“Char
les-Marie Widor
(1844-1937) was a great
organist who did not only
focus on Organ
composition. From
orchestra pieces to
chamber music, he wrote
various different
compositions, including
Suite for Flute and
Piano, Op. 34 which was
composed for Paul
Taffanel. This suite, a
subtle mix of Romanticism
and Classicism,
particularly stands out
for its nuances and is
composed of four
movements: - Moderato -
Scherzo - Romance - Final

SONATA
CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on
themes from
Puccini’s Madama
Butterfly)In the spirit
of the great 19th-century
opera fantasies for
woodwinds, Michael
Webster has created a
concert trio on the many
great arias from
Puccini's Madama
Butterfly. However, as
its name implies, Sonata
Cho-Cho-San is not the
typical virtuosic
operatic potpourri.
Rather, it follows the
plot, resembling a sonata
mirroring Puccini's use
of recurring and
developing themes.
Webster makes the most of
the winds as versatile
performers - equally
suited to deliver
Puccini's beautiful vocal
writing, and to ornament
and embroider the
poignant themes in
symphonic style. For
advanced
performers.______________

Known
internationally for
superior flute editions,
Robert Stallman continues
his considerable
expansion of the flute
repertoire with
re-creations, or
“new†works
for flute by Bach,
Mozart, Schubert,
Beethoven, Chopin,
Dvořák, and other
great composers.Conceived
originally as a work for
solo piano, this
arrangement of
Dvořák’s
Suite in A Major for
flute and piano is based
on both the piano and
orchestra versions. It is
one in a series of
Stallman’s
“new†works
for flute. Dvořák
composed the Suite in A
Major in 1894, inspired
by his happy and fruitful
stay in the “New
World†—a
period that produced some
of his greatest works,
full of thematic
freshness, raw energy and
folk influences, both
American and Old World
Czech. The “New
World†Symphony,
Cello Concerto,
“Americanâ€
Quartet, String Quintet
in E≤ Major, the
Violin Sonatina and this
A Major Suite are all cut
from the same musical
cloth—textured
with his personal
impressions of the Wild
West’s fascinating
Indian and Afro-American
music, its God-fearing
and friendly people, its
vast open spaces and its
awe-inspiring natural
beauty. PrefaceConceiv
ed originally as a work
for solo piano, the Suite
in A Major was composed
by Dvořák in 1894,
during his famous
two-year visit to the
United States. He wrote
the work in a mere ten
days, and a year later
made a full orchestration
of it. The Suite was
first performed in this
second version in 1910 in
Prague at the Rudolfinum.
Dvořák, who died
in 1904, never had a
chance to hear a
performance of this
stirring orchestral
realization.The Suite was
inspired by the
composer’s happy
and fruitful stay in the
“New Worldâ€,
especially by his
unforgettable summers
spent in the quiet
Czech-American village of
Spillville, Iowa—a
period that produced some
of his greatest works,
full of thematic
freshness, raw energy and
folk influences, both
American and Old World
Czech. The “New
World†Symphony,
Cello Concerto,
“Americanâ€
Quartet, String Quintet
in Eb Major, the Violin
Sonatina and this A Major
Suite are all cut from
the same musical
cloth—textured
with his personal
impressions of the Wild
West’s fascinating
Indian and Afro-American
music, its God-fearing
and friendly people, its
vast open spaces and its
awe-inspiring natural
beauty.Several of the
Suite’s affecting
melodies find echoes in
these other, better known
compositions of this
American period. Wistful
themes abound in all five
movements, reflecting
Dvořák’s
transformative American
experience as it found
resonance in his own
emotions. Contrasting
with deeply felt,
contemplative passages
are
Dvořák’s
joyous and tempestuous
expressions, which open
the second, third and
final movements.This
arrangement for flute and
piano is based on both
the piano and orchestra
versions. It is one in a
series of my
“new†works
for flute by some of our
greatest composers and I
am delighted to add it to
the collection. I predict
that the A Major Suite
will become a popular
addition to our Romantic
recital repertoire, much
like the Dvořák
Sonatina.—Robert
StallmanMarblehead,
Mass.June 1, 2018.

A
beautiful cantabile song
without words, A SONG
FROM THE HEART has all of
Ewazen’sexpressive
elegance, yet is
performable by
student-level players as
well as on formal
recitals.Originally
composed for Trumpet and
Piano, Ewazen created the
flute transcription for
CindyAnne Broz as the
title track for her
Albany CD including three
Ewazen works. A SONG
FROM THE HEART was
originally composed for
Trumpet andPiano and is
dedicated to Dennis Caron
on the occasion of his
retirement. It
wascommissioned by his
wife, Marsha Caron, and
was premiered at
Dennis’s
retirementparty by our
mutual friend Charles
Schlueter, long-time
principal trumpet of
theBoston Symphony. A
SONG FROM THE HEART is
filled with lyricism and
richharmonies, as the
trumpet line sings and
soars over a rich
accompaniment.The flute
version of this work was
written for my dear
friend Cindy Anne Broz,
for herAlbany CD
including first
recordings of 3 of my
flute pieces. Cindy was
wonderfulin helping me
with my flute
arrangement, as I heard
her lovely, bright high
register– hence my
putting some key passages
of the piece up an
octave, shaping the
phrasestructures to
flatter the lyrical flute
sonorities.

Nico
Samitz has been composing
for chamber ensembles
since his school days.
For over ten years he has
been writing works in a
wide variety of genres
for the “BlechReiz
BrassQuintettâ€
ensemble, in which he
himself plays trumpet and
piano. His field of
expertise ranges from
classical pieces to jazz
and meditative
music—and even to
pop-oriented
compositions. While
honing his skills in
ear-training and
composition at the
Mozarteum, Salzburg, Nico
became acquainted with a
wide repertoire of works
as a trumpet player with
the Munich Symphony
Orchestra, The Munich
Philharmonic Orchestra,
and the Bavarian State
Opera, all of which have
influenced his writing
style. The driving force
behind his creative work
is a winning combination
of passion, the fun of
music-making and a desire
to express, through the
medium of music, feelings
that are difficult to put
into words. Like many of
his works, Nico
composedThe Joy of
Freedom for the
“BlechReiz
BrassQuintetâ€. The
catchy tune is reworked
in a variety of styles
throughout the entire
work, giving it the
quality of a true
'earworm'.
