Les Roms sont appelés en français Gitans, Tziganes ou Tsiganes, Manouches, Romanichels, Bohémiens, Sinti, ou Gens du voyage. Les Tziganes sont les Roms qui vivent en Europe de l'est. Les Manouches résident soit en Alsace, soit sur les bords de la Loire, ainsi qu'en Belgique, en Hollande et en Allemagne. Les Gitans (appelés aussi Calés) vivent pour la plupart dans la péninsule ibérique, l'Afrique du nord et le sud de la France. On retrouve dans les traditions qu'englobe le terme de musique tzigane presque toujours les mêmes instruments comme le violon, l'accordéon, la guitare, la contrebasse ou le cymbalum. Cette tradition des instruments à cordes doit être mise en relation avec la tradition musicale indo-européenne en général.
