The world
has waited years, and
finally, last May, the
motion picture event of
the century exploded on
the screen. Jerry
Brubaker presents a
highly creative mix of
these great themes from
the power-packed John
Williams' score: Star
Wars (Main Theme),
Anakin's Theme, Augie's
Great Municipal Band,
Duel of the Fates, and
the End Credits. Every
orchestra in the world
will be playing this one!

Autograph
lays bare Mendelssohn's
Overture to A Midsummer
Night's Dream To this
day, Mendelssohns
epoch-making Overture to
A Midsummer Night's Dream
has been performed on the
basis of a more than
dubious transmission.
Neither the first edition
of the parts (1832), and
certainly not the print
of the score based on
these parts (1835) go
back directly to the
autograph of the
17-year-old composer,
which is now located in
Krakow. No wonder, since
Mendelssohn had breezily
given away his original
at an early date. The
result: during his
lifetime, versions were
published with his
authorization, even
though they were full of
unintended
inconsistencies. Yet the
autograph of 1826 is
unequivocal: it is clear,
practically free of
irregularities and
diverges considerably
from the corrupted
printed version.
Christian Martin Schmidt
comes up with
occasionally differing
musical passages, but
above all with logical
and compositionally
compelling performance
instructions, laying bare
to musical practice the
original form buried
beneath layers of
falsified material for
the first
time.

em>Gerard Schurmann
(b. 1924) is a Dutch
contemporary composer,
who was born in the Dutch
East Indies and lived in
England from childhood,
before setting in the USA
in 1981. His orchestral
works span 5 decades, and
he remains in demand for
commissions today.
The single-movement
Cello Concerto
The Gardens of
Exile was first
performed by the
Bournemouth Symphony
Orchestra in March 1991.
It received immediate
critical acclaim, with
one reviewer calling it
an extraordinarily fine
and imaginative
composition. It features
a tense orchestral build
up before the Cello
enters, gradually
emerging from the texture
and taking control of the
music. Asignificant
contribution to the
repertoire, this study
score is published by
Novello.

Inspired by
his friend, the composer
Balakirev Tchaikovsky
decided in 1869 to write
an overture to
Shakespeare's drama Romeo
and Juliet. The work was
completed the same year
and received its premiere
soon thereafter, on March
4th, 1870 in Moscow under
the direction of Nikolay
Rubinstein. Following the
performance the composer
worked over the piece
again at Balakirev's
instigation: he wrote a
new introduction and
altered the return and
the end, too. The new
version was first
performed under the baton
of Napravnik in St
Petersburg on February
5th, 1872. By that time
it had become clear that
the composition was
closer to the genre of
symphonic poem than to
that of a theatrical
preludewhich is also
indicated by the
subtitle: 'fantasy
overture'. In the 1880s
Tchaikovsky carried out
further changes in the
score and thus the third
version of Romeo and
Juliet emerged that was
first performed by
Ippolitov-Ivanov as
conductor in Tbilisi on
April 19th, 1886.

Nostaglia,
by Rossano Galante,
literally means a
sentimental longing or
wistful affection for the
past, typically for a
period or place with
happy personal
associations. This
orchestral setting is
lyrical, joyous, and
ultimately hopeful,
taking the listener to a

A strong full orchestra
work for festival or the

composition incorporates
two melodic themes that
build to a climactic
resolution that utilizes
the full ensemble. This

My Concerto
for Orchestra (2007) is a
twenty-minute work in
which different sections
of the orchestra, as well
as individual solos and
duos from within the
orchestra, are
highlighted as the music
unfolds. The work
continues my interest in
two-movement forms that
began with my Cello
Concerto (1991), and was
later developed in
Sortilege (1996) and
Symphony (Broken Consort)
(2004). In these works,
and in the Concerto for
Orchestra, each movement
is given equal weight and
importance with the
second developing earlier
material and taking it in
new directions.The
two-movement form of the
Concerto for Orchestra
derives from a symphonic
sonata structure,
reshaping the traditional
four-movement form and
combining this with
aspects of sonata form, a
tradition that goes back
to Liszt, Schoenberg and
Sibelius:1st movement (i)
exposition of ideas -
dramatic and sudden (ii)
scherzo and development 1
- resolute2nd movement
(iii) adagio - calm and
unhurried (iv)
development 2 with
recapitulation - intense
and energeticThe Concerto
for Orchestra was
commissioned by the
Musikalische Akademie des
Nationaltheatre-Orchester
s Mannheim with the
support of Die Landesbank
Baden-Wurttemberg for its
first two performances on
31st March and 1st April
2008 conducted by
Friedemann Layer. The
score is dedicated in

This highly
complex and virtuosic
ensemble work shows that
even in his 80s Sir Peter
Maxwell Davies shows no
signs of taking it easy.
Composed in Italy in
2012, The Trojan Games
depicts a sequence of
physical contests far
more intense than any
sporting event we're
familiar with today.
Composed by Doug Spata.

Taking its
name from the epicenter
of Southern jazz in
Memphis, this fun little
boogie will get the
orchestra moving!
Featuring accidentals and
chromatic passages
throughout, each section
gets its turn at the
jazzy, swaggering
melodies as well as the
bouncy accompaniment
parts. It's great
practice for chromatics
and a fun piece that
students will enjoy
learning.
