Par OHANA MAURICE. Esquisse de l'histoire d'une esquisse Estelas (Stèles) a été créée le 16 mars 1977 à New-York par Abel Carlevaro qui l'a jouée par la suite en France et en Colombie. Mais d'où vient cette œuvre inconnue, une des rares pièces que Maurice Ohana ait composées pour la guitare à six cordes ? Pour connaître la genèse de cette pièce il faut remonter jusqu'en 1948, année de la rencontre et début de l'amitié entre Ohana et Carlevaro. À l'époque, Ohana jette à l'intention d'Abel Carlevaro l'ébauche d'un concerto pour guitare qui deviendra en 1957 les Trois Graphiques pour guitare et orchestre. Entre-temps Carlevaro est reparti dès 1951 en Uruguay et il faudra attendre 1974 pour que les deux amis se rencontrent de nouveau à Paris. Ces retrouvailles sont à l'origine des« Estelas », puisqu'à l'issue d'une soirée qui les réunit, le compositeur à son piano et le guitariste à son instrument, ce dernier repartit au petit matin avec pour mission de « mettre au propre » les notes de son ami Ohana. Ce qu'il fit avant d'en assurer la création, de l'inscrire à son répertoire, et d'écrire à Ohana que l'œuvre rencontrait beaucoup de succès. S'ensuivit une correspondance entre les deux amis, au cours de laquelle Ohana paraît avoir eu du mal à récupérer la partition et ce n'est qu'en 1980 que Carlevaro, de passage à Paris, put la lui remettre. Entre-temps Maurice Ohana avait décidé de ne plus écrire que pour la guitare à 10 cordes et il réutilisa une partie du matériau des « Estelas » pour composer une pièce beaucoup plus développée : le « Cadran lunaire », qui vit le jour en 1981. Si cette esquisse a été quelque peu « oubliée » par Ohana, on y reconnaît sans difficulté sa « patte », et on découvrira avec émotion ces sept miniatures où se manifeste l'immense talent avec lequel le compositeur aura fait de la guitare une fidèle confidente tout au long de sa vie.
