guitar works by Fernando
Sor. Some titles in this
edition may be new to
some readers, eg the
contents of volume 10.
This new edition is the
biggest new publishing
undertaking for the music
of Sor since the
1970s.Our editor Erik
Stenstadvold is a noted
expert on 19th century
guitar music and
publishes regularly in
leading professional
journals such as
‘Soundboard’ and
‘Early Music’. His
life-long preoccupation
with Sor and his music,
both as a performer and
researcher, has resulted
in an unsurpassed edition
in terms of scholarly
accuracy and practical
usefulness.All relevant
early sources have been
consulted, often several
different printed
editions and manuscripts
of a particular work. In
each case the most
dependable source has
been chosen as copy text,
on the basis of
historical evidence and
textual
reliability.Variances and
errors in the original
scores are corrected and
discussed in the
comprehensive critical
commentaries. All volumes
contain detailed
introductory notes that
place the individual
works in their historical
context and discuss
particular notation
problems. Suggestions for
the interpretation of
ornaments are also
provided. In Volume 1 and
2 (Studies), Sor’s
likely purpose of each
individual study is
discussed in relation to
the technique and
fingering principles he
describes in his 1830
Méthode.The music scores
are produced at
‘concert size’ with
clear and accurate music
engraving and
high-quality German
printing. Original
fingering is retained,
but in order to make the
music more accessible to
players in general,
editorial fingering has
been judiciously added in
works with little or no
indications in the
original editions. Added
fingerings are easily
distinguishable from the
original ones by their
different typefaces.

'Per Piero'
and 'Per Maurizio' are
among the most recent
pieces written for solo
guitar by Gilberto
Cappelli. The first
piece, written in 2006,
represents a surprise
present for my fiftieth
birthday: it was written
after a request of a
pupil of mine, Alessandra
Lucchi, who performed it
as a premiere during my
birthday party. The
second piece (2009)
expresses the
composer’s
participation for the
pain caused by the sudden
death of Maurizio
Biasini, scientist and
guitarist who completed
his musical studies at
Cesena Conservatory where
Gilberto Cappelli was in
the Board of Examiners.
The piece was premiered
at a concert in memory of
Maurizio held in the
Bonci Theatre in
Cesena. The use of a
particular tremolo effect
is a typical
characteristic of all the
guitar works of this
composer; a tremolo which
is very different from
the traditional one. The
performer is asked to
produce – as much
as possible – a
long and continuous
sound, as if it were a
voice or the long sound
of string or wind
instruments. The tremolo
will have to be very
dense and homogeneous. In
the case of a tremolo on
two or three strings it
is necessary to start
playing two or three
sounds simultaneously
only once and then
continuing alternating
them – but always
tending to achieve a
homogeneity of sound.

The
compositions by the
greatest Brazilian tango
composer and pianist
Ernesto Julio de Nazareth
(1863 -1934) are strongly
influenced by Brazilian
folk music. He preferred
light entertainment, and
his dance music has
remained extremely
popular in his home
country until today.
Heitor Villa-Lobos called
him 'the true embodiment
of the Brazilian soul'.
Nazareth composed
primarily choros music
which is very common in
Brazil, but it was his 25
tangos (25 Tangos
Brasileiros for piano,
Schott ED 7561) that made
him famous.The melancholy
waltz Confidencias in A
minor (already published
for piano in Valsas
brasileiros, Schott ED
20304) bridges the gap
between Latin American
folkore and Romantic
elements, as can be found
in the waltzes by Chopin.
The work's specific
expressive chromaticism
in melody and harmony
stands out particularly
in the arrangement for
chamber music
ensemble.
