Look no
further for the perfect
piece to introduce your
students to 6/8 meter!
This cool-sounding,
minor-keyed jig uses only
three basic 6/8 rhythms
to give your students the
confidence they need to
navigate a too-often
neglected time signature.
Pieces of Eight by
Richard Meyer gives every
section a turn at the fun
and catchy melody while
the repeated patterns in
the accompaniments will
reinforce students'
reading of the new
rhythms. Destined to
become the go-to piece
for teaching 6/8 to the
young orchestra! (1:35)

Ravel's
multi-layered homage in
Breitkopf UrtextIn his
homage Le Tombeau de
Couperin, Ravel is less
specifically interested
in Couperin than in
French music of the late
18th century. In his
preface, editor
Jean-Francois Monnard
explains how Ravel paid a
moving and intensely
personal tribute to the
events of World War I
with his multi-layered
work. The orchestral
version goes back to the
original, eponymous piano
suite (1914-17). Then, in
1919, the composer
selected four pieces from
this source, orchestrated
them with all of his
grace and artistry; the
result provides a
charming contrast to the
pseudo-Baroque musical
idiom, and places the
pieces in a new and
effective sequence. The
work quickly gained great
popularity immediately
after the concertant
world premiere, when the
three dance movements of
the orchestral suite were
included in a ballet
production.The
underpinnings of
Monnard's edition are
provided by the most
important sources. The
preface features a great
deal of information on
the interpretation and
performance history of
the work. This is the
fifth major Ravel work
now available in print
from Breitkopf
Urtext.

The new
scholarly-critical
edition of the score of
Rameau’s
“ballet
hroïque†Les
Indes galantes finally
clears up its convoluted
source history. At the
first performance, on 23
August 1735, it consisted
of a prologue and three
acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les
Incas du Prou and Les
Fleurs. But Les Fleurs
already proved
controversial in the
early performances, and
from 11 September of that
same year it was given a
wholly new form. For the
revival on 10 March 1736
Rameau and Fuzelier added
an entirely new act Les
Sauvages, and in the
years that followed, the
“ballet
hroïque†was
presented either complete
(1743, 1751 and 1761) or
abridged with a prologue,
Les Incas du Prou and Les
Sauvages
(1751–73).
With regard to the
instrumental movements
(dances and descriptive
pieces), the present
publication is based on
the complete edition
Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR)
volumes IV/2 and IV/7
edited by Sylvie Bouissou
which are currently in
preparation. It includes
not only the orchestral
pieces in the version
deemed valid by Rameau in
1736 (with version 2 of
Les Fleurs and Les
Sauvages), but also those
from the first version of
Les Fleurs (1735) as well
as its 1743 and 1773
revisions. Performers are
thus given a complete
selection of all the
orchestral numbers from
one of Rameau’s
central stage works for
use also in concert
performance.

The two
string quartets by
Camille Saint-Saens
appear here in one volume
for the first time. The
String Quartet No. 1 in E
Minor op. 112 (1899)
numbers among the
composer's most
successful pieces and is
emblematic of the genre
in the French repertoire.
Here Saint-Saens displays
his fully developed
mastery and presents the
wealth of his inspiration
and musical prowess. Only
three years before his
death, he surprisingly
composed the String
Quartet No. 2 in G major
op. 153 (1918) which,
with its classicistic
stance, represents a
homage to the masters of
the late eighteenth
century Viennese
School.
In
addition to the first
critical edition of the
two string quartets, this
second volume of
theOeuvres instrumentales

Saint-Saens includes the
first version of the
final movementInterlude
et Finalfrom the second
string quartet, the
fragmentary beginning of
an early work for string
quartet as well as the
previously unknown and
unpublished Adagio from
Symphony No. 2 in A Minor
op. 55 for string
quintet. An extensive

historical performance
and reception histories
of all these pieces; the
