Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Two of Saint-Saens most popular works appear together in this affordable volume. First composed in a song form Danse Macabre was later rewritten as a symphonic poem. It is important to remember that risque music was considered more daring and controversial than today and audiences at its 1875 debut were resistant to its unconventional charms, but it eventually became a crowd pleaser. Havanaise is among the most challenging of violin and orchestra pieces, but a standard showpiece in the repertoire of every serious violinist. Based on the Cuban dance, Habanera, the 1887 work features a languid mood, highlighted by bursts of virtuoso activity. This volumecontains the full score for violin and orchestra of both these magnificent pieces./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Conducteur Avec Couverture Rigide. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. With his four works 'Le Rouet d'Omphale”, 'Phaéton”, 'Danse macabre” and 'La Jeunesse d'Hercule”, composed between 1872 and 1877, Camille Saint-Saëns decidedly put himself in the tradition of Hector Berlioz, who heralded a new epoch with his 'Symphonie fantastique” premiered in France 1830, as well as the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt, who established the term for this genre in Germany. During Saint-Saëns' lifetime the four 'Poèmes symphoniques” had become part of the repertoire all around the globe. They were recorded numerously - but the piece to hold its ground in the concert halls until today is 'Danse macabre” alone. The critical first editions which are currently issued as part of the 'oeuvres complètes instrumentals” afford the opportunity for new interpretations based upon reliable sources. / Date parution : 2019-09-06/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Symphonies. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Eglé was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. Our complete edition (BA 8862) is based on Rameau's autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version—which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas—but alsoreconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised. Here we present the instrumental numbers from both operas for concert performance. Based on the first scholarly-critical edition, published as part of “Opera Omnia Rameau Instrumental numbers in order of performance, but also grouped by key in the list of contents, enabling them to be combined freely into orchestral suites Published with performance material on hire/ Répertoire / Orchestre

in Full Score. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Considered throughout much of his career as the preeminent French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote music that embodies a characteristic French concern for clarity and order, together with his own assured mastery of the composer's craft. These qualities are evident in Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3, widely regarded as the composer's major orchestral work, and one of the very few to incorporated the organ as a featured instrument. Saint-Saëns wrote this symphony during the period of his greatest creativity — in the 1870s and '80s — at which time he also produced such important works as the opera Samson et Dalila, Le Carnaval des animaux, the Piano Concerto No. 4, and the Violin Concerto No. 3. Deeply moving and majestic, the 'Organ' Symphony bears all the hallmarks of Saint-Saëns' fluent mastery of orchestral composition. It is reprinted here form an authoritative full-score edition published by Durand et Schoenewerk, Paris. Reprint of the Durand et Schoenewerk, Paris, edition. A 16-minute orchestral tribute to the city of Chicago commissioned by the Serge Koussevitzky Foundation as part of the composer's residency with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and first performed in 2007.The title draws on the fact that the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 devastated large swathes of the city, leaving only a few buildings standing in the Centre. The combination of these relics alongside the stunning skyscraper architecture of the late 19th and 20th centuries is an illustration of Chicago's ongoing powers of reinvention. The tough grandeur and true grit of this modern metropolis finds parallels in Turnage's score. / Orchestre

Edizione critica a cura di Gabriele Dotto e Roger Parker (Vol. 1: XLIV, Vol. 2: VIII). Par DONIZETTI GAETANO. Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, written to a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, was first performed at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples on 26 September 1835. It has remained in the repertory without interruption as one of Donizetti’s most popular operas throughout its nearly 200-year history. The edition proposes as the principal text a version of the opera that, for the most part, is as near as possible to that given at the premiere in Naples. However, one of the important new features of the edition is that it includes several fully orchestrated passages that, for unknown reasons, were cancelled very close to the time of the first performance. It also features in the third-act mad scene an obbligato part for the glass harmonica, an instrument that Donizetti had chosen for this extraordinary scene, and drafted in his autograph score, but was then constrained to substitute with a solo flute when the glass harmonica player got into contractual difficulties with the theatre. While the glass harmonica part was considered a mere “musicological curiosity” some decades ago, the critical edition now convincingly argues for its legitimate restoration as part of the composer’s preferred concept. The Sources section of the edition includes a detailed examination of all contemporary sources for the opera. The composer’s autograph score is of course the most important of these, but also of great value is the first printed vocal score of the opera, which in some numbers has a piano reduction prepared by the composer and contains many vocal variants (all reported in the score) that will be a great value to performers. There are also a number of early manuscript copies of the full score, several of which are valuable in outlining the first interpretations of Donizetti’s music. The critical edition restores the original keys, thus maintaining Donizetti’s overall harmonic design, but discusses transpositions that later entered the performing and editorial tradition of the opera. Three transposed pieces – which may have had Donizetti’s approval – will be made available available in the material for hire to theatres. / Date parution : 2022-03-05/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par VINE CARL. Carl Vine’s Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Its composer describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent Piano Trio The Village) ‘evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible, creating a series of fleeting glimpses – what Prokofiev called visions fugitives – abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.’ / Scores / Répertoire / Orchestre

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented...(+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'I can?t remember when another work made a more lively, beautiful impression on me? ? this is what a very enthusiastic Felix Mendelssohn wrote to Niels Gade in January 1843. On March 2nd he premiered Gade?s C minor Symphony at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. On 26 October of the same year the 26 year old Danish composer conducted the second performance himself and in the following year he was engaged as co-conducter of the Gewandhaus concerts.
His first symphony, however, was to remain Gade?s greatest success: unique are its colourful instrumentation, atmospheric melodies and the characteristic sound world which we know as Nordic.
This volume presents Gade?s opus 5 as volume I.1 of the Complete Edition ?Niels W. Gade / Works?, edited by Finn Egeland Hansen. The volume also contains a preface by Inger Sørensen as well as a separate discussion of the musicological reception of this central work. / Date parution : 2022-03-05/ Répertoire / Orchestre

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work.
The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. The edition presents numerous new findings about the genesis of both works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Par JOSEF STOIBER FRANZ. This edition clarifies a performance aspect of Haydn’s Symphony in G major that has long been misunderstood: in m. 1 of the second movement (Largo) the viola, violoncello and several wind instrument parts are marked “solo”, indicating that they play important motifs or themes and ought to stand out. Contrary to other editions, the “solo” marking in the violoncello should not be construed as indicating a solo instrument with the remaining cellos doubling the basses. Rather, the cellos should play as a section so as to stand out all the more clearly. Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in large-scalechoral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn ”. Par RHEINBERGER JOSEF GABRIEL. Rheinberger's concert overtures are completely beholden to the tradition of the genre established at least since the 1820s. The spread of this genre was favored in equal measure by the growth of bourgeois musical culture and the overwhelming model of Beethoven's nine symphonies, which sowed a certain perplexity and discouragement among composers of the next generation and led them to turn increasingly to the smaller single-movement genre in their orchestral music. Soon a generic distinction arose between two types of overture. One was the autonomous overture, whose character results from its specific introductory function. Rheinberger's Academic Overture follows in thissame line of tradition. The other type was the overture with subject-matter, in which the romantic inclination to recreate extra-musical material in music found an expecially fruitful field of exploration. Having originated as the opening item of an opera or play, the overture had, after all, long been accustomed to accommodating the contents of the work that followed. The concert overture on an extra-musical subject is in turn associated in particular with the works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Rheinberger too, closely modeled his opp. 11 and 110 on Mendelssohn's overtures./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Symphonic Fragment for Orchestra. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Emotional depth and riveting virtuosity - these elements are what characterise many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with the musical folklore and poetry of his home country has never been severed.
This 'Symphonic Fragment', premiered by Mariss Jansons with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, refers to the life of Beethoven and the first major existential crisis of the then 31-year-old composer from Vienna. Even if Shchedrin fails to include explicit quotations, suggestions of Beethoven's 'Eroica' can well be found. The study score on sale now allows one to become thoroughly acquainted with Shchedrin's masterly skills as a composer and his virtuoso treatment of the orchestra in this work./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Shade and Darkness, lasting some 12:30 minutes, was co-commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical and the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada. The work is inspired by Turner's famous painting of the same name, subtitled 'The Night Before the Flood', although this does not imply any programmatic or even less descriptive intention, beyond the composer's admiration for the painter, and for the richness of tones and chiaroscuro, subtlety in the treatment of pictorial matter, and the dynamism and emotional force present in his work, to whose depth John Ruskin alludes: 'Nuance is in Turner, first of all, a beautiful aid to the great impression to be conveyed, but it is neither the source nor the essence of that impression; it is little more than a visible melody... preparing the feelings for the reading of the mysteries of God.' The score, generous in expressive contrasts, explores the ductility and richness of possibilities of the strings, with a very diversified use of textures, densities and colours. The formal arrangement describes a wide ternary arc, consisting of two slow and often static sections - not without ominous foreboding - and a more lively central part, punctuated by occasional turbulence and dazzling flashes of timbre, culminating in a powerful climactic process. In the final bars the four voices of the classical quartet fleetingly emerge, as a tribute to Günter Pichler, founder and member of the Alban Berg Quartet, to whom the score is dedicated, and who conducted the premiere of the work in front of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España on 24 and 25 June 2014 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and in the Patio de los Mármoles del Hospital Real in Granada. / Date parution : 2022-03-15/ Répertoire / Petit Orchestre

Rameau's 'Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour? was long considered second-rate because its première was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as 'Zaïs?, 'Zoroastre? and 'Les Boréades?. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from 'Aruéris?, a scoring found nowhere else in his oeuvre. For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of 'Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour? presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Académie Royale de Musique in 1748.- Milestone of French Baroque opera in performance practice orientated vocal score- With a brief foreword (Fr/Eng) containing salient information on the genesis of the work, the synopsis and the edition / Orchestre

Couverture Rigide. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. For his Paris 'Cythère assiégée?, Gluck drew on his eponymous opéra comique from 1759, transforming it into an opéra-ballet. The libretto which was expanded by Charles Simon Favart was adapted: Gluck added recitative passages, reworked individual sections and also added his own compositions, modifying them in parts. By March 1775, the compositional work had progressed sufficiently for Gluck to leave behind a copy of the score as he departed from Paris. However, he was unable to supervise rehearsals or be present at the premiere (1 August 1775) or any of the subsequent 21 performances. Due to these particular circumstances, three versions of the work are to be distinguished: the original version, the performed version and the printed version.
This edition of 'Cythère assiégée? contains the original version of the main part and is printed here for the first time. The reconstruction which was necessary in order to determine the original form of this opera draws on all orchestral parts, the printed score and with regard to a large gap in Act III, pages were taken from the score copy. The four-part appendix includes the changes made to this score copy, sections that deviate from the printed score as well as the final version of Act III, also from the printed score. The last part of the appendix also presents a Divertissement in six movements by Berton, which is only available as a rare contemporary set of printed parts.
The Foreword offers detailed information regarding the work's genesis, subject matter, preparations for performance and print, premiere, reception, and this edition. Selected pages from significant musical sources, the libretto of the premiere performance, and images illuminating the performance context, have been added as facsimiles./ Répertoire / Conducteur
