Being
interested in certain
aspects of popular music,
I became aware of several
similarities between
popular Neapolitan
melodies and the
Argentinean tango.
Napolitango is
based on an imaginary
journey to Naples and
Buenos Aires. In
retaining certain
characteristics of the
original music,
Napolitango
embodies an inspiration
and an almost
theatrically passionate
character which is common
to these two
genres. The piece has

Composed in
memory of his brother,
Gary Schocker’s
SONATA NO. 9 for Flute

yet tender work. The four
movements are marked
Affettuoso, Arioso,
Marziale, and Ondeggiando
– the Italian
tempo markings perhaps
indicating a certain
degree of formal
tradition at the
foundation of the
sonata.

Gary
Schocker’s THREE
DANCES FOR TWO FLUTES has
long been a staple of the
flute repertoire –
in its original voicing
with piano, as well as in
transcriptions with
string orchestra or band
accompaniment, for alto
saxophone duo with piano,
and even in the
composer’s flute
quartet version of the
famous Coffee Nerves
movement. Schocker has
arranged THREE DANCES for
one solo flute with
piano, incorporating all
of the original
work’s
counterpoint, beauty, and
spice, into this
practical and concise
instrumentation.

Inspired by
one of the flute
repertoire’s
loveliest melodies,
SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is
a gently adapted
“jazz-flavoredâ€
setting of the slow
movement from
Bach’s Sonata in
Eb Major. Solo parts are
provided both for C Flute
and for Alto Flute. With
a fairly close rendering
of the authentic flute
line and more
contemporary chords in
the piano part, SICILIANO
(REIMAGINED) is an
inviting way to play
music with a modernized
jazz sound, while reading
traditional classical
notation. Inspired by
one of the flute
repertoire’s
loveliest melodies,
Siciliano (Reimagined)
never strays far from the
source, except for its
reharmonization.
Occasional jazz-infused
touches give the melody a
fresh perspective,
without diluting its
purity. I am always moved
by how beautifully the
music of the 18th century
and contemporary music
coexist.Performers may
play this arrangement in
the Baroque style.

Qvanz The high degree
which the art of flute
playing had reached at
that time is very clearly
displayed in this set of
variations, a form
unusual in Quantz's
output. For this reason,
this work is very
suitable as a study as

The realization of the
figured bass and the
indications of phrasing
merely represent one of
many possibilities, and
are only intended as
suggestions. The source
is in places full of
errors, and these have
been tacitly corrected.

The
flute concerto 'Dances
with the Winds' was
composed in 1974 for the
Swedish flautist Gunilla
von Bohr, a specialist in
all members of the flute
family. The ordinary
flute thus alternates
with a bass flute at the
beginning and end of the
four-movement concerto,
the second movement is
assigned to the shrill
piccolo and the third to
the sensuous alto flute.
The last movement is a
summary of all the
musical events in the
concerto. At the end the
bass flute soars to the
top of its register, the
note D acting as the
pivot to many of the
symmetries in the work,
against a resigned B flat
minor chord on the
orchestra. (Einojuhani
