It may be
surprising to see a
fanfare piece
commissioned by a
Japanese ensemble, since
fanfare orchestras are
typically found in
Belgium, Holland and
Luxembourg, and also
France and Switzerland.
Senzoku Gakuen is one of
the largest and
mostprestigious music
universities in Japan,
and home to a wide
variety of ensembles and
orchestras. Since 2006
they have had a fanfare
orchestra, which was
started by Sotaru
Fukaishi, a euphonium
teacher who felt further
performance opportunity
wasneeded for saxhorn
instruments. Fukaishi had
loved the sound of
fanfare orchestras ever
since visiting the World
Music Contest in Kerkrade
(Holland) several years
earlier. Jan Van der
Roost was involved with
this new initiative from
the beginning,and they
were also joined by Manu
Mellaerts for certain
projects. The Dean of the
music department,
Professor Kazuo Tomioka,
fully supports the
ensemble and commissioned
Ostinati. The
première took place on
June 11th at Maeda Hall
inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki)
where Senzoku Gakuen is
based. The piece opens
with an impressive
timpani solo, followed by
brass and saxophone. The
rhythmical pulse remains
constant and the music is
fiery and assertive in
character. A pentatonic
melodygradually emerges
and the music loses its
vehemency and softens.
The initial percussion
ostinati subsequently
recurs and the first
section of the piece
concludes in a similar
mood to the opening. The
second movement is sweet
and melodic, opening
witha long passage for
the saxophone family in a
minor key. The same theme
then appears in the major
and is developed upon;
the music builds to a
majestic orchestral
forte, reminiscent of a
pipe organ in its
sonority. The theme
returns in the
originalminor key with a
change in instrumentation
leading the movement to a
quiet and peaceful end on
a soft E minor chord. The
finale starts with
percussion: a four-bar
pattern is repeated
several times over which
the movement’s
melodic themes
areintroduced. These
melodic elements are
varied and used in
different versions and
the ostinato idea, which
characterizes the entire
piece, is highlighted.
The theme travels through
the orchestra, appearing
on various instruments
and in variousregisters.
It captures the
listener’s
attention and displays
the full range of sound
and colour within the
fanfare
orchestra.
Het is
misschien verrassend dat
dit fanfarewerk is

opdracht tot het
schrijven van
Ostinati. De
première vond plaats
op 11 juni in de Maeda
Hall in Mizonokuchi
(Kawasaki), waar Senzoku
Gakuen is gevestigd. Het
werk begint met een
indrukwekkendepaukensolo,
gevolgd door koper en
saxofoon. De ritmische
puls blijft constant, en
de aard van de muziek is
vurig en krachtig.
Geleidelijk komt er een
pentatonische melodie
naar voren en wordt de
muziek minder heftig, ze
wordtzachter van
karakter. De
aanvankelijke ostinati in
het slagwerk verschijnen
dan opnieuw, waarna het
eerste deel van het werk
eindigt in dezelfde sfeer
als waarmee het begon.
Het tweede deel is
lieflijk en melodisch.
Het opentmet een lange
passage voor de saxofoons
in een mineurtoonsoort.
Dan klinkt hetzelfde
thema in majeur en daar
wordt op voortgeborduurd:
de muziek ontwikkelt zich
tot een majestueus

Stück beginnt mit
einem eindrucksvollen
Paukensolo, bevor
Blechbläser und
Saxophon einsetzen. Der
rhythmische Puls bleibt
konstant unter einer
feurigen,
nachdrücklichen Musik.
Eine pentatonische
Melodie bildet sich nach
und nach heraus,
während die Musik an
Heftigkeit verliert und
sanfter wird. Die
anfänglichen Ostinati
im Schlagwerk kehren
zurück und so endet
der erste Satz des Werkes
in einer der Eröffnung
ähnlichen Stimmung.
Der zweite Satz ist
lieblich und melodiös.
Er beginnt mit einem
langen Abschnitt für
die Saxophone in Moll.
Dann erscheint das
gleiche Thema in Dur und
durchläuft eine
Entwicklung; die Musik
baut sich zu einem
majestätischen
orchestralen Forte auf,
das in seiner
Klangfülle an eine
Orgel erinnert. Dann
kehrt das Thema in seiner
ursprünglichen
Moll-Tonart und in
veränderter
Instrumentierung
zurück, um den Satz
ruhig und friedvoll in
einem e-Moll-Akkord enden
zu lassen.

I Shall
Love But Thee is an
occasional work in the
literal sense of the
word, since it was
originally written on the
occasion of the
composer’s
youngest son’s
wedding. The texts, by
William Shakespeare,
inspired Jan Van der

and appealing music,
largely in the style of
Henry Purcell (in the
first part) and Georg
Friedrich Handel (in the
second
part)—although no
literal quotations have
been used. The rather
rare combination of
soprano and fanfare band
makes this piece a unique
addition to the

van het woord een
gelegenheidswerk, want
het werd oorspronkelijk
geschreven naar
aanleiding van het
huwelijk van de jongste
zoon van de componist. De
teksten zijn van William
Shakespeare: Jan Van der
Roost werd erdoor ge

creëren van
indringende en
aansprekende muziek, die
in stilistisch opzicht
doet denken aan Henry
Purcell (in het eerste

er geen letterlijke

nspireerd tot het
creëren van
indringende en
aansprekende muziek, die
in stilistisch opzicht
doet denken aan Henry
Purcell (in het eerste
deel) en Georg Friedrich
Händel (in het tweede
deel), twee componisten
die op teksten van
Shakespeare hebben
gecomponeerd ook al zijn
er geen letterlijke
citaten gebruikt. De vrij
zeldzame combinatie van
sopraan en fanfare maakt
dit werk een unieke
aanwinst voor
hetrepertoire!
I Shall Love
But Thee ist ein
Gelegenheitswerk im
eigentlichen Sinn, denn
der Komponist hat es
ursprünglich aus
Anlass der Hochzeit
seines jüngsten Sohnes
geschrieben. Die Texte
stammen von William
Shakespeare und haben Jan
Van der Roost dazu
inspiriert, eine
tiefgründige und
ansprechende Musik im
Stil der großen
Meister zu komponieren.
Stilistisch erinnert sie
an Henry Purcell (im
ersten Teil) und an Georg
Friedrich Händel (im
zweiten Teil), auch wenn
keine literarischen
Zitate verwendet wurden.
Durch die eher seltene
Kombination von Sopran
und Blasorchester stellt
das Stück eine
einzigartige Bereicherung
für das Repertoire
dar!

Whereas ‘Auld
Lang Syne’ may be
considered the best-known
Scottish song ever, yet
at the same time it is an
obscure one, for there
are but few people who
know the complete text by
heart. After the
familiar ‘Should auld
acquaintance be forgot
.....‘ many people take
their refuge to lyrics
like ‘rum tee dum ta
dee ..... lah, lah, lah
........... for auld lang
syne’. Even in
Scotland only a handful
of persons know the
entire text and are able
to give a correct
rendering of it. The
current lyrics have been
attributed to the
Scottish poet Robert
Burns. Burns, however, he
did not write the whole
poem : after he had heard
an old man sing the
centuries-old
Scotchballad, he wrote it
down and added a number
of stanzas (1788).
Historical research
teaches us that the
ballad served many
purposes, both political
and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang
Syne’ is sung as a
Christmas Carol and it is
also sung on New Year’s
Eve at the turning of the
year. Apart from that,
though, the song is also
sung on many other
occasions sometimes with
different lyrics, which
usually have Love,
Friendship and/or Parting
as their themes, as these
go well with the
fascinating melody.
In this arrangement
a low-sounding solo
instrument is central.
The harmonization in the
accompaniment fits in
perfectly with the
sentiments this song will
evoke.
Should
auld acquaintance be
forgot And never
brought to mind?
Should auld acquintance
be forgot. And days
of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my
dear, For auld lang
syne, We’ll take a
cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Misschien wel het
meest bekende Schotse
lied, maar tegelijkertijd
ook het minst bekende, er
zijn er maar weinig
mensen die de tekst mee
kunnen zingen. Na het
bekende ‘Should auld
acquaintaintance be
forgot and .....‘
vervallenvelen in ‘rum
tee dum ta dee ..... lah,
lah, lah ........... for
auld lang syne’.
Zelfs in Schotland is
maar een enkeling in
staat de tekst correct
weer te geven. De
huidige versie wordt
toegeschreven aan de
Schotse dichterRobert
Burns. Burns heeft echter
niet de hele tekst
gemaakt. Toen hij de
eeuwen oude Schotse
ballade door een oude man
hoorde zingen, heeft hij
enkele verzen toegevoegd
(1788). Historisch
onderzoek leert dat de
ballade voorveel
doeleinden gebruikt werd,
voor politieke als ook
religieuze doelen.
Tegenwoordig wordt
‘Auld Lang Syne’
gebruikt als Christmas
Carol en wordt het
gezongen tijdens de
jaarwisseling op
oudejaarsavond.Het lied,
soms meteen andere tekst,
wordt echter op veel meer
plaatsen gebruikt.
Liefde, Vriendschap en
Afscheid zijn dan meestal
de sentimenten die
gecombineerd worden met
de meeslepende
melodie.
In dit
arrangement staat een
‘laag’

This is an

in 1794. Dafydd (David)
Owain was a famous Welsh
bard who lived on a farm

that on his deathbed he
called for his harp and

it be played at his

was later played at the

were later added by

overlevering vroeg hij op

funeral. Accordingly, it
was later played at the
parish church of
Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics
were later added by
Ceiriog Hughes, which
describe the melody's
inspiration. This version
for fanfare band retains
all the beauty and
simplicity of the
original.
Deze
oude melodie uit Wales
werd in 1794 voor het
eerst uitgegeven in
Relics of the Welsh
Bards. Dafydd (David)
Owain was een beroemde
bard uit Wales, hij
woonde op een boerderij
genaamd Gareg Wen (De
witte rots) te
Eifionyddin
Carnarnvonshire, in
Noord-Wales. Volgens de
overlevering vroeg hij op
zijn sterfbed om zijn
harp en componeerde hij
vervolgens deze prachtige
melodie, met het verzoek
om die te laten spelen op
zijn begrafenis.
Overeenkomstigzijn wens
werd de melodie gespeeld
in de dorpskerk van
Ynys-Cynhaiarn. De tekst
werd later toegevoegd
door Ceiriog Hughes en
beschrijft de
ontstaansgeschiedenis van
deze
muziek.
Dafydd
Owain war ein
berühmter walisischer
Barde, der auf einem
Bauernhof namens Gareg
Wen, was so viel wie
weißer Felsen
bedeutet, lebte; daher
der Name David vom
weißen Felsen“.
Es wird erzählt, dass
Dafydd auf seinem
Sterbebett nach seiner
Harfe verlangte und dort
diese Melodie
komponierte, mit der
Bitte, man möge sie zu
seiner Beerdigung
spielen. Die Schlichtheit
dieses bezaubernden Airs
eignet sich perfekt als
Zwischenspiel in Ihrem
Konzert.

narra che, prima di
morire,Dafydd Owain
chiese che gli venisse
portata la sua arpa.
Negli ultimi istanti
della sua vita avrebbe
composto questa deliziosa
melodia esigendo che
venisse eseguita al suo

da allora un classico
della musica tradizionale
gallese.

This
composition of Marc
Cunningham has four
parts, and takes place on
a sunny day in a
picturesque town.
1. Promenade Many
people walk through the
city. The band passes
through the streets.
People are strolling
along the avenues and
amorous couples are
sitting on a park
bench.
2. Lovey
Dovey One of these
couples is knee-deep in
love.
3. Crispy
and Creamy Here the
contrasts between a crisp
staccato section in
two-four time signature
and a smooth legato
section in three-four
time signature are
depicted. Is Crispy the
boy and Creamy the
girl?
4.
Farewell In the last
particle the couple says
goodbye. We still think
back tothe walk through
the city. It sounds a
little less happy now.
Not everyone is good at
saying goodbye, sometimes
a tear flows.
Deze compositie
van Mark Cunningham heeft
vier delen, en speelt
zich af op een zonnige
dag in een pittoresk
stadje.
1.
Promenade Veel mensen
maken een wandeling door
de stad. De fanfare trekt
door de straten. Mensen
lopente flaneren langs de
lanen en verliefde
stelletjes zitten op een
bankje in het
park.
2.
Lovey-dovey Eén van deze
stelletjes is tot over de
oren verliefd.
3.
Crispy and Creamy Hier
worden de
tegenstellingentussen een
knapperig staccato
gedeelte in 2/4 maatsoort
en een vloeiend legato
gedeelte in 3/4 maatsoort
uitgebeeld. Is Crispy de
jongen en Creamy het
meisje?
4.
Farewell In het laatste
deeltje nemen ze afscheid
van elkaar.We denken nog
even terug aan de
wandeling door de stad.
Het klinkt nu wel wat
minder vrolijk. Niet
iedereen is goed in
afscheid nemen, er vloeit
wel eens een
traantje.
