It is
difficult to determine
exactly how many oboe
concertos Antonio Vivaldi
wrote. Although the
present Concerto in F
major was earlier seen as
a secure work by Vivaldi
(therefore it has the old
RV-number 458), Vivaldi's
authorship got even more
disputable (in contrast
to the C major Concerto
RV 446 MR 2294). The
doubts cannot even be
dispelled by the
existence of two sources
from a large collection
in Lund, Sweden. The
Adagio central movement
deserves our particular
attention, as it was
transmitted in different
versions in the two
sources. In this first
edition for oboe and
piano, the non-ornamented
version is given first
and followed by the
version supplied by
editor Sandro Caldini
with ornaments typical of
Vivaldi's time, which
make this version of the
Adagio particularly
interesting for
performers.

An Evening in
the Village was composed
in 1908 as no. 5 of the
Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It
has become one of
Bartók's favorite
works, which the composer
himself was fond of
playing at recitals. As
he explained in an
American interview, it
was ''an original
composition that is ...
with themes of my own
invention but ... the
themes are in the style
of the
Hungarian-Transylvanian
folk tunes. There are two
themes. The first one is
a parlando-rubato-rhythm
and the second one is
more in a dance-like
rhythm. The second one is
more or less the
imitation of a peasant
flute playing.''
Bartók also
orchestrated the piece in
1931 as no. 1 of
Hungarian Sketches. In
2015 we are launching
aseries entitled
Bartók Transcriptions
for Music Students to
mark the 70th anniversary
of the composer s death.
This involves reissuing
our tried publications,
and publishing some
further, new
transcriptions that
fulfill in every respect
the strict aesthetic
demands of the earlier
ones. We trust these
publications will allow
us to introduce still
more music students to
the realm of one of the
great geniuses of
20th-century music.

This title
is taken from Dvorak.
However. The models from
which the songs are
derived are clearly
identifiable, as are the
composers from whose
language they have been
derived. The piece
appears to be in one
movement though it is in
fact two with a coda. The
first is French in style,
a sort of Waltz. It is
quick and harks upon the
likes of Francaix and
where its idiom becomes
more advanced, Messaien.
The other is Germanic, a
slow movement with echoes
of German expressionism -
perhaps Richard Strauss,
perhaps Mahler. The two
movements are partly
complete; the cod
reconciles their
differences and completes
them. I see the piece as
my own version of En
blanc et noir.
