Young
string musicians will
enjoy performing this
heavy rock style piece
because it utilizes an
aggressive style and
mixed tonality similar to
'their' music that they
listen to for fun. The
concept behind the title
of this piece is that,
although we sometimes
move dully through our
daily routines, it is
good to take time to
appreciate the individual
moments that make up our
lives, like a child does
the first time they
experience something. All
parts are in first
position with few
accidentals or difficult
bowing patterns. At the
same time, this piece
will challenge your group
with its independent
voicings and syncopated,
interlocking rhythms.
This piece would add
variety to any school
concert, and would fit
nicely in a festival
program, especially one
that utilized several
different genres.

Stra
uss's first tone poem
distinguishes itself from
all other subsequent
orchestral compositions
in its existence in three
different versions. Even
among the operas and
other compositions in his
hand there is no other
work with a comparable
history of origin and
publication. What is
more, the final version
of Macbeth is the only
valid form of the work
and the only variant with
further sources (cf.
Critical Report) in
addition to the autograph
score. In contrast, the
second version has only
been preserved in an
autograph score and
autograph piano reduction
(the orchestral parts
which must have existed
have obviously not
survived). This was never
printed and was replaced
by the published third
version. The two
surviving versions should
therefore not be
considered to be of equal
status. Unlike the case
of Ariadne auf Naxos in
which the earlier version
was for a time the sole
valid alternative and was
yet never completely
displaced by the soon
dominating later version
of the opera, only the
final third version of
Macbeth is considered as
valid. Right from the
outset, it was a matter
of course for the editors
of the present volume to
include the second
version as a first
publication (in addition
to the above-mentioned
surviving pages of the
first version), albeit in
different forms. The
surviving pages of the
first version are
reproduced in facsimile
and the second version,
as a subordinate form of
the work, appears
alongside Strauss's piano
reduction in a modified
source edition, i.e.
without intervention on
the part of the editors.
The ultimate third
version is published as a
full edition (please
refer to the Critical
Report for further
details). In order to
facilitate a comparative
study of the second and
third versions, the
relevant page numbers of
the score are placed
opposite one another (the
autograph piano reduction
of the second version is
included at the end of
the music section of the
volume). The editors hope
that this synoptic
representation will
prompt interest in
further studies on
Strauss's art of
orchestration: a field of
research which has still
remained insufficiently
examined. A study of
Macbeth namely
illuminates as clearly as
could be wished how much
significance Strauss
allotted to sound
alongside form. The
subjects were not merely
intended to generate an
individual figure, but
also specific tonal
colours, and the
instrumentation was
simultaneously designed
to provide an optimal
communication of
thematic-motivic texture
to the audience. The 'new
path' threw up
consequences which caused
Strauss a considerable
amount of difficulty. He
was however a fast
learner and had already
swum free with Don Juan
and all the more with Tod
und Verklarung.

Soury, Thomas. Louis de
Cahusac.
Rameau's
“Les Fêtes de
l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†was long
considered second-rate
because its première
was associated with a
political event. Yet this
ballet abounds in novel
dramaturgical effects
that foreshadow his later
operas, such as
“Zaïsâ€,
“Zoroastreâ€
and “Les
Boradesâ€. Working
together with his
librettist Cahusac,
Rameau sought to weave
the dance numbers,
choruses and stage
machinery more tightly
into the main plot. He
also experimented with
stylistic devices unique
to this work, the most
famous being
unquestionably the scene
in which the Nile
overflows its banks (an
impressive ten-voice
double chorus with solo
voices and orchestra) and
the sextet from
“Arurisâ€, a
scoring found nowhere
else in his
uvre.
For the
first time, this
scholarly-critical
edition of “Les
Fêtes de l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†presents a
reference version of the
work that is based on all
the major sources for
both the libretto and the
music, including two
recent musical
discoveries. As most of
the performance material
for the première has
vanished, our edition is
based on the version
prepared for the Acadmie
Royale de Musique in
1748.

Thi
s edition unites all the
purely instrumental parts
of Rameau’s
comdie-ballet “Les
Paladins†for
performance as a suite in
the concert
hall.
In view of
the wealth of the
work’s musical
treasures and the
stylistic innovations
– similar to the
“Boradesâ€
– the rather
frosty reception of the
premiere series in the
spring of 1760 seems
completely
incomprehensible to us
today. It led to this
stage work not being
performed again until
well into the 20th
century. The story that
the comdie-ballet tells
is based on a fable by La
Fontaine, “Le Petit
chien qui secoue de
l’argent et des
pierreries†(i.e.
“The little dog who
shakes silver and
stonesâ€). In
medieval Veneto, the
guardian Anselme
undermines the love
affairs of his ward
Argies. Scenes of tragic
expression are contrasted
with folk-comic ones; and
last but not least, the
sexually ambiguous fairy
Manto may have caused
difficulties for the bold
work at the Paris
Opra.
This
critical edition is based
on the corresponding
volume issued in the
series “Opera omnia
Rameau†(BA
8870-01). Since
“Les
Paladins†remained
unpublished during
Rameau’s lifetime
and was also not included
in the “Œuvres
complètesâ€, this
is the first edition of
the work. It satisfies
both scholarly demand and
the practical needs of
musicians.
The
orchestral parts are
available on

TERRAINS VAGUES by Klaus
Rifbjerg, the Danish
Poet. I chose to adopt
this title for my
orchestral work, because
of its closeness in
associations: an
indeterminable, often
polarized, state of
rhythmic and tonal
ambiguity.The expression
seems created by the
Franch author, Victor
Hugo:And here lies the
fascination: in the kinds
of terrains vagues, which
are simultaniously
bizarre and ugly, as if
created by two alien
species of nature. To
watch the suburb is like
observing and amphibium:
trees vanish, roofs
appear, grass vanish,
cobble stones appear,
ploughing fields vanish,
shops appear, beaten
tracks vanish - passions
appear; the murmur of
Nature Divine ends, the
noise of Mankind takes
over. (Victor Hugo)Still,
the atmosphere as well as
the material of TERRAINS
VAGUES have its origin,
in my SYMPHONY NO. 6
(1999), the last minute
of which, cut up rough,
appears as the start of
my new work. The music of
TERRAINS VAGUES

To conclude
Series II (Dance Dramas)
from the Gluck Complete
Edition (GGA), this
volume of Christoph
Willibald Gluck's
earliest contributions to
the genre comprises six
ballet scores from 1759
(La Promenade, Les
Jardiniers, Les Turcs,
Les Savoiards, Les Amours
de Flore et Zphire, and
Le Suisse) as well as the
ballet music for Les
Vendanges, which dates
from 1761. These works
belong to the
compositions â also
called Krumau ballets
because of their musical
transmission â which
Gluck created in Vienna
between 1759 and 1765 for
the court theatres in
Laxenburg and
Schönbrunn as well as
the
Kärntnertortheater,
and which are to be
attributed to him as a
ballet composer around
the middle of the 18th
century in Viennese
theatre life based on the
considerations presented
in the general
preface.
Together
with volumes II/3 to
II/5, ballet music by
Gluck is available whose
sources come from the
former Schwarzenberg
court archive in Ceský
Krumlov, Czech Republic,
and which until the
Velvet Revolution of
1989, lay behind the Iron
Curtain remaining largely
inaccessible and
unexplored by Western
scholars. These volumes
reflect two fundamental
developments in Gluck
research: on the one
hand, they provide a
significantly expanded,
historically more
accurate idea of what it
meant to compose for the
ballet in the 18th
century; on the other
hand, they bring to light
an immense treasure trove
of sources formerly of
Viennese
provenance.
In
addition to the detailed
introduction by this
volumeâs editor on
the ballet choreographies
of Gasparo Angiolini and
Carlo Bernardi, on the
formation of the ballet
troupes of the Viennese
theatres in Gluck's early
years there, on ballet
types and genres, as well
as a detailed account of
the individual titles,
the volume includes a
general preface to
volumes II/3 through II/5
by Bruce Alan Brown,
which discusses Gluck's
ballet music in Vienna in
general as well as the
development of research
into this genre.
Extensive illustrations
(partly from the
so-called Durazzo
Collection) with
reference to the
choreographies enrich the
discussions. The ballet
works, which have
survived in only one
source each, appear in
print for the first time
in this volume of the
Gluck Complete
Edition.

and darabuka playing with
the hands differs
radically from that of
tom-tom or drumstick
technique or the playing
of pitched percussion
instruments such as the
marimba and
vibraphone.
Normally, in a percussion
concerto, the soloist has
to play surrounded by a
huge battery of
instruments, often behind
the orchestra. In Sieidi
he uses only nine
instruments, and he is in
front of the orchestra
the whole time. The
instruments are in a row
in front of the platform,
starting with the djembe
on the far right (as
viewed by the audience)
and ending with the
tam-tam on the far left.
The soloist plays only
one instrument at a
time.
The title
of the concerto, Sieidi,
is Sami - a language
spoken in the northern
region of Finland, Sweden
and Norway known as
Lapland. It denotes an
ancient cult place such
as an unusually-shaped
rock, sometimes also a
special rock face or even
a whole mountain
fell.

Hush er et studie i morke
og lys, kold og varm lyd.
Jeg har ogsa i dette
stykke forsogt at
introducere staerke
folelsesmaessige udtryk,
ved brug af instrumentale
farver og tonale
virkemidler. Titlen Hush
er forbundet med et slags
indre digt jeg har haft i
tankerne medens jeg
komponerede. Da jeg jo
ikke er digter i ord, er
det ufuldstaendigt og
utilstraekkeligt i sin
form, men derfor
alligevel meget godt
beskrivende for stykkets
vaesen. Det lyder
nogenlunde sadan her i
mit hoved:Hush little
heart- hush.!!was time
running too fast or did
the hours sometimesseem
long?,Were your beats too
many or were they too few
in the end?Hush little
heart- hushdid you see
too little or did you
sometimes see too
much?,was life too small
or was it sometimes
larger than life?was your
thirst quenched or did
you end up drained?hush,
hush, little heart-
hush!!,Don't be afraid,
maybe you knew all the
time:that one day you
would have to be still-or
maybe you didn't?Is that
why you were beating so
fast?hush, hush little
heart-hush,- be
comforted, 'cause even as
you feel so small Your
very existence is strange
and beautiful - so, hush,
hush, be comforted, be
still my beating
heart.

Symphony,
symphonic poem, fantasy,
or something else
entirely different? For a
long time while working
on the Sixth Symphony,
Sibelius was not certain
what his new orchestral
work was now about to
become or what to call
it. He had to interrupt
work on the symphony time
and again during the
Finnish civil war and
because of financial
difficulties that forced
him to earn a living with
little things. So, it is
not surprising that many
small ideas for other
works repeatedly
culminated in the Sixth.
In a letter to a friend,
he describes his early
ideas for the work: The
6th symphony is wild and
turbulent in character.
Gloomy with pastoral
contrasts. Probably in 4
movements with a
conclusion growing into a
dark orchestral shower in
which the main theme
drowns. The editor Kai
Lindberg now presents the
definitive version within
the context of the
Sibelius Complete
Edition.

The
Symphony No.39 In E Flat
K.543 was finished in
Vienna on 26th June 1788.
Together with the
symphonies in G minor and
C major Jupiter (all
three were composed in
less than a month), it
marks the summit of
Mozart's achievementin
symphonic form. Although
this symphony breaks no
new ground as regards the
use of orchestral
instruments, it is
nevertheless one of the
first examples of modern
orchestration, because
the resources of each
instrument and thevarious
combinations of timbre
are here exploited with
great skill.This

piece states the melody
in different ways,
sometimes briskly and
sometimes in augmentation

A showy and exciting

The
future of our fragile
world is in our hands. As
Sir David Attenborough
stated on the Climate
Conference in Glasgow on
November, 1st, 2021: ...
We are already in
trouble. The stability we
all depend on is
breaking. This story is
one of inequality, as
well as instability.
Today, those
who’ve done the
least to cause this
problem, are being the
hardest hit. Ultimately,
all of us will feel the
impact, some of which are
now unavoidable. ...
We’re going to
have to learn together,
how to achieve this,
ensuring none are left
behind. We must use this
opportunity to create a
more equal world and our
motivation should not be
fear, but hope. ... . We
must be more caring about
the wonderful place we
live in... our unique
home: Planet Earth. This
music is both a shoutout
to take care of our
planet and a hymn to the
beauty of this place. The
composition is suited for
stage as well as for the
enjoyment in music school
orchestral practice.

Written as
a metaphor for the
hardship and isolation
caused by the 2020
pandemic, this dramatic
tone poem is a testament
to courage and the
undaunted nature of the
human spirit. The piece
follows the voyage of a
ship and its crew to the
open sea and into a
devastating storm
resulting in the
separation of the crew
and its ultimate reunion.
The memorable melodies
and stirring harmonies
are sure to peak your
students' imaginations
while a variety of key
and time signatures will
challenge every section
of the advanced string
orchestra. A percussion
part has been included to
add touches of nautical
color, resulting in an
emotional, picturesque
voyage with a cinematic
flair. Check out Voyagers

Strat
oscape, by Swiss composer
Gauthier Dupertuis, is a
colorful and contrasting
work for wind orchestra,
depicting the view of our
earth as seen from the
stratosphere. This voyage
into the sky is pictural,
but also metaphorical, as
it is also about
distancing from our
world. The work is
divided into five
sections: I Ignition!, II
Broadness & The Big
Blue, III Stars Shining
from Down to Above, IV
Destructive Forces, V One
and Only Home Five
contrasting movements,
starting with Ignition in
which Gauthier Dupertuis
tries to musically convey
the majesty of our planet
seeing if from the
atmosphere, ending with
One and Only Hope, as the
title say, a message of
hope. In between three
movements that depict the
broadness of the
landscapes of our planet
(second movement), the
fragility of our earth at
night with only the stars
shining (third movement).
But also sheer reality in
the fourth movement when
the composer translates
into music the damage
caused toour planet by us
human beings.

This
popular folk song from
the Hebei Province, a
unique geographical area
surrounding the capital
city of Beijing, is a
great favorite there
because of its memorable
melody. In his score
notes Mr. Wang explains
that Chinese duets
resemble a
question-and-answer
conversation between
voices, which aptly
describes the form and
character of this setting
for student strings.
