A
visit to the opera
whetted the composers
creative appetite to
explore the
fairy-tale-like theme of
Knight Raimunds love for
the beautiful mermaid
Melusine, which provided
the basis for
Mendelssohns fourth
concert overture. As
usual, Mendelssohn worked
out the composition in
his mind before
committing it to paper, a
task he most likely began
towards the end of March
1833. The works premiere
performance took place in
London on 7 April 1834;
the revised version was
given its first account
in Leipzig on 23 November
1835. Its ranking as No.
4 of the concert
overtures was assigned
around 1857 in a
posthumous edition.(Ralf
Wehner in the Study
Edition of the
Mendelssohn Work
Catalogue).

maintains the charm of
the original Hans

Alla Pavlova's Thumbelina
is a considerable
musical, visual and
narrative expansion of
the story to make it
suitable as a full-length
ballet and
family-programming
alternative to The
Nutcracker. Musically, it
is scored for full

only many beautiful,
lyrical and moving
waltzes and other
classical themes, but
also rhythms such as
tango, boogie-woogie and
ragtime. Narratively, the
story has been adapted to

New
edition of Stravinsky's
largest work, his only
full-length work for the
theatre, and his first
major work in English. It
also represents the
culmination of his
neoclassical years, after
which he started to
rethink his musical
language. Inspired by an
exhibition in Chicago in
1947 of a series of
Hogarth prints, the
depiction of the ironic
progress of the
spendthrift heir of a
miser from wealth via
debt to madness and death
is, in essence, retained
in the opera. Auden and
Kallman's 'fable' wittily
grafts onto Hogarth's
quest narrative aspects
of, among other sources,
Classical pastoral, the
Faust legend, fairy tale,
circus, the Bible and
opera in many different
manifestations. This is
brilliantly matched by
Stravinsky's music, which
takes as its source the
whole of operatic history
from Monteverdi to Verdi
via Rossini and Donizetti
and large doses of
Mozart, yet it is neither
parody nor pastiche. The
RakeÂ’s Progress can
be appreciated on many
levels, which might
explain why it is still
one of only a handful of
20th-century operas never
to have been out of the
repertoire.

The title
Marchenbilder, or
Fairy-tale Pictures,
borrowed from Schumann,
awakens notions of music
which in itself has a
pictorial quality. In
all, the score comprises
six Fairytale Pictures,
the first three of which
form the first movement,
the next two the second,
whilst the sixth forms
the last movement which
is linked with the second
without a break. The
first two pictures have
the same duration - one
minute each - whilst the
remainder hesitantly
inerease in length until
the final picture is
almost five minutes long.
For 14 instruments.

This short
orchestral piece is a
tone poem based on a
passage from one of Hans
Christian Andersen's
lesser known fairytales,
THE WIND TELLS ABOUT
WALDEMAR DAAE AND HIS
DAUGHTERS, a mighty
allegory about the
transitoriness of Life,
about Vanity and Pride
and the inevitable
victory of Death (alias
the wind), whose scything
ravaging is sublimely
depicted by Andersen in
these few, truly
breathtaking lines: And
Winter rushed, Winter and
Summer they rushed, and
they rush, like I rush,
like the howling snow,
the flurrying apple
blossom, the scurrying
foliage; rush! rush! The
people too!.
