A slow and
somber Grave introduction
leads to a light-hearted
Allegro, presenting an
ideal piece to teach
sonata form to your
students. The clearly
marked bowings and
artist-level fingerings
will save precious
rehearsal minutes and
contribute to a
professional sound. This
arrangement re-scores the
first movement of
Sinfonia No. 9 from six
voices, requiring two
separate viola parts, to
the traditional
five-voice string
orchestra. Consistent
with selected
professional performances
of the work, the first of
two recapitulations has
been seamlessly omitted
to create a more balanced
form, eliminate
redundancies akin to
counterpoint exercises,
and showcase the young
composer's emerging
creativity by emphasizing
his striking use of the
key of A-major before
reaffirming the home key.
The elimination of a
repeat reduces the
duration to 8:30. (11:30)

After the
first sketches had been
put to paper in 1815,
Beethoven only finally
put the finishing touches
to his last completed
symphony in 1824. With
its extended finale in
which soloists and choir
perform, building the
bridge to the symphonic
cantata with their
invocation of fraternity,
it marks a caesura in the
history of the symphony
that echoed long into the
nineteenth century. The
main theme of the ode
“To Joy†by
Friedrich Schiller, set
to music in the final
movement, has become one
of the most popular
melodies in all of
classical music and today
serves as the official
anthem of Europe. Based
on the musical text of
the Beethoven Complete
Edition and furnished
with a new preface, this
recently prepared edition
reflects the latest in
Beethoven scholarship.
Now,in this study
edition, it is available
to everyone at a
reasonable price and in a
handy format.

Rameau's
“Les Fêtes de
l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†was long
considered second-rate
because its première
was associated with a
political event. Yet this
ballet abounds in novel
dramaturgical effects
that foreshadow his later
operas, such as
“Zaïsâ€,
“Zoroastreâ€
and “Les
Boradesâ€. Working
together with his
librettist Cahusac,
Rameau sought to weave
the dance numbers,
choruses and stage
machinery more tightly
into the main plot. He
also experimented with
stylistic devices unique
to this work, the most
famous being
unquestionably the scene
in which the Nile
overflows its banks (an
impressive ten-voice
double chorus with solo
voices and orchestra) and
the sextet from
“Arurisâ€, a
scoring found nowhere
else in his
uvre.
For the
first time, this
scholarly-critical
edition of “Les
Fêtes de l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†presents a
reference version of the
work that is based on all
the major sources for
both the libretto and the
music, including two
recent musical
discoveries. As most of
the performance material
for the première has
vanished, our edition is
based on the version
prepared for the Acadmie
Royale de Musique in
1748.

Ravel's
multi-layered homage in
Breitkopf UrtextIn his
homage Le Tombeau de
Couperin, Ravel is less
specifically interested
in Couperin than in
French music of the late
18th century. In his
preface, editor
Jean-Francois Monnard
explains how Ravel paid a
moving and intensely
personal tribute to the
events of World War I
with his multi-layered
work. The orchestral
version goes back to the
original, eponymous piano
suite (1914-17). Then, in
1919, the composer
selected four pieces from
this source, orchestrated
them with all of his
grace and artistry; the
result provides a
charming contrast to the
pseudo-Baroque musical
idiom, and places the
pieces in a new and
effective sequence. The
work quickly gained great
popularity immediately
after the concertant
world premiere, when the
three dance movements of
the orchestral suite were
included in a ballet
production.The
underpinnings of
Monnard's edition are
provided by the most
important sources. The
preface features a great
deal of information on
the interpretation and
performance history of
the work. This is the
fifth major Ravel work
now available in print
from Breitkopf
Urtext.

Composed by
Manuel de Falla during
his lengthy residence in
Paris, these three
symphonic impressions for
piano and orchestra are
an expressive work
bringing the southern
Spanish gardens, which
are laid out in the
European and
Arabic-Moorish tradition,
to life. The influence of
contemporary French music
is noticeable in this
composition. Despite many
modifications, involving
among other things, the
scoring, number of
movements, as well as
layout and content, the
basic idea of a nocturnal
impression is retained
from the outset. The work
was finished - and
likewise the orchestral
material - only shortly
before its premiere on 9
April 1916, which was a
great success. World War
I prevented its
publication, though
further performances
followed, played then
from manuscript material.
The Urtext edition
presented by Ullrich
Scheideler takes as the
main source the first
edition of the score. The
Critical Report gives
detailed information
about the source
situation.

Sandwiched
between the popular
Symphonies Nos. 7 and 9,
the relatively short
Eighth Symphony finds
itself in a difficult
position even now. Right
after the premiere in
February 1814, one critic
opined that it had made
“no splash.â€
At first glance it makes
recourse to already
outmoded forms and
genres, even reviving a
minuet for the third
movement (in lieu of a
slow movement) after an
Allegretto scherzoso. But
Beethoven engages
intensively with music
history, breaking apart
traditional procedures
and patterns and finding
new, surprising solutions
that make his Eighth a
milestone in symphonic
history. Based on the
musical text of the
Beethoven Complete
Edition and furnished
with a new preface, this
recently prepared edition
reflects the latest in

The
question Why add music to
such perfect poetry?
preoccupied Schumann long
and intensively. His
first compositional
approach to Goethes Faust
began in 1844, but it was
not until 1851 that he
finally completed the
Scenes. At Liszts
suggestion, Schumann
added an overture in
1853, a symphonic
instrumental introduction
which atmospherically
evokes the action of the
Scenes but has no direct
thematic reference to
them. As an independent
overture, the work has
been played relatively
rarely in concert halls
to this day; the general
prejudice towards
Schumanns late works was
no doubt partly
responsible for this. The
first Urtext edition of
the overture was based on
the autograph score that
was revised by Schumann
and served as the
principal source. It
should give new impulses
to the future reception
of this work which Paul
Dukas hailed as a
miracle, from beginning
to end.
