<
p>The ballet â??Les
Fêtes d'Hbâ? deals
with the talents that are
usually the subject of
the Opra and are placed
at the service of love on
stage: poetry and
declamation (1st entre,
La Posie), song and
harmony (2nd entre, La
Musique) and finally
dance and choreography
(3rd entre, La Danse);
hence the alternative
title of the ballet
â??Les Talents
lyriquesâ?. In this
ballet opera, Rameau
consistently gives
priority to the female
roles. The prologue
glorifies Hb, the goddess
of youth, and her
alliance with love, while
â??La Posieâ? praises
the poetress Sappho, who
sings almost throughout,
and â??La Musiqueâ?
concentrates on the
omnipresent princess
Iphise; finally, â??La
Danseâ? has as its
main character the
shepherdess Ã?gl, who
excels in dance and
song.
Since the
premiere, the text of the
libretto has been
perceived as rather
unbalanced. Rameau
compensates for these
poetic shortcomings with
musical boldness and
innovations of the
highest order. Be it the
overture that throws
Lully's model overboard,
the varied choral
movements such as that of
the Thessalians â??Que
jusqu'au fond de nos
grottes profondesâ?,
the virtuoso arias such
as Sappho's air â??Un
jour pass dans les
tourmentsâ? or the
magnificent monologues
for Iphise and Tirte â??
the originality and
beauty of the music
testify to incredible
ingenuity.

Soury, Thomas. Louis de
Cahusac.
Rameau's
“Les Fêtes de
l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†was long
considered second-rate
because its première
was associated with a
political event. Yet this
ballet abounds in novel
dramaturgical effects
that foreshadow his later
operas, such as
“Zaïsâ€,
“Zoroastreâ€
and “Les
Boradesâ€. Working
together with his
librettist Cahusac,
Rameau sought to weave
the dance numbers,
choruses and stage
machinery more tightly
into the main plot. He
also experimented with
stylistic devices unique
to this work, the most
famous being
unquestionably the scene
in which the Nile
overflows its banks (an
impressive ten-voice
double chorus with solo
voices and orchestra) and
the sextet from
“Arurisâ€, a
scoring found nowhere
else in his
uvre.
For the
first time, this
scholarly-critical
edition of “Les
Fêtes de l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†presents a
reference version of the
work that is based on all
the major sources for
both the libretto and the
music, including two
recent musical
discoveries. As most of
the performance material
for the première has
vanished, our edition is
based on the version
prepared for the Acadmie
Royale de Musique in
1748.

Lent
& Easter Musical This new
45-minute, Easter musical
from Jack Schrader
utilizes three powerful
devices to dramatically
portray Christ's passion
and glory: well-conceived
choral music,
scintillating orchestral
accompaniment, and
passionate narrations,
with much detail drawn
from the gospels. The
story begins before the
Triumphal Entry of
Christ, and ends, by
implication, beyond his
Ascension. Chorally you
will find many poignant
and powerful moments.
Talented orchestrator,
Mark Kellner, has
provided exquisite
instrumental mosaics to
underscore and support
both choir and narration.
Yet the simple use of
piano accompaniment would
also be very satisfying.
At the most high and holy
time of the Christian
year, this musical
presentation powerfully
proclaims the truth of
the Gospel, and confronts
listener and performer
alike with the claims of
Jesus Christ, the Son of
God.
The
Orchestration contains a
Conductor's Score and
parts for: Flute, Oboe,
Clarinet, 3 Trumpets, 2
Horns, 2 Trombones, Tuba,

The
musical material derives
from transformations of
the carol melody, which
only appears with any
degree of literalness in
a dream like passage
close to the beginning
and vanishes –
though, in some sense,
its dna is present in
every bar. The piece is
through composed and
consists of slow –
at times, elegiac
– music flanking
fast central episodes.
Two chords, which seem to
signify a kind of
question at the very
beginning, return twice,
later in the work.

Considered
as a whole, Moeran's
music has a strong
individuality and a very
personal flavour. The
recipe is the composer's
own, and there is none
other like it. Yet,
though he has amply
covered the field of
orchestral music, chamber
music, concertos, and
smaller vocal works, one
would not describe
Moeran's as a varied
talent. He keeps to his
centre, which is a purely
musical one.

The
resurrection of Jesus
changed the world and
continues to change the
world today. Jesus! The
Resurrection of the
Messiah tells the
intimate story of the
grief, the fear, the
hope, the love, the
tenderness, and the
longing of God for His
children expressed
through the life, death,
and resurrection of
Jesus. Mary McDonald and
Rose Aspinall combined
their talents to create a
compelling musical that
will take you through the
emotions of the Triumphal
Entry, the raising of
Lazarus, the Last Supper,
the moment in the garden
when Jesus is arrested,
the Crucifixion, and
finally to the joyous
Resurrection. This work
may be programmed in its
entirety or presented in
segments during Palm
Sunday, Holy Week, and
Resurrection Sunday
worship settings. It may
be done with choir and
piano alone or can
include the optional
orchestrations created by
Michael Lawrence and Ed
Hogan. This powerful
worship tool is an
inspiring reminder of the
life-changing impact of
this Deliverer, Redeemer,
and
Savior….Jesus!

Like Hamlet
Overture, originating at
about the same time,
Tchaikovsky's 5th
symphony, composed in
1888, focuses on the
human existential
question: To be or not to
be - triumph over fate or
triumph of fate? The per
aspera ad astra
dramaturgy underlying the
symphony culminates in
triumphant certainty. If
Tchaikovsky was initially
euphoric, then severe
self-doubts befell him
after he conducted the
premiere in St.
Petersburg. These doubts
demonstrably led him to
make interpretative
changes for the Hamburg
performance in 1889,
including a cut in the
finale. Only with the
extremely positive
response to this
performance did his
doubts dispel.
Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky
himself never again
conducted the 5th
symphony. It was only
posthumously established
in the repertoire through
Arthur Nikisch's
commitment. The new
edition's textual
criticism takes into
account besides the
autograph and first
edition also the first
edition's orchestral
parts, together with the
piano arrangement
produced from the
autograph by Sergei
Taneyev. In addition to
thoroughly clarifying
dynamics and
articulation, the source
comparison also corrected
many errors and solved
problematical passages,
such as, for instance,
the trombone entry in m.
372 of the finale.
Considered, moreover, for
the first time has been
the composer's doubts
about his work and its
ambiguities, frequently
successfully suppressed
in the history of its
performance and
reception. Tchaikovsky's
conductor's copy is
unfortunately lost, hence
his alterations made for
the Hamburg performance
are not precisely known.
They have survived only
indirectly through
remarks that Willem
Mengelberg left to
posterity, for which he
could draw on
Tchaikovsky's conductor's
score and oral references
by the composer's brother
Modest. So, anyone
wishing to deal seriously
with the work's
certainties will not be
able to do so in the
future without having
also to deal with its
uncertainties.
