Composed
during the summer and
fall of 1974, Barnes'
FIRST SYMPHONY, Op. 35
was his master's thesis
at The University of
Kansas. It was premiered
in the spring semester of
1976 by their Symphonic
Band, Robert E. Foster
conducting. The following
year, the symphony was
awarded the American
Bandmasters Ostwald
Composition prize, which
led to a second
performance (of only the
first two movements) by
the Northwestern Wind
Ensemble at the American
Bandmasters convention
with Col. Jack Cline (U.S
Marine Band) conducting.
Following this
performance, Barnes
submitted the work to
several publishers, all
of which declined on the
basis it was too long and
difficult to be
marketable. For this
reason, Barnes set the
work aside and there it
remained until 2022, when
an offer came from the
Osaka Shion Wind
Orchestra to record all
nine of
Barnes'symphonies to
help celebrate their
100th anniversary. Barnes
seized the opportunity,
engraving all four
movements, with revisions
and corrections, an
effort that took seven
days a week for two
months to complete. As a
result, after almost
fifty years, all nine of
the Barnes symphonies are
finally available for
performance.

Franz
Schubert wrote the two
movements of the
Unfinished Symphony in
October 1822. The torso
has since been posing
riddles to posterity,
which first learned of
the existence of this
masterpiece in 1865
through the simultaneous
first edition and
world-premiere
performance. There seems
to have been no external
reason for its creation.
Did Schubert really
consider the piece only
as an experiment that did
not warrant any
continuation? It should
be noted, however, that
Schubert sketched the
Scherzo up to the
beginning of the Trio,
and even fully
orchestrated nine
measures of this
movement.

Written in
2010 for the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic,
Wigglesworth's
nine-minute work explores
the idea of perpetuum
mobile (continuous
movement) in seven
connected, miniature
inventions. A regular
pulse forms the work's
core, with elaborations
of the central musical
idea shifting constantly
around it in jagged
rhythms and sumptuous
orchestration. The
composer writes, The
seven sections can very
briefly be described
thus: 1) an active,
miniature 'theme and
variations'; 2) the
juxtaposition of various
fragmentary two-part
inventions; 3) a tremolo
string ostinato with
woodwind interjections,
building towards the
first climax; 4) an
ostinato passing between
horns and muted trumpets
together with a dialogue
for high woodwind and low
strings; 5) a very slow
canon for string
harmonics and pizzicato
double basses; 6) a fast,
one-part invention
beginning with solo
piccolo, and gradually
leading to the second
climax; 7) chorale.This
is a lively orchestral
miniature which gives the
impression of a
kaleidoscope, with short
musical ideas cutting
across each other in
quick succession.
