Eino
juhani Rautavaara
(1928-2016) was one of
Finland's internationally
most successful
composers. He made his
major breakthrough with
the Symphony No. 7, Angel
of Light, in the 1990s,
but his output includes
numerous classic operas,
concertos, chamber music
and choral works.
Over his extensive
career, he progressed
from Neo-Classicism to
strict dodecaphony to
free-tonal
Neo-Romanticism,
combining modernism with
mystical romanticism in
his later works.
According to the
composer, the role of the
composer is to be
mediator, a midwife, who
helps the music become
alive on its own terms;
Listen to what the music
wants to tell you, he
told his composition
students, sense where it
wants to go.
Rautavaara rose to great
international fame with
the success of his
Symphony No. 7, Angel of
Light (1995) powered by
the prize-winning
recording (Helsinki
Philharmonic, Segerstam,
Ondine label) later the
same year. Many
high-profile
international commissions
followed, creating yet
more prize-winning
recordings. To mark
the 25th anniversary of
the work's premiere - in
its original form as the
Bloomington Symphony - by
the Bloomington Symphony
Orchestra and conductor
David Pickett, Fennica
Gehrman is publishing an
entirely new edition of
the symphony based on all
available sources,
including the composer's
manuscript and his
markings in various
printed scores. This
is a large-sized
conductor score with
extensive analysis of the
work and its genesis.

This
is a creative worship
experience built around
prayers (both sung and
spoken) for our world's
leaders as well as
elusive goals such as
peace, the end of
terrorism and racism, and
prayers for the needy in
our world. It is global
rather than nationalistic
in scope and is
distinctively Christian
in nature, with prayers
that the church may take

appropriate consideration
for a missions or global

as any general observance
where an inspirational
worship experience is
desired.

Nacht Und
Trompeten by Hans
Abrahamsen (1981).
Programme note: The piece
is dedicated to Hans
Werner Henze, from whose
request the piece arose.
The music unfolds in a
space, in which the
memory of the earlier
music has the same
reality as the music of
today. But the music of
the memory is naturally
distant and vague,
whereas the music of
today is present and
gesticulated. In the
opening section the past
and the present are
clearly separated, but
during the piece, this
balance is lifted, as the
music of the past
(trumpet signals,
Sicilian melodicity,
romantic Pathos,
strawinskian
neo-classicism) in a
dynamic and often
dramatic surrealistic
play with minimalism and
modernism oftoday is
unravelled.

Laszlo
Dubrovay wrote the
following about Liszt and
the piece now being
published: +Liszt was for
me the most important
composer in my youth, and
as a pianist I played a
great number of his
works. I admired him as
an innovator, who
enriched the technique of
playing the instrument in
a manner unparalleled in
piano literature. Later
his creative genius
captivated me, as he
opened up new paths for
the future. His works
paved the way for
impressionism,
expressionism,
20th-century folklorism

realisations of spiritual

Rega
rded as a New Zealand
classic, Ritchie's
Concertino (1960) takes
its special force from
what might be called the
typically semi-detached
New Zealand viewpoint.
The Concertino is a
superbly crafted
achievement, its texture
enriched by the idealism
of the post-war English
pastoralists, the
neoclassicism of Walter
Piston (who Ritchie
studied with at Harvard
in 1956-57), the
delighted play of an
imaginative harmonist,
and the individualism of
a New Zealander
unconcerned with musical
regionalism.

Hiding behind the modest
title study is a true
masterwork by Finland's
founding father of
musical modernism. It is
the final part of a
trilogy written in the
1920's, to which the
works Fantasia and Pan
also belong. It suffered
the same fate as
Merikanto's String Sextet
and Nonet: the composer
tore pages out in fits of
frustration and
self-criticism. Paavo
Heininen, an important
Finnish modernist in his
own right, has undone the
damage and reconstructed
his composition teacher's
work for posterity.

Jeder
Kultur wohnt eine Moral
inne, welche die
menschlichen Handlungen
bewertet und in zwei
Kategorien einteilt:
gut/schlecht,
positiv/negativ usw. Der
Titel HARTO - zu deutsch:
satt, uberdrussig -
bezieht sich auf das
Unbehagen, das diese
dichotomische Auffassung
hervorruft: eine
Auffassung, die
gleichwohl in uns
verwurzelt ist und gerade
darum den Prozess
Wahrnehmung Ausserung
Kenntnis beeinflusst, ihm
zugehort. Tatsachlich
wird das musikalische
Phanomen dualistisch
konzipiert: Klang =
Ton/Gerausch;
Tonhohenanordnung =
Konsonanz/Dissonanz,
tonal/atonal; Struktur =
symmetrischer Bau
(Vordersatz/Nachsatz),
das scholastische Ideal
des Gleichgewichts, das
seinerseits eine
Symmetrieachse zur
Voraussetzung hat. Diese
Strukturierung des
Materials ergibt sich aus
dem fast
ausschliesslichen
Interesse des Komponisten
an den expressiven
Moglichkeiten des
musikalischen Apparats.
Die Motivation des
Komponierens aus dem
Drang, etwas Inneres
ausdrucken zu mussen,
erscheint mir jedoch
heute der Grundlage zu
entbehren und folglich
auch unnotig. Die
letztliche
Daseinsberechtigung
dieser Motivation liegt
in der dualistischen
Vorstellung, die beim
Menschen zwischen Leib
und Seele unterscheidet.
Ein Bluff, Produkt
kleinlicher
Disputiersucht. Eine
Analyse auf der Basis
empirischer Logik stellt
fest, dass es keine Seele
gibt, sondern ein
Nervensystem mit
bestimmten Fahigkeiten,
und dass nichts
auszudrucken ist, weil
Musik die Empfindungen
des Komponisten nicht
wiedergeben kann. sondern
lediglich unbestimmte
Eindrucke im Horer
erzeugt. Da aber jede
bewusste Wahrnehmung
Erkenntnis ist, ware es
nun die Aufgabe des
Komponisten, Musik mit
diesem Ziel, das heisst:
Musik als
Erkenntnismittel zu
schaffen. Dies alles ist
der Versuch, die
Erkenntnistheorie von
David Hume und anderen,
spateren Epistemologen
auf Musik anzuwenden. Der
Beitrag des Empirismus
zur Erkenntnistheorie
wurde zwar in der
wissenschaftlichen
Forschung genutzt, fand
jedoch in der Kunst kaum,
in der Musik keinerlei
Beachtung. Warum?
Vielleicht, weil in der
Musik noch immer der
naive, >>expressive<<
Komponist vorherrscht,
den das elitar-bourgeoise
Publikum verlangt und dem
es applaudiert. Der
Einwand, dass Kunst immer
bourgeois war und es
weiterhin ist, gibt zwar
keine Losung, sollte aber
auch nicht unterschatzt
werden. Ich habe HARTO in
zwei Teilen konzipiert,
wobei jeder Teil im
Verhaltnis zum anderen
sowohl irgendwie das
gleiche als auch das
Gegenteil darstellt. Der
Grund fur diese
Zweiteilung des Werkes
ist leicht aus dem vorhin
Gesagten abzuleiten. Als
Vorarbeit zur Komposition
habe ich versucht, die
historische dichotomische
Gestaltung des Materials
besonders hervorzuheben,
und zwar durch eine
Potenzierung jener
Aspekte, die diesen
-zweigeteilten<<
Charakter in sich tragen.
Ich habe also den
Zeitverlauf lediglich als
eine Folge von Spannungs-
und
Entspannungs-Einheiten
betrachtet; ich habe
Tonhohen-Anordnungen
verwendet, die
ausschliesslich auf
Symmetrie beruhen; ich
habe zweiteilige
Strukturen aufgebaut,
deren Halften durch eine
Pause mit konstantem Wert
geteilt sind; ich habe -
je nach den Moglichkeiten
des Orchesters - den
Gerausch- oder Tonanteil
des Klanges ubertrieben.
Dieser Gedankengang wurde
im Hinblick darauf
realisiert, neue
Anwendungsmoglichkeiten
zu finden, die fur das
Ziel einer Musik als
Erkenntnismittel von
Nutzen sein
konnen.(Manuel
Hidalgo).

The
pictorial title of DIA
(1979) with its wedge
form refers to the idea
of an arrow pointing
through the
multidimensional musical
space of the piece -- the
beginning of a trajectory
crossing through all of
it, visiting every point,
but a trajectory free of
any preordained form or
curvature. The grand old
man of Finnish Modernism
Paavo Heininen (b. 1938)
sees form as an idea of
time and reflects it in
one continuous movement
with five distinct
sections. DIA was
commissioned NOMUS
(National Federation of
Swedish Orchestral
Associations) and
premiered by the Finnish
Radio Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Leif
Segerstam in September
1979. The edition of the

Russian
composer, Alexander
Glazounov (1865-1936) was
director of the Saint
Petersburg Conservatory
for a large part of his
career. As a prolific
composer, his works were
always well-received,
Concerto in E-flat for
Alto Saxophone and String
Orchestra being no
exception. Glazounov's
compositional style was
particularly significant
due to his successful
reconciliation of
nationalism and
cosmopolitanism in
Russian music. Composed
in 1934, a typical
performance of
Concerto in E-flat for
Alto Saxophone and String
Orchestra last about
fourteen minutes and is
played without a pause.
The work is highly
romantic and remains part
of the standard Saxophone
repertoire. For all
advanced saxophonists,
Glazounov's Concerto
in E-flat ensures a
riveting and exciting
performance for players
and audiences alike.

I
wrote my First Symphony
while studying in the
United States in 1955,
but the work has since
undergone two substantial
changes. The original
four-movement structure
changed into a
two-movement structure in
1988, with an expansive,
Romantic and pathos-laden
principal movement
followed by a grotesque
and ironic scherzo. This
version seems to owe
something to Dmitri
Shostakovich, one of the
idols of 1950s Modernism
in Finland. Later I found
that the structure was
out of balance, and in
2003 I added a lyrical
slow movement (Poetico)
between the two existing
ones. In order to
preserve the 1950s spirit
of the original work, I
based the slow movement
on solo song written
around the same time
(third movement from the
song cycle Die
Liebenden).

Following
nearly 4 years without
having composed a new
symphony, although still
writing opera overtures
and works from orchestral
serenades, Mozart
composed the ?Paris?
Symphony. Mozart received
the commission from
Joseph Legros, when him
and his mother were in
Paris in 1778.Mozart
composed the work for the
largest orchestra he?d
written for until then in
a symphony, marking the
first time which he had
used Clarinets in one of
his symphonies. Mozart
had taken pains to write
the work in a style that
would appeal to the
French and, despite a
dismal rehearsal, the
first performance was
well received.Available
here is a study score of
Mozart?s Symphony No.31
in D ?Paris? K.297, which
is ideal for study and
perusal usage..

Like Hamlet
Overture, originating at
about the same time,
Tchaikovsky's 5th
symphony, composed in
1888, focuses on the
human existential
question: To be or not to
be - triumph over fate or
triumph of fate? The per
aspera ad astra
dramaturgy underlying the
symphony culminates in
triumphant certainty. If
Tchaikovsky was initially
euphoric, then severe
self-doubts befell him
after he conducted the
premiere in St.
Petersburg. These doubts
demonstrably led him to
make interpretative
changes for the Hamburg
performance in 1889,
including a cut in the
finale. Only with the
extremely positive
response to this
performance did his
doubts dispel.
Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky
himself never again
conducted the 5th
symphony. It was only
posthumously established
in the repertoire through
Arthur Nikisch's
commitment. The new
edition's textual
criticism takes into
account besides the
autograph and first
edition also the first
edition's orchestral
parts, together with the
piano arrangement
produced from the
autograph by Sergei
Taneyev. In addition to
thoroughly clarifying
dynamics and
articulation, the source
comparison also corrected
many errors and solved
problematical passages,
such as, for instance,
the trombone entry in m.
372 of the finale.
Considered, moreover, for
the first time has been
the composer's doubts
about his work and its
ambiguities, frequently
successfully suppressed
in the history of its
performance and
reception. Tchaikovsky's
conductor's copy is
unfortunately lost, hence
his alterations made for
the Hamburg performance
are not precisely known.
They have survived only
indirectly through
remarks that Willem
Mengelberg left to
posterity, for which he
could draw on
Tchaikovsky's conductor's
score and oral references
by the composer's brother
Modest. So, anyone
wishing to deal seriously
with the work's
certainties will not be
able to do so in the
future without having
also to deal with its
uncertainties.

Richard
Strauss (1864-1949) wrote
his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D
MINOR, Op. 8, between
1881 and 1882, and it
remained his only foray
in that genre. Composed
while a teenager and
still in school. While
still very much a product
of the Romantic era
tradition, the work is
not considered as
distinctive as the works
he would produce only a
few years later, and
Strauss himself later
ridiculed the work.
Still, with inventive and
bold writing in the solo
and hints of his mature
harmonic style to come,
there is much to enjoy in
the work, including its
warmth, youthful
sincerity, and lyrical
expression, so that it
should not be dismissed
as mere juvenilia, either
by contemporary audiences
or Strauss himself. The
chamber version of the
concerto was first
performed in Vienna on
December 5, 1882, with
the dedicatee Benno
Walter on the violin
while Strauss played his
own piano reduction. The
premiere for the
orchestral version would
take place seven years
later in Cologne on March
4, 1890, with Walter
again performing the solo
with an orchestra
conducted by Franz
Wüllner.
