In preparation for Carol Wincenc's landmark Naumburg Award Recital at New York's Lincoln Center, she asked composer Daniel Paget to create a work drawn from the world of wonderful Romanian folk music for nai, or panpipes. The result was Romania!, Fantasy for Flute and Piano, a duet suggestive of both the nai and the cimbalom (hammered dulcimer). The work is a brilliant tip-of-the-hat to Wincenc's Austro-Hungarian heritage and her inner tzigane-style temperament. Great care has been taken to select dynamics and articulations that allow the phrases to make the best use of the flute's capabilities, given the rich harmonic language typical of this part of the world. Filled withmeltingly beautiful lyricism and dazzling technical gestures, this new edition is bound to bring years of enjoyment to all those who have it. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. The Romance for a melodic instrument and Piano was a very popular genre in French salon music of the nineteenth century. Saint-Saëns also wrote several such pieces for Violin, Cello, and Horn. His only Romance for Flute was composed in 1871, shortly after the Société nationale de musique had been founded. It was premiered in this new forum for Piano music and chamber works a year later, too. In spite of its brevity, the piece contains numerous harmonic and melodic refinements, which rapidly made it popular among flautists – both in the original setting with Piano accompaniment as well as in the later orchestral version. Par WIDOR CHARLES-MARIE. The Suite Florentine for violin and piano written by Charles-Marie Widor in 1919, is an arrangement of the Suite for Violin and Piano, op. 76 (1903), itself a collection of stage music from La Sulamite (1903). It was first performed at the Élysée Palace on 20 February 1919 for Queen Hélène of Italy. Widor played the piano on that occasion and dedicated the work to the Queen.
Like many of Widor's later works, it has no opus number. The suite highlights Widor's great talent for adopting the harmonic languages of various stylistic periods and his harmony is very eclectic. Par BARTOK BELA. For many countries, folk dances are important cultural treasures. While a first glance at these compositions shows their clear and simple structure with a distinct musical message, a closer look reveals rhythmic curiosities, interesting harmonic shifts, and a diverse expressive range. These characteristics must have enthralled Bartók, as he undertook several research trips to collect original folk tunes. Doing so, he experienced a wealth of culture, as well as a great diversity of people and nature, which he documented musically without altering the charm and authenticity of each encounter.
Following a number of arrangements of the pieces (originally composed for piano), the Romanian Folk Dances are now available for Flute and Piano. Gergely Ittzé has captured the spirit of the Hungarian composer perfectly with his arrangements, combining an authentic treatment of the classical original with a sprinkle of contemporary elements. The resulting sound effects are a wonderful match for the old Rumanian peasant style of music.
