middendeel,
waarin de klok wordt
teruggedraaid naar de
tijd dat Elburg nog
direct aan de Zuiderzee
lag en te kampen had met
overstromingen. Na de
tweede
Sint-Marcellusvloed
(1362) en de watervloed
van 1367 werd besloten
dat de stad verplaatst
zou worden. We horen het
thema van de branle des
chevaux in mineur,
gevolgd door een
doodsklok, die de
verdronken inwoners van
de voormalige stad
herdenkt. Terug in onze
eigen tijd verklankt een
langzaam, expressief
thema in barokke stijl de
verstilde plekken in de
stad, zoals het
Feithenhof en het
Weduwenhofje. Dan keert
de levendigheid terug met
motieven uit de
inleiding, gevolgd door
een aansprekend thema
waarin het Elburg van nu
met zijn vele toeristen
doorklinkt. Plotseling is
er dan nog even een echo
uit het verleden: de
dramatiek van de
overstromingen en
oorlogen die de stad ooit
teisterden. Hieruit
vloeit het grootse
slotthema voort: de
branle des chevaux is
voor de laatste keer te
horen vanuit het
perspectief van de
historische
binnenstad.
