from transformations of
the carol melody, which
only appears with any

a dream like passage

Alas! Babylon’s
Final Sunset is
another installment in my
series of works that
musically comment on the
biblical books of Daniel
and Revelation. The
principal source of
inspiration for this
works comes from the 18th
chapter of the book of
Revelation. This chapter
states that the career of
Babylon the Great is
finally coming to an end.
The music begins with a
mysterious pianissimo
tremolo accompanied by
tam-tam and bass drum.
The initial flourishes in
the oboes and English
horn serve as the
principal motive of
warning. As the music
continues, there are
varying degrees of
agitation among the
strings and woodwinds.
Throughout the work there
are rhythmic motives in
the brass, percussion,
and various woodwind
instruments that sing and
speak Babylon is Fallen
in triple meter. As the
tutti ensemble arrives at
a climax, the orchestral
texture becomes thinner
and slightly transparent.
As the music continues,
the opening motive
returns in the oboes,
however the counterpoint
produces a series of solo
laments. These passages
are intended to provide
picturesque images of
these words: And the
voice of harpers, and
musicians, and of pipers,
and trumpeters, shall be
heard no more at all in
thee; and no craftsman,
of whatsoever craft he
be, shall be found any
more in thee; and the
sound of a millstone
shall be heard no more at
all in thee; And the
light of a candle shall
shine no more at all in
thee. and the voice of
the bridegroom and of the
bride shall be heard no
more at all in thee: for
thy merchants were the
great men of the earth;
for by thy sorceries were
all nations deceived. And
in her was found the
blood of prophets, and of
saints, and of all that
were slain upon the
earth. Rev. 18:22-24 The
following passages
musically comment on the
historical career of
Babylon with a sense of
her impending
destruction. The series
of laments transforms
into the more emphatic
rhythmic motive Babylon
is Fallen. The orchestral
texture begins to become
more condense, once
again, with the initial
flourishes of, but with
notable variations.
Finally, the celesta,
harp, oboes, English
horn, and strings sing
profundities that are
finally transformed into
a minor mode tonality
that fades away with the
ringing of the tam-tam.
Babylon has finally seen
her last sunset.

Ravel
needed only two weeks of
intensive concentration
to orchestrate his piano
suite Valses nobles et

given its premiere
performance in March
1911. Consisting of seven
waltzes and one epilogue,
the work stamped Ravel as
a creative personality
whose masterpiece
breathed an unbelievably
new kind of musicality

poetry. Let us not forget
that this was twelve
years before La Valse,
with which it shares a
number of similarities.
The new edition of the

A Grateful Tail
- Movement by Movement
Siriusly, Dog Star
Sirius, the brightest
star in the night sky,
has been used by
travelers and navigators
for thousands of years as
a guiding star and so it
is here as the opening
movement for the
symphony. Sirius, the
cornerstone to the
constellation Canis
Maggiore or Big Dog sits
at the foot of Orion, the
hunter, leading the way.
Highly cinematic, the
movement evokes both a
musical and visual sense
of the mythological and
mysterious elements of
Sirius and its Dog
Godstar secrets. From the
clarion call of the
opening, Sirius theme,
the sound is buoyant and
frisky emulating the
nature of doggy playtime.
Puppy pleasures abound as
a doggy four-step, my
turn on the traditional
American two-step dance,
is introduced. The
movement transforms into
an actual orchestrated
frolic of small, large
and medium dog barks
beginning with the winds
(smaller dogs) and
ultimately, the big dog,
brass. The movement
climaxes with the coda
or, Dog Park, where the
winds and the brass bark
and play together over
the, doggy ostinato
four-step rhythm,
culminating with the
final call of the Sirius
theme. Let Sleeping Dogs
Lie, Peacefully It's all
in a dog's day and life.
Tranquility presides over
this supremely gentle,
intermezzo-like movement.
After a day of play,
every dog needs rest. Let
Sleeping Dogs Lie, is a
lyrical andante inspired
by the profound serenity
and beauty of a dog at
rest. The Last Will and
Testament of Silverdene
Emblem O'Neill Based on a
powerful piece of prose
written by the American
playwright, Eugene
O'Neill this text was
intended as a consolation
piece for Carlotta, his
wife, who had become
grief-stricken over the
loss of their beloved
dog, the Dalmatian known
as Blemie.Written for a
singing actor who
personifies the role of
Blemie, a dog at the end
of his life, the movement
plays like a one act,
musical drama as we
follow Blemie through a
wonderfully
three-dimensional,
emotional and
psychological journey
writing his Last Will and
Testament, for those who
have loved him. Wagging
the Tail: Ossia Fido's
Lament A life-affirming
rumba/samba using
Blemie's final words from
O'Neill's text, this
final movement employs
the most unique American
musical invention, the
gospel choir. In order to
make the dances come
alive, this movement also
calls upon the colors of
a rhythm section.
Creating the spirit of an
Irish Funeral, the
movement is a joyful and
revival-like celebration
of a dog's life as its
spirit lives on forever
in the hearts and minds
of dog lovers everywhere.

Meine
eigene neue
Orchesterkomposition hat
den Titel ,,SCHREIBEN.
Die praktische Aktion des
Schreibens, als
mechanisches Einwirken
per Hand, Stift, Pinsel,
auf eine Flache (Papier,
Pergament, Stein etc.),
ausgelost und gesteuert
von einem kommunikativen
Bedurfnis und, bei aller
Spontaneitat, beherrscht
durch die Regeln von
Schrift und Sprache, ist
fur mich einer der
geheimnisvollsten
Vorgange im
zwischenmenschlichen
Alltag, bei dem
menschlicher Geist und
tote Materie einander
begegnen: Gedanken bzw.
Gedachtes werden auf
einer Flache - Papier,
Pergament, Stein -
festgehalten, ihr
sozusagen anvertraut. Und
auf diesem Umweg uber
Sprache, Schrift und
Gravur begegnen sie dem
Geist des lesenden oder
entziffernden
Mitmenschen. Als
Komponist aber frage ich:
gibt es auch einen
anderen
Kausalitatszusammenhang,
gibt es z. B. ein
,,autonomes Schreiben,
eine sinn-freie
Zeichengebung, durch
entfesselte, losgelassene
Fortbewegung der
schreibenden Hand, wo der
Schreibende seinem
eigenen Schreiben nur
noch staunend zusieht?
Werden nicht in Japan
Bilder, auch ,,abstrakte,
geschrieben??? (In einem

eine Viertelstunde lang
sind wir dabei, horen
nicht die entstehende

wir beobachten dessen

This work
was written with a mix
between computer
technology and the more
traditional orchestra,
the piece was composed in
such a way that it would
support its own
acoustics. Lindberg
worked with amplification
of instruments and
electronically
transformed sounds thus
producing greater
possibilities to abandon
acoustic limits. In order
for the piece to be
supported by it's own
acoustics, the piece had
to be written in terms of
foreground and background
harmony, every foreground
chord would always have
it's background, a shadow
existing without it's
main chord. Another theme
to the piece is that of
textural motion as rapid
gestures and motions are
a big part of the
composer's interest.
Static repitions seemed
to limit the piece
however so they were
compensated for on
another level, so with a
repetitive rhythmic
pattern, the harmonic
material changes rapidly
or when a chain of chords
is static the rhythmic
and timbral qualities
vary frequently. Work for
orchestra commissioned by
the Finnish Broadcasting
Company.

Mic
hael Nyman's
Musique A Grande
Vitesse
(MGV)
translates as ‘high
speed music’ and
was commissioned by the
Festival de Lille for the
inauguration of the TGV
North EuropeanParis-Lille
line in 1993.
This
piece of sheet music runs
continuously, but was
conceived as an abstract,
imaginary journey; or
rather five
inter-connected journeys,
each ending with a slow,
mainly stepwise melody
which isonly heard in its
'genuine' form when the
piece reaches its
destination.
Thematic
'transformation' is a key
to MGV
as a whole. Throughout
the piece ideas -
rhythmic, melodic,
harmonic, motivic,
textural -constantly
change their identity as
they pass through
different musical
'environments'.
The opening bars
establish both a
recurrent rhythmic
principle - 9, 11, or
13-beat rhythmic cycles
heard against a regular 8
- and aharmonic process -
chord sequences (mainly
over C and E) which have
the note E in common.
(Coincidentally,
MGV
begins in C and ends in
E). A later scalic,
syncopated figure (again
first heard over C, E and
A)begins the second
section, featuring Brass,
in D flat.
The
topography of
MGV
should be experienced
without reference to
planning, description or
timetables. Its tempo
changes and unpredictable
slowings downbear no
logical relation to the
high speed of the
Paris-Lille journey,
while the temptation to
treat
MGV as a
concerto grosso, with the
Michael Nyman
band as the ripeno, was
resisted: more suitably
theband (amplified in
live performance) lays
down the tracks on which
MGV
runs.

“In
early 2006 I was
commissioned to write a
piece to be premiered in
a church. Before
beginning work on it, I
tested the acoustics
there, according to which
the compositional concept
developed. Somewhat later
I began to compose the
piece 'with the church',
so to speak. During the
process of composition,
however, the music
gradually distanced
itself from the original
spatial conditions and
developed into a piece
whose characteristics
were transformed into a
church-acoustical
structure. 'I see your
music when I hear it', a
listener once said to me.
Does one really see the
music? Can fragrances be
heard? Or can one smell
colours? This 5-part
composition is music in
which the tones move in
space on different
levels, even when they
are sometimes very quiet
and slow; they are clear
and transparent even when
they are apparently
dense, complicated and
energetic.â€

This
beautiful folk melody
will capture the hearts
of students and
audiences. Originally
scored for large
orchestra, this string
arrangement captures the
essential qualities often
heard in the English
style of chamber music
for strings from the late
nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries.
Holst's melody, with its
simple pentatonic
folksong theme, receives
the kind of mystical
transformation we often
associate with British
composers' treatments of
their indigenous
wellspring---the
folksong. All sections
share in the melodic
themes while passages for
a quartet of soloists add
textural interest. This
title is available in
MakeMusic Cloud.
