One of the best
known nicknames for a
city that is perhaps New
York: The Big Apple.
Already in the thirties
of the last century, this
name is often used in New
York jazz scene. With The
Big Apple Manhattan was
intended. It was the
place to be. Around
1920 Harlem was the
center of a thriving
black culture. This
period is known as the
Harlem Renaissance. In
the famous Cotton Club
were many concerts of
greats like Duke
Ellington. Broadway
attracts millions of
tourists. Many of them
visit here one of the
many musicals sometimes
for years on the boards
are placed. Broadway
splashes sparkles and
swings. Peter Martin
shows usthree bites tests
of this imaginary apple.
Enjoy!
Eén
van de bekendste bijnamen
voor een stad is wellicht
die van New York: 'The
Big Apple'. Al in de
jaren dertig van de
vorige eeuw werd deze
naam vaak gebruikt in de
New Yorkse jazzscene. Met
'The Big Apple' werd
Manhattanbedoeld. Het was

Rond 1920 werd Harlem het
centrum van een bloeiende

periode staat bekend als
de 'Harlem Renaissance'.
In de beroemde Cotton

bezoeken hier één van
de vele musicals die soms
al jaren op de planken

The
idea behind this work was
to create an opening
piece, something to start
a concert in an unusual
way. The title is a
portmanteau word derived
from madrigal. The work
indeed begins in
Renaissance mood however
gradually tries to shake
of its modal start and,
by contrasting different
instrumental families,the
work changes into modern
clothes.Why not add a
little Renaissance
splendor to any concert
with this unique new
work?
Dem Titel
entsprechend, beginnt
dieses Eröffnungswerk
im Renaissance-Stil in
den Schlaginstrumenten
mit einer fanfareartigen
Figur in einer
Solotrompete. Dann
entwickelt sich die Musik
jedoch hin zu moderneren
Klängen. Dann wechselt
sich ein Legato mit dem
schnelleren
Madrigalrhythmus ab,
bevor das Stück noch
einmal die Richtung
ändert und in einer
schnellen Coda endet. Ein
ungewöhnlicher, viel
versprechender Auftakt
für Ihr Konzert!
Questo brano di
apertura è insolito e
originale. Il titolo è
un acronimo derivato dal
termine madrigale, una
forma musicale apparsa
nel XVI secolo.
Madrigalum apre al
suono delle percussioni,
in uno stile
rinascimentale. La tromba
espone un motivo di
fanfara ispirato da una
figura ritmica
caratteristica di
numerosi madrigali
dell’epoca. La
struttura abbandona
progressivamente la sua
forma modale per
sviluppare un dialogo
strumentale contrastante
e contrastato che d al
brano una forma più
moderna. Un passaggio
legato evidenzia gli
strumenti dalle sonorit
più calde e si alterna
con motivi ritmici del
madrigale, prima di
imporre un cambiamento
assoluto del carattere
cheaccompagna il brano ad
un finale eclatante.

De titel
Madrigalum is
afgeleid van de term
madrigaal - en dit
openingswerk begint
inderdaad in een
renaissancistische sfeer,
aanvankelijk met
slagwerk. Een
fanfareachtig motief,
ingezet door een
solotrompet, is gebaseerd
ophet ritmische motief
dat de aanvang van veel
zestiende-eeuwse
madrigalen kenmerkt (een
lange toon en twee korte
tonen). Maar het werk
schudt zijn modale start
van zich af: met
contrasten tussen
verschillende
instrumentgroepen
veranderthet van richting
en hult zich in een
modern jasje. Een legato
gedeelte vestigt de
aandacht op de zachter
klinkende instrumenten in
afwisseling met het
madrigaalritme - tot een
complete omschakeling
naar een sneller coda
leidt,waarmee het werk
besluit.

mannen, wier namen nauw
verbonden zijn met het
Friese dorp
Witmarsum. Het zijn
heel verschillende
figuren, hoewel er in hun
karakters ook
welovereenkomsten zijn.
Alle drie de heren hebben
zich tot op grote hoogte
ontwikkeld, zelfs
internationaal, en zijn
een symbool geworden voor
de door hen
verwezenlijkte hun
idealen.
1.
Gysbert Japicx, de
belangrijkste
Frieserenaissanceschrijve
r leefde van 1603 tot
1666. Geboortig van
Bolsward, werd hij
schoolmeester en
voorzanger in o.a.
Witmarsum. Zijn grote
betekenis is dat hij de
Friese taal, die rond
1580 als rechts- en
bestuurstaal had
afgedaan,weer een plaats
gaf tussen de Europese
cultuurtalen. De taal en
spelling van Gysbert
Japicx vormen de basis
voor de hedendaagse
Friese schrijftaal. In
1947 is door Gedeputeerde
Staten van Frysl n een
belangrijke
literatuurprijsnaar hem
genoemd. Het eerste
deel van de compositie is
gebaseerd op Japicx’s
gedicht “By ’t opgean
fan ‘e sinne”. De
bloemrijke beschrijving
van de natuur en het
opgaan van de zon worden
in een soort Pastorale
uitgebeeld.Door middel
van stijgende lijnen in
de melodie tegen een
horizontale achtergrond
wordt het opkomen van de
zon beschreven. In
het koper klinkt de
vreugde over alles wat de
zon teweegbrengt: Wolkom

2. Menno
Simons werd in Witmarsum

volgde een
priesteropleiding en werd
pastoor in zijn
geboortedorp. Het was de
woelige tijd van de
reformatie. Simons voelde
zich aangetrokken tot het
verboden geloof vande
dopers en stapte uit het
katholieke ambt.
Menno Simons publiceerde
vele geschriften, waarin
hij zijn visie op de
Christelijke leer
verkondigde. Zijn leer
