Composer's
Note Once, we had a joint
conception to create a
concert telling a life
story. The premiere was
planned to take place on
the Acropolis in Athens.
It was intended to be a
large event, a hybrid of
a mystery play and an
opera. Krzysztof
Kieslowski would be the
director, Krzysztof
Piesiewicz was
responsible for the
script, and I was
planning to compose the
music. We thought it
might be the first of a
series of musical
performances, to be
developed in various
interesting places around
the world in the next few
years. But it was life
that authored a different
ending: Krzysztof
Kieslowski died in March
of 1996. The first part
of Requiem for My Friend
is meant as a farewell to
Krzysztof Kieslowski. I
dedicate this music to
him. Zbigniew
Preisner.

Gesualdo,
Don Carlo, Furst von
Venosa (1560-1613) gehort
zu den eigenwilligsten
italienischen
Madrigal-Komponisten der
Spatrenaissance. Seine
ungewohnlich kuhne,

modern klingende
Harmonik, seine
chromatischen
Stimmfortschreitungen,
seine ubersteigerte
expressive Tonsprache
regten mich schon vor
Jahren zu einer grosseren
Orgelkomposition an und
inspirierten mich 1981 zu
den >>Sinfonischen

Werk ist eine

choralartige typische
Klangbeispiele aus
Gesualdos spaten
funfstimmigen Madrigalen
(4., 5. u. 6. Band)
werden teils streng,
teils frei zitiert und
von Holz- oder

Diese Zitate gliedern,

des gesamten Werks. Jedes
Zitat steht zu Beginn
eines neuen
Satzabschnitts; die
darauffolgenden
>>Metamorphosen<<
entwickeln sich als
rhapsodische
kontrastreiche
Charakterstucke. Im
>>Preludio<< werden aus
den vertonbaren

sich lineare

Der dritte Teil lauft als
Passacaglia (Thema ist
der Bass eines
Gesualdo-Zitats) in
mehreren Variationen ab.
Im vierten Abschnitt
dominiert lebhafte

Scored for
baritone solo, small
'narrator' chorus, large
chorus and orchestra,
MacMillan's first Passion
setting was composed in
2007. Lasting 87 minutes
the work is divided into
two parts, with 10
movements overall. As
Paul Spicer has
commented, “The
originality of the St
John Passion lies in
MacMillan's ability to
mix old with new, rather
in the manner of Bach in
his day. There are
passages of sumptuous
polyphony and there is a
fresh look at the text
where passages of Latin
are interspersed with the
Gospel story in English.
In movement seven ('Jesus
and his Mother'),
MacMillan introduces not
only part of the Stabat
Mater but also his own
words ('Lully, lulla, my
dear darling'). The final
movement, which is purely
orchestral, is a kind of
via doloroso march with a
Scots lament over quite
brass chords. The string
writing here, with its
elegiac cello lines, is
deeply reminiscent of the
early 20th-century
English school. This
should be the War Requiem
of the 21st
century.&rdquo.

Leoš
Janácek’s
symphonic fragment Dunaj
(The Danube) dates from
the period of the
composition of
“Katya
Kabanovaâ€. The
composer was not
concerned with a
musical-picturesque
description of a river
landscape, but with the
mythical link between
women’s destinies
and
water.
“Pale
green waves of the
Danube! There are so many
of you, and one followed
by another. You remain
interlocked in a
continuous flow. You
surprise yourselves where
you ended up – on
the Czech shores! Look
back downstream and you
will have an impression
of what you have left
behind in your haste. It
pleases you here. Here I
will rest with my
symphony.†Thus
Leoš Janácek
described the idea behind
the composition project
which occupied him in
1923/24. However, after
further work, it remained
incomplete in 1926. His
“symphonyâ€
entitled Dunaj has
survived as a
continuously-notated,
four-movement bundle of
sketches in score form.
It is one of the works
which occupied him until
his death. The scholarly
reconstruction by the two
Brno composers Miloš
Štedron and Leoš
Faltus closely follows
the original
manuscript.
A
whole conglomeration of
motifs stands behind the
incomplete work. What at
first seems like a
counterpart to
Smetana’s Vltava,
in fact doesn’t
turn out to be a musical
depiction of the Danube.
On the contrary, the
fateful link between the
destiny of women, water
and death permeates the
range of motifs found in
the work. It seems to be
no coincidence that
Janácek, whilst
working on the opera
Katya Kabanova, in which
the Volga, as the river
bringing death plays an
almost mythical role,
planned a Danube
symphony, and that its
content was linked with
the destiny of women: in
the sketches, two poems
were found which may have
provided the stimulus for
several movements of the
symphony. He copied a
poem by Pavla
Kriciková into the
second movement, in which
a girl remarks that
whilst bathing in a pond,
she was observed by a
man. Filled with shame,
the young naked woman
jumps into the water and
drowns. The outer
movements likewise draw
on the poem
“Lola†by the
Czech writer Sonja
Špálová,
published under the
pseudonym Alexander
Insarov. This is about a
prostitute who asks for
her heart’s
desire: she is given a
palace, but then goes on
a long search for it and
is finally no longer
wanted by anyone. She
suffers, feels cold and
just wants a warm fire.
Janácek adds his
remark “she jumps
into the Danube†to
the inconclusive
ending.
To these
tangible literary models
is added Adolf
Veselý’s verbal
account which reports
that the composer wanted
to portray “in the
Danube, the female sex
with all its passions and
driving forcesâ€.
The third movement is
said to characterise the
city of Vienna in the
form of a
woman.
It is
evident that in his
composition, Janácek
was not striving for a
simple, natural lyricism.
The River Danube is
masculine in the Slavic
language –
“ten Dunajâ€
– and assumes an
almost mythical
significance in the
national character,
indeed often also a role
bringing death. The four
movements are motivically
conceived. Elements of
sound painting, small
wave-like figures in the
first movement, motoric,
driving movements in the
third are obvious
evocations of water. And
the content and the
literary level are easy
to discover. The
“tremolo of the
four timpaniâ€,
which was amongst
Janácek’s first
inspirations, appears in
the second movement. It
is not difficult to
retrace in it the fate of
the drowning bather. The
oboe enters lamentoso
towards the end of the
movement over timpani
playing tremolo, its
descending figure is
taken over by the flute,
then upper strings and
intensified considerably.
The motif of drowning
– Lola’s
despair – returns
again in the fourth
movement in the clarinet,
before the work ends
abruptly and
dramatically.
One
special effect is the use
of a soprano voice in the
motor-driven third
movement. The singer
vocalises mainly in
parallel with the solo
oboe, but also in
dialogue with other parts
such as the viola
d’amore, which
Janácek used in
several late works as a
sort of “voice of
loveâ€.

SYNOPSIS
Aribert Reimann's
'Trilogie lyrique' is
based on three plays by
Maurice Maeterlinck: In
L'Intruse, a family is
sitting at the table with
their blind grandfather.
They are waiting for the
doctor to arrive and tend
to his daughter who is
lying ill in bed after
having given birth: her
new-born son has not yet
made a single sound. The
old man senses that
something is wrong due to
the uneasy atmosphere in
the room. Who is sitting
in our midst? he asks. He
is the only one who
cansee the presence of
death. Interieur: Once
again a family is
gathered round the table
in the evening, but this
time we observe the
action from outside,
looking through the
window with the
grandfather and a
stranger: no sound can be
heard. Outside the house,
the stranger reports that
the eldest daughter has
drowned and that he has
pulled her out of the
river. Although the
corpse is already being
carried through the
village to the family,
the grandfather cannot
bring himself to destroy
this idyll. La Mort de
Tintagiles: The young
Tintagiles is told a
story about a mysterious
castle and the aged queen
who has all potential
heirsto the throne
murdered. His siblings
sense that Tintagiles has
been summoned to the
castle to be murdered,
but nobody openly
expresses this fact. It
is the sinister
messengers of death from
the interludes, now
visible as the queens
servants, who ful?l her
demand and snatch the
sleeping boy from his
sisters'arms. Commentary
'In comparison with his
Medea for example with
its stormy outbreaks of
emotion and violence,
Reimann's score is worked
in an impressive
refinement of sound. It
begins with rumbling,
hesitating and expressive
music in the first
section, demanding highly
ingenious sound effects
from the lower strings
including tapping and
faltering glissandos in
its noisy expression of
mortal fear. Inthe second
part, the woodwind
formation plays at times
almost in chamber music
fashion and is then
suddenly painfully
shrill. The third part
luxuriates and rages in
its rich, full
orchestration. The manner
in which Reimann displays
his mastery in textural
shading, the invention of
sounds welling up and
fading away, the rhythmic
and melodic capacity of
suffering and the music's
inner violence are all
utterly
compelling.'(Wolfgang
Schreiber, Opernwelt,
November 2017).

What is
also amazing is that the
first text-critical
edition prepared by the
Czech Smetana expert
Milan Pospisil in 1999,
which had entailed an
exhaustive evaluation of
the sources and been
given a full
text-critical editorial
treatment as a Eulenburg

resonance of any kind
among performers since no
performance material had
been published. After 15
years, Pospisils edition
is finally being
completed in a manner
suitable for practice:
with a conducting score

which will ensure that
all future performances
are based on a musical
text that is as reliable
as can
be.
The
work depicts the course
of the river Vltava,
beginning with its first
two sources, the cold and
warm Vltava, and the
confluence of the two
streams that join to form
a single river; then the
course of the Vltava
through forests and
meadows, and through open
countryside where a
peasant wedding is being
celebrated; water-sprites
dance by the light of the
moon; on the nearby
cliffs castles, mansions
and ruins rise proudly
into the air; the Vltava
eddies in the St John's
Rapids, then flows in a
broad stream as it
continues its course
towards Prague, where the
Vysehrad appears, before
the river finally
disappears into the
distance as it flows
majestically into the
Elbe.
Vltava
(The Moldau),
Smetana's best-known and
most frequently performed
orchestral work, was
written between 19
November and 8 December
1874, at a time when
Smetana was already
completely deaf. The
world premiere took place
in Prague on 4 April
1875, but the score was
not published until
1880.

This bold and dramatic
setting of The
Star-Spangled Banner is
one for your choral

accompaniment stands
strongly on its own, but
the arrangement can be

includes an optional

additional verse for an
expanded, powerful

A sequel
to his earlier work
Sunchasers, Starchasers
by Tanner Otto is a dark,
driving piece that makes
B minor accessible to
younger players by
carefully avoiding any
extensions in the violin,
viola, and cello parts.
Its memorable themes,
reminiscent of a
nighttime adventure, are
spread across all
instruments. The middle
section becomes ethereal
with the pizzicato in the
viola, evoking an image
of twinkling stars.
Starchasers is a great
teaching piece for 3/4
time and uses low-2 and
high-2 work to reinforce
the 1-2 finger pattern
for intermediate
students. (2:05).

The Song of
the Earth, composed in
the summer of 1908, is
Mahler's best-known and
most personal work.
Reflecting drastic
changes in his life, its
immense emotional density
is very moving. Until the
very end, Mahler
continued to refine the
extremely differentiated
instrumentation, as is
evident in numerous
retouchings in the
autograph score and
engraver's model. It is
therefore all the more
regrettable that he was
neither able to perform
his Symphony in Songs
himself nor that he was
involved in its printing.
Unfortunately, in the
posthumously published
first edition of 1912 and
the subsequent editions
edited by Erwin Ratz and
Karl Heinz Fussl, many
questions remained
unanswered, while other
were answered in a
dubious way.The edition
is the first
text-critical one of the
work on a scientifically
sound basis. It offers
not only a more reliable
musical text, but also
systematically and
lucidly prepared
information on the
sources, their
transmission and
evaluation. All editorial
decisions have been
documented in a
transparently
comprehensible manner -
in particular those
leading to new audible
results. Work-related
notes on performance
practice, which for the
first time include
Mahler's conducting
indications, offer
valuable, indispensable
interpretive aids. In
addition to the regular
five clarinet parts, the
set of parts includes two
additional parts (3rd
clarinet/Eb clarinet,
bass clarinet/3rd
clarinet in places where
the latter plays Eb
clarinet) to allow
performances with only
four clarinets.The
completely revised piano
reduction reproduces the
orchestral texture true
to the score without
losing sight of
playability. Both
Mahler's piano autograph
and the piano reduction
by Woss, which was
commissioned by the
composer himself, served
as an inspiration for
this.
