Franz Lehár
was born in Komárom,
Hungary on 30th April
1870. From the age of
fifteen he received
composition and violin
lessons at the Prague
conservatory from Anton n

composed The Merry Widow

worldwide success. The
libretto of this operetta

The Vilja-Lied is one of
these arias. In this

Avalon is a
one-part composition. The
surprising opening
measures describe the
sudden entrance into
another world. After
these initial measures,
we hear a choral-like
melody, which is repeated
three times in different
instrumentations with
increasing intensity.
This represents the
procession of the ghosts
dwelling in the
underworld of Avalon,
headed by the mighty
magician Merlin.The
exalted sound is then
suddenly interrupted by a
fast movement, in which
ostinato figures
alternate with bi-tonal
motives. This represents
the attempt of some evil
characters to invade
Avalon. Mordred is the
leader of this horde and
together they disturb the
peace and quiet in the
otherwisecalm Avalon. The
flourish of trumpets
heralds the entrance of
the Knights of the Round
Table who drive away the
intruders and return to
their castle, Tintagel,
in a triumphal
procession. Upon their
return, the next problem
presents itself. An
inexplicable disease
plagues the resting
ghosts.The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
are convened to find out
the cause of this
problem. Musically this
can be heard in the
repetition of the initial
themes. The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
determine that the
presence of mortals is
the reason that the
resting ghosts are
suffering. There is
simply no room for mortal
souls in Avalon. After a
powerful statement by
King Arthur, we hear a
glissando referring to
the very first measures,
and… we are back in
the normal world. The
journey through the
underworld has come to an
end and a dream is over.

themselves De Geuzen. Jan
de Haan incorporates
Psalm 43, sung by a group
of condemned prisoners
shortly before their
execution in 1943, into
Geuzen Medal Fanfare,
composed for the 25th
bestowal of this special
award.
Ieder jaar
weer wordt ze weer
uitgereikt: de
Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan
een persoon of
organisatie die zich op
bijzondere wijze inzet
voor de democratie en
tegen dictatuur, racisme
en discriminatie. In de
zestiende eeuw streden
deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse
bezetting. In de Tweede
Wereldoorlog was er
eveneens een verzetsgroep
die zich zo noemde. Een
deel van hen werd in 1943
veroordeeld tot de
doodstraf. Vlak voor de
voltrekking van het
vonnis zetten zij psalm43
in. Precies deze psalm
verwerkte Jan de Haan in
zijn openingswerk Geuzen
Medal Fanfare. Hij
schreef het ter
gelegenheid van de
vijfentwintigste
uitreiking.

The popular
Swedish children's series
Pippi LÃ¥ngstrump
(Pippi Longstocking) is
about an exceedingly
strong and strong-willed
little girl with red
braids - who is the
brainchild of Astrid
Lindgren. This series has
been broadcasted in many
countries. I arranged its
cheerful theme tune in
samba style. Even with
the new rhythm, the
original song is still
very recognizable. In the
exuberant samba style,
the percussion plays an
important role. Within
the LÃ¥ngstrump Samba,
this is especially clear
in the ad libitum
percussion solo halfway
through the arrangement.
The solo can go on as
long as desired, and
offers plenty of freedom
because of the free
choice of the instruments
used.
Pippi
Langstrumpf, das ebenso
starke wie eigenwillige
Mädchen mit den roten
Zöpfen, hat in
Büchern, Filmen und
Fernsehserien die Herzen
der Kinder und jung
Gebliebenen auf der
ganzen Welt erobert.
Untrennbar mit der
Fernsehserie verknüpft
ist die fröhliche
Titelmelodie, die von
John Blanken in ein
temperamentvolles
Samba-Gewand gesteckt
wurde. Auch in diesem
neuen Rhythmus ist das
Originallied noch klar zu
erkennen. Das Schlagzeug
spielt eine wichtige
Rolle, ganz besonders im
ad libitum spielbaren
Schlagzeugsolo, dessen
Dauer und
Instrumentenwahl frei
wählbar sind.
Ausgelassen und
temperamentvoll!

Das
Adagio, so wie es
heute weithin bekannt
ist, hat eine
interessante Geschichte:
Es wurde erst im 20.
Jahrhundert von einem
Musikwissenschaftler aus
einem Manuskript
Albinonis, welches
lediglich Teile einer
Melodie enthielt,
rekonstruiert. Dennoch
ist es gerade das Adagio,
das Albinoni in der
heutigen Musikwelt
berühmt gemacht hat
und dessen Wirkung sich
auch in diesem
gefühlvollen
Arrangement von Jacob de
Haan niemand entziehen
kann.

The title
Ex Tribus Fontis
(Latin for ‘from
three sources’)
refers to the three
sources of inspiration
that were used for this
composition. The legend
of Saint Donatus, patron
saint of the
commissioning band
describes how he and his
soldiers prayed to God
during a losing battle,
the result of which being
a thunderstorm which
annihilated the Teutonic
opponents. This three
movement piece is
extremely impressive and
very much suitable for
both concerts and
contests.
De titel
Ex Tribus Fontis
(Latijn voor ‘uit
drie bronnen’)
verwijst naar de drie
inspiratiebronnen die aan
deze compositie ten
grondslag liggen. Ten
eerste beschrijft de
legende van Sint-Donatus,
patroonheilige van het
opdrachtgevende orkest,
hoe hij en zijn soldaten
tijdens een uitzichtloze
omsingeling baden tot
God, waarna er een onweer
losbrak dat de Germaanse
tegenstander met
blikseminslagen versloeg.
Het tweede thema is
gebaseerd op de drie
noten van de website van
het orkest:
www.fasido.be. Tot slot
is er het
Sint-Donatuskoraal, dat
in deel drie volledig tot
uiting komt, waar het
feestelijk omspeeld
weerklinkt in een groots
tutti en uitmondt in een
spetterend
slot.
Der Titel
Ex Tribus Fontis
(lateinisch für aus

verweist auf die drei
Inspirationsquellen, die
für diese Komposition
verwendet wurden. Die
Legende vom Heiligen
Donatus, dem Schutzpatron
des Auftrag gebenden
Orchesters, beschreibt,
wie seine Soldaten und er
während eines
verlorenen Kampfes zu
Gott beteten. Das
Ergebnis war ein
Gewitter, welches die
germanischen Gegner
vernichtete. Dieses
dreisätzige Stück
ist äußerst
beeindruckend und eignet
sich bestens sowohl
für Konzerte als auch
für
Wettbewerbe.
