Pour cette composition, Schubert s'inspira du Septuor op. 20 de Beet­hoven, dont il reprit le caractère divertissant et la structure en six parties, en rajoutant seulement un deuxième violon à l'instrumentation. Dans une lettre, il fit figurer son octuor parmi les oeuvres de musique de chambre qui lui permettraient de se frayer 'la voie vers la grande symphonie'. On ne peut plus déterminer si la composition fut commandée par le comte Ferdinand Troyer, lequel tenait un salon musical à Vienne et jouait personnellement de la clarinette. En revanche, il est certain que Schubert composa l'oeuvre en quelques semaines au début de l'année 1824 et que la création eut lieu peu après chez Troyer. Elle figure aujourd'hui parmi les oeuvres les plus populaires pour les grands ensembles de musique de chambre. / Octuor A Vent
