The French composer
Louis Bourgeois lived
from c.1510 to 1560.
Bourgeois was cantor in
Geneva and, commissioned
by John Calvin, he
composed melodies for
metrical (rhyming)
versions of the psalms.
After completing about a
hundred one-part psalms,
he made some four-part
arrangements, which were
denounced and even
resulted in his
imprisonment for a day.
Later, Bourgeois
published a number of
psalm collections, and
judging from his book Le
droict chemin de musique
he was also an excellent
educator. The melodies
Bourgeois composed, are
(contrary to Gregorian
chants) particularly
suitable for community
singing. This applies to
his hymn tune Saint
Michael, which is why
this melody hasbeen used
for various texts,
written for many
occasions. John Blanken
made this arrangement for
a wedding ceremony: an
occasion in which faith
and trust play a large -
if not the largest -
role. Hence the title
Hymn of Faith. The
arrangement contains four
verses of the hymn. After
a majestic opening the
hymn follows twice, the
second verse being
embellished in the tenor
register. After a short
interlude verse three
follows, played by a
quartet. The majestic
opening is then repeated
as a modulation into the
fourth verse, which
concludes the work in a
brilliant tutti.

Donne’s poem of

trigger various emotions,
ranging from

Jacob de Haan was
inspired by three
different works of art: a
poem (the aforementioned
poem by John Donne), a
painting by the Norwegian
painter Edvard Munch
(Jealousy in the Garden)
and an old French chanson
about jealousy (Je ne
l’ose dire) by the
sixteenth-century French
composer Pierre Certon.
The music refers

notes from the melody
that serve as the
starting point for new,
isolated themes and
sometimes through
quotations of the
original version.

impressive work was

Dutch-Friesian city of
Leeuwarden, which was
considered the
‘cultural
capital’ of
Europe, 2018; the
composer spent his
college years in this
city. This festive work
for bagpipes, drums and
fanfare band is based on
the melody of the anthem
of the province of
Friesland. Proud
was written for the music
event, Grutsk, which is
the Friesian word for
proud hence the title.
Various bands have
performed on five
different stages across
the town centre. The
finale was performed in a
concert held at
Wilhelminaplein
(Wilhelmina Square),
which opened with this
work. This world premiere
was conducted by the
composer himself. The
bagpipes areoptional, but
advisable. As a whole,
they give the composition
a very special sound.

indrukwekkende werk is

feestelijke werk voor

gebaseerd op de melodie
van het volkslied van de
provincie Friesland.
Proud werd

titel. Op vijf
verschillende podia in de

Deze wereldpremière
werd gedirigeerd door de

wenselijk. Ze geven de
gehele compositie een
bijzondere klankkleur.

This
impressive work was
composed for the
Dutch-Friesian city of
Leeuwarden, which was
considered the
‘cultural
capital’ of
Europe, 2018; the
composer spent his
college years in this
city. This festive work
for bagpipes, drums and
fanfare band is based on
the melody of the anthem
of the province of
Friesland. Proud
was written for the music
event, Grutsk, which is
the Friesian word for
proud hence the title.
Various bands have
performed on five
different stages across
the town centre. The
finale was performed in a
concert held at
Wilhelminaplein
(Wilhelmina Square),
which opened with this
work. This world premiere
was conducted by the
composer himself. The
bagpipes areoptional, but
advisable. As a whole,
they give the composition
a very special sound.
Dit
indrukwekkende werk is
gecomponeerd in het kader
van Leeuwarden als
Culturele Hoofdstad van
Europa in 2018. In deze
stad heeft de componist
ooit zijn studententijd
doorgebracht. Het
feestelijke werk voor
doedelzakken, drummers en
blaasorkesten is
gebaseerd op de melodie
van het volkslied van de
provincie Friesland.
Proud werd
geschreven voor het
muziekevenement Grutsk.
Dit is het Friese woord
voor trots vandaar de
titel. Op vijf
verschillende podia in de
binnenstad traden diverse
bands op. Afsluiting
vormde het concert op het
Wilhelminaplein, dat met
dit werk werd geopend.
Deze wereldpremière
werd gedirigeerd door de
componist zelf. De
doedelzakstemmen zijn
optioneel,maar wel
wenselijk. Ze geven de
gehele compositie een
bijzondere klankkleur.
Dieses
eindrucksvolle Werk wurde
für die
holländisch-friesische
Stadt Leeuwarden
geschrieben, die
Europäische
Kulturhauptstadt 2018
ist. In dieser Stadt
verbrachte der Komponist
seine Studienjahre. Sein
festliches Werk für
Dudelsack, Trommler und
Blasorchester basiert auf
der Hymne der Provinz
Friesland. Proud
wurde speziell für die
Veranstaltung
Grutsk“
geschrieben, was auf
Friesisch so viel
Stolz“ bedeutet und
somit den Titel des
Stückes erklärt.
Auf fünf verschiedenen
Bühnen im Stadtzentrum
führten es mehrere
Blasorchestern auf. Das
Finale bildete ein
Konzert auf dem
Wilhelmina-Platz, das mit
Proud eröffnet
wurde. Diese
Welturaufführung wurde
vomKomponisten selbst
dirigiert. Der Dudelsack
ist optional, jedoch
empfehlenswert, da er der
Komposition ihren ganz
besonderen Klang
verleiht.

Dreaming of
love. This is the theme
of the folksong on which
the composition was
based. Its characteristic
melody inspired Jacob de
Haan to this instrumental
romance with a
transparent structure
consisting of an
introduction, the
folk-melody, a
development of the theme,
the folk-melody
accompanied by ornamental
triplets followed by the
final bars.
Ein
romantisches Volkslied
inspirierte Jacob de Haan
dazu, German Love
Song zu komponieren,
eine instrumentale
Romanze in der typischen
ABA-Form. Die
charakteristische Melodie
des Volksliedes erklingt
in der Sopranstimme,
melodisch unterlegt von
dem Tenorregister. Teil B
entsteht aus diesem
melodischen Gegenstück
und er entwickelt sich
nach einer kurzen
Durchführung zu einem
fantastischen
Höhepunkt. Dann
erklingt zum letzten Mal
das Hauptthema in seiner
ganzen Pracht.
