modern Pictures at an
Exhibition…. Ha
Shamayim is an original
piece for orchestra that
was inspired by
photographs taken by the
Hubble space telescope.
Each section is inspired
by one photo; the title
of each section is the
title that NASA gave to
the photograph. The words
Ha Shamayim are Hebrew
for The Heavens. They are
written in Genesis 1:1,
In the beginning God
created the heavens and
the earth. The words are
also seen in Psalm 19.
Section I: Warped Edge-On
Galaxy ESO 510-G13
The piece begins in outer
space with its glistening
stars. Glissandi are used
to depict the strange but
beautiful warp seen in
the photograph. Section
II: Galaxy Fires at
Neighboring Galaxy
Suddenly the piece erupts
as one galaxy fires blue
gas at its neighbor. They
engage in a cosmic
battle. Section III:
Youthful-looking Galaxy
May Be an Adult The
adolescent galaxy is
personified by a
humorous, gawky melody
reminiscent of teenage
boys who walk on feet
that are still too big.
Occasionally there is an
argument with an
authority figure, but the
joy of exploring the
universe quickly returns.
Section IV: Star Birth in
Galaxy M83 The
dramatic photograph looks
like a womb with veins.
The music begins on one
note, then it begins to
explore the initial
swelling and stretching.
It morphs into an
energetic fast theme,
still growing. Ultimately
it becomes glorious and
expansive, like the new
star. Section V: String
of ‘Cosmic
Pearls’ Surrounds
an Exploding Star The
first theme is a happy
circle dance inspired by
the circle of white dots
in the photograph. The
second theme is noble and
joyful. It is reminiscent
of the melody in the
famous chorus in
Haydn’s The
Creation with the words
from Psalm 19, The
heavens are telling the
glory of God. The music
then has flashbacks to
the earlier sections, and
ends in triumph. The five
sections in Ha Shamayim
are continuous with no
breaks. Difficulty Level:

Lent
& Easter Musical This new
45-minute, Easter musical
from Jack Schrader
utilizes three powerful
devices to dramatically
portray Christ's passion
and glory: well-conceived
choral music,
scintillating orchestral
accompaniment, and
passionate narrations,
with much detail drawn
from the gospels. The
story begins before the
Triumphal Entry of
Christ, and ends, by
implication, beyond his
Ascension. Chorally you
will find many poignant
and powerful moments.
Talented orchestrator,
Mark Kellner, has
provided exquisite
instrumental mosaics to
underscore and support
both choir and narration.
Yet the simple use of
piano accompaniment would
also be very satisfying.
At the most high and holy
time of the Christian
year, this musical
presentation powerfully
proclaims the truth of
the Gospel, and confronts
listener and performer
alike with the claims of
Jesus Christ, the Son of
God.

bore a crown of thorns as
Jesus was sacrificed.
From the worshipful

Joachim
Raff's Fifth Symphony
Lenore op. 177, composed
in 1872, reveals the
composer as a
representative of the
middle ground between
Neo-German aesthetics and
the symphonic tradition.
It owes its name to G. A.
Burger's ballade, which
is the programmatic basis
of the final movement.
Using this literary
model, Raff oriented
himself to the Berlioz
program symphonies and
the Liszt symphonic-poem
concept, on the one hand,
but on the other, he let
the three preceding
movements follow
traditional symphonic
form. Raff conducted the
Lenore symphony's
premiere in December 1872
in a concert by the
Furstliche Hofkapelle in
Sondershausen. The
concert went to his
satisfaction, although
the audience evidently
did not know what to make
of the work: [...] and
the symphony [...] was
played before this
faintly musical party.
Essentially for the
greater glory of God and
my edification, less for
that of the said public,
which seems to have been
rather horrified by it.
His friend Hans von Bulow
had, however, a great
pleasure in hearing the
symphony the following
year in Berlin. In her
preface, the editor Iris
Eggenschwiler provides
detailed information
about the work's genesis,
documents Raff's ideas
and intentions, and
facilitates a
comprehensive orientation
within the historical
context. Breitkopf &
Hartel is now presenting
for the first time with
this symphony an
orchestral work by Raff
in a modern Urtext
edition, thus also
continuing its
collaboration with the
Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft
.In collaboration with
the Joachim-Raff-Archiv
Lachen (CH).

composed between 1987 and

Messiaen (1908-1992) was
a French organist and
composer passionate about
Ornithology and one of
the most important
composers of his century.
Inspired by Japanese
music, he had a very
special way of composing
and his work can be
identified by its
complexity, its diatonic
aspect, its harmony with
limited transposition,
its colour and its
additive rhythms. He
composed many works
related to ornithology
and birdsong, including
the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7
volumes and the 'Treatise
on rhythm, colour and
ornithology' in 7
volumes..
