Jan de Haan
took as a starting point
for Music for a
Solemnity an old
custom from the Dutch
town of Hoogeveen, by
which the faithful are
called to church with
drums. It was also
inspired by the music of
John Williams. This
unusual combination has
resulted in a solemn work
in which old traditional
methods are united with
modern rhythms and
melodic lines.
Voor Music for
a Solemnity liet Jan
de Haan zich enerzijds
inspireren door de
eeuwenoude traditie in de
Drentse stad Hoogeveen om
met trommels tot de
kerkgang op te roepen en
anderzijds door de muziek
van de succesvolle
Amerikaansecomponist John
Williams. Deze bijzondere
combinatie resulteerde in
een feestelijk werk met
ritmische patronen en
melodische lijnen die
getuigen van respect voor
Williams’
oeuvre.

Five States
of Change was
commissioned by
Kunstfactor for the 4th
section of the Dutch
National Brass Band
Championships (NBK) 2011.
It is dedicated to Jappie
Dijkstra and the Music
Information Centre (MUI),
Arnhem, Holland, in
acknowledgement of their
outstanding work in
developing band
repertoire.The composer
writes: The idea for the
piece came when I was
reading an article about
a branch of Chinese
philosophy which is
abbreviated as Wu
Xing*, which has no
exact translation but can
mean, for example,
five elements, five
phases or five
states of change. It
is central to all
elements of Chinese
thought, including
science, philosophy,
medicine andastrology,
and in simple terms tries
to create various cyclic
relationships between
five elements in all
walks of life.An example
is: Earth - Metal - Water
- Wood - Fire - (Earth)
etc. where (in one cycle)
earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of
emotions:- Meditation -
Sorrow - Fear - Anger -
Joy - (Meditation) etc.
and thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So Five States
of Change has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the
previous one, with the
opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.

well-known style of
popular music. The name
does not come out of thin
air. After all, the term
‘blues’
refers to a state of

originate in the
melancholic music that
the slaves in the

‘blue notes’
(the flattened 3rd and

which give this exciting

Musica
Helvetica takes the
form of a three-part
concert work. The first
part, Musica
Prima, has a jazz
flavour and is a brisk
virtuoso opening. The
following section,
Musica Sacra, has
a contrasting and
beautiful main
themcontaining
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation. The
final part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the amazing variety of
scenery in
Switzerland.
In

Naast een hymne en een
solowerk dienen alle
orkesten een verplicht
werk uit te voeren. Voor
het concours van 2012
werd eenopdracht
verstrekt aan Jan de
Haan. De compositie kreeg
Musica Helvetica
als titel mee. Het gaat
om een driedelig
concertwerk waarvan de
laatste twee delen
onafgebroken in elkaar
overgaan. Het eerste
deel, Musica
Prima,is een virtuoze
en flitsende opening met
hier en daar jazzy
invloeden. In contrast
daarmee staat het
expressieve volgende
deel, Musica
Sacra, waarin het
gedragen hoofdthema
prachtig wordt uitgewerkt
- de instrumentatieis
hier buitengewoon
kleurrijk. Het
afsluitende deel,
Musica Alpina, is
ge nspireerd op het
afwisselende landschap
van Zwitserland. Het is
grillig van structuur en
vormt een waardige
afsluiting van dit fraaie
drieluik.

Paul Dukas
(1865-1935) was a
composer who had little
self-confidence and was
very self-critical. As a
result of this he
destroyed the manuscripts
of all but seven large
and five small works.
Luckily kept what is now
his best know
composition, the
symphonic scherzo
L’apprenti sorcier
(The Sorcerer’s
Apprentice). He also came
very close to destroying
the manuscript of his
ballet music La Peri (The
Fairy). This was however
rescued by his friends.
Thus we can still enjoy
this magnificent fanfare
which was originally used
as an opener for the
ballet. This magnificent
transcription for fanfare
band will make a great
opening item for any
concert.

Jacob de Haan
was commissioned to
compose this concert
piece by the St. Peters
Wind Symphony from
Brisbane, Australia. Ross
Roy is the monumental
late 19th century villa
where St. Peters Lutheran
College was founded in
1945. The villa has
always remained the
school symbol. In this
composition, Jacob de
Haan sees the Ross Roy as
a metaphor for the years
spent at school (a
monument in time), where
one's personality is
formed. So, the opening
theme the artist calls
the Ross Roy theme
initially has monumental
characteristics.The
rhythmic motion, which
strides along in the
lower register and
percussion at the
beginning of the next
section is typical of
Tempo di Marcia.
Thismovement, accompanied
by repetitions of sound,
is a metaphor for the
structure and discipline
in school. This is the
introduction to a march
theme, symbolic of
passing through the
classes up to the final
examinations.Then, the
Ross Roy theme is dealt
with again, now in a
playful, humorous
variation. As if the
composer is saying there
should also be time for a
smile in school. The same
theme can be heard in
major key and a slower
tempo in the following
section, expressing pride
and self-confidence. This
is also the introduction
to the expressive middle
section that represents
love, friendship and
understanding.We then
return to the march theme
in a slightly altered
construction. The
oriental sounds,
constituting the
modulation to the final
theme, are symbols of the
diversity of cultures in
the school. The
characteristic final
theme first sounds
solemn, but turns into a
festive apotheosis. It is
no coincidence that the
final cadence is
reminiscent of the close
to a traditional
overture, for the school
years can be considered
the overture to the rest
of one's life. The
premiere of Ross Roy was
conducted by Jacob de
Haan in Brisbane, on
August 22, 1997.
