Leoš
Janácek’s
symphonic fragment Dunaj
(The Danube) dates from
the period of the
composition of
“Katya
Kabanovaâ€. The
composer was not
concerned with a
musical-picturesque
description of a river
landscape, but with the
mythical link between
women’s destinies
and
water.
“Pale
green waves of the
Danube! There are so many
of you, and one followed
by another. You remain
interlocked in a
continuous flow. You
surprise yourselves where
you ended up – on
the Czech shores! Look
back downstream and you
will have an impression
of what you have left
behind in your haste. It
pleases you here. Here I
will rest with my
symphony.†Thus
Leoš Janácek
described the idea behind
the composition project
which occupied him in
1923/24. However, after
further work, it remained
incomplete in 1926. His
“symphonyâ€
entitled Dunaj has
survived as a
continuously-notated,
four-movement bundle of
sketches in score form.
It is one of the works
which occupied him until
his death. The scholarly
reconstruction by the two
Brno composers Miloš
Štedron and Leoš
Faltus closely follows
the original
manuscript.
A
whole conglomeration of
motifs stands behind the
incomplete work. What at
first seems like a
counterpart to
Smetana’s Vltava,
in fact doesn’t
turn out to be a musical
depiction of the Danube.
On the contrary, the
fateful link between the
destiny of women, water
and death permeates the
range of motifs found in
the work. It seems to be
no coincidence that
Janácek, whilst
working on the opera
Katya Kabanova, in which
the Volga, as the river
bringing death plays an
almost mythical role,
planned a Danube
symphony, and that its
content was linked with
the destiny of women: in
the sketches, two poems
were found which may have
provided the stimulus for
several movements of the
symphony. He copied a
poem by Pavla
Kriciková into the
second movement, in which
a girl remarks that
whilst bathing in a pond,
she was observed by a
man. Filled with shame,
the young naked woman
jumps into the water and
drowns. The outer
movements likewise draw
on the poem
“Lola†by the
Czech writer Sonja
Špálová,
published under the
pseudonym Alexander
Insarov. This is about a
prostitute who asks for
her heart’s
desire: she is given a
palace, but then goes on
a long search for it and
is finally no longer
wanted by anyone. She
suffers, feels cold and
just wants a warm fire.
Janácek adds his
remark “she jumps
into the Danube†to
the inconclusive
ending.
To these
tangible literary models
is added Adolf
Veselý’s verbal
account which reports
that the composer wanted
to portray “in the
Danube, the female sex
with all its passions and
driving forcesâ€.
The third movement is
said to characterise the
city of Vienna in the
form of a
woman.
It is
evident that in his
composition, Janácek
was not striving for a
simple, natural lyricism.
The River Danube is
masculine in the Slavic
language –
“ten Dunajâ€
– and assumes an
almost mythical
significance in the
national character,
indeed often also a role
bringing death. The four
movements are motivically
conceived. Elements of
sound painting, small
wave-like figures in the
first movement, motoric,
driving movements in the
third are obvious
evocations of water. And
the content and the
literary level are easy
to discover. The
“tremolo of the
four timpaniâ€,
which was amongst
Janácek’s first
inspirations, appears in
the second movement. It
is not difficult to
retrace in it the fate of
the drowning bather. The
oboe enters lamentoso
towards the end of the
movement over timpani
playing tremolo, its
descending figure is
taken over by the flute,
then upper strings and
intensified considerably.
The motif of drowning
– Lola’s
despair – returns
again in the fourth
movement in the clarinet,
before the work ends
abruptly and
dramatically.
One
special effect is the use
of a soprano voice in the
motor-driven third
movement. The singer
vocalises mainly in
parallel with the solo
oboe, but also in
dialogue with other parts
such as the viola
d’amore, which
Janácek used in
several late works as a
sort of “voice of
loveâ€.

As
part of the year 2023,
dedicated to Swiss
composers, the Swiss Wind
Band Association has
commissioned Gauthier
Dupertuis to write a new
orchestration of the
Overture in E-flat major
by Stephan Jaeggi.
Indeed, an update of the
instrumentation was
necessary for the
interpretation of this
work with modern
orchestras. Therefore,
the orchestration that
Gauthier Dupertuis
proposes and which he
wanted to be faithful to
the original while
meeting current
standards, will allow
todayÂ’s orchestras to
perform this piece of
classical-romantic
inspiration. Stephan
Jaeggi was a Swiss
composer and conductor
who was born into a large
family in Fulenbach
(Canton of Solothurn) in
1903. He began playing
the clarinet at the age
of 13, then studied music
at the Basel Conservatory
and attended his military
training with the Swiss
Army Band. Thereafter, he
became the conductor of
several wind orchestras.
In this role, and also
that of a composer,
Stephan Jaeggi went on to
achieve great success.
His early death in 1957
put a premature end to
Stephan Jaeggi's creative
life. All the more reason
why his work lives on
with unbroken power to
this day.

Of all his
symphonies, Mahler gave
the Fourth, his favorite
and problem child, his
most particular
attention. The Heavenly
Life, a humoresque
composed in 1892 for
soprano and piano, which
he already wanted to use
in the final movement of
the Third Symphony under
the title What the Child
Tells Me, ultimately
became the nucleus and
final movement of the
Fourth. Even after
publication in 1901,
Mahler kept repeatedly
refining the
orchestration. His maxim
not without my retouching
led to a whole series of
revised reprints. It is
probably no coincidence
that Mahler performed
especially the Fourth
Symphony in his last two
New York concerts in
February 1911, using this
opportunity to review
once again the score and
parts. This performance
material with his
retouching served as the
main source for the new
edition. Furthermore,
included for the first
time were corrections and
annotations in
conjunction with
performances of the
Fourth, which Mahler
entered into the scores
of conductors such as
Mengelberg and
Wickenhauser. PB 5664 has

Fuego Fatuo has
an interesting history.
Manuel De Falla
(1876-1946), often
regarded as the greatest
Spanish composer of the
20th century, wanted to
write an opera based
around themes from
Chopin, whomhe greatly
admired. The stage work
was never finished;
however, several attempts
have been made to arrange
the work for orchestra,
most successfully by the
Catalan conductor
Antoni
Ros-Marba.
Des
pite its history,this
orchestral suite is far
from being a mere
mish-mash of Chopin
melodies; it is more of a
meditation on Chopin's
work in general, with the
focus on the harmonic and
textural elements which
De Falla drew
from his work.It forms a
fascinating insight into
the mind of a great
musician.

Cape
Horn is situated at the
southern point of South
America, on the Chilean
island “Isla
Hornosâ€. For
centuries, sailing around
thehorn was said to be
one of he most dangerous
passages for ships that
wanted to sail from the
Atlantic Ocean westwards
to the PacificOcean.
Tradition has it that Sir
Francis Drake discovered
Cape Horn in 1578 and the
Dutch voyager Willem
Cornelisz Schouten was
the first to round it in
1616. It was the latter
who named the promontory
after his Dutch hometown
Hoorn. It is estimated
that over 800 ships and
10,000 men in total sank
into the icy waters
during attempts to
circumnavigate the cape.
The work Cape Horn
– a solo for Horn
and concert band –
attempts to reflect the
beauty, but also the
peril of this region. It
is a matter of great
importance to thecomposer
Otto M. Schwarz to write
new repertoire in the
wind band solo works
genre. The tonal language
of his main genre
– film music
– is as
unmistakable as the
experimental parts and
catchy tunes.

Composer's
Notes: “In writing
this work I wanted to
compose something which
was both timeless and
contemporary, both sacred
and secular. The title
(Sacred Songs) is
therefore slightly
misleading as the three
poems are concerned with
political repression in
Latin America and are
deliberately coupled with
traditional religious
texts to emphasise a
deeper solidarity with
the poor of that
sub-continent. It was my
interest in Liberation
Theology which made me
combine the poems of the
Mothers of the Plaza de
Mayo in Argentina with
the texts of the Latin
mass in Búsqueda (an
earlier music-theatre
work) and has now led me
to attempt a similar
synthesis of ideas in
Cantos Sagrados. The
voices in Ariel Dorfman's
poems belong to those who
suffer a particular type
of political repression:
the 'disappearance' of
political prisoners. Ana
Maria Mendoza's poem
about the Virgin of
Guadeloupe tackles the
same problem by asking a
more fundamental cultural
and historical
question.â€.

Note: Lachrimae is a
direct reference to John
Dowland's work of the
same name. I had played
that that piece in school
on guitar and decided
that I wanted to base
something on it. Dowland
himself adapted the piece
several times into
different versions and
there's also a Benjamin
Britten composition based
on the same piece of
music, so that was part
of my inspiration. When I
wrote my work I
waslistening to string
orchestra music and I
think Bartok's
Divertimento is the
pinnacle of string
writing. So the piece is
kind of equally inspired
by Dowland's Rennaissance
Lachrimae and by Bartok's
Divertimento.

'LIST
ENING EARTH' is a
symphonic drama, a one-
movement composition in
four parts based on the
work by two writers,
Joseph Addison
(1672-1719) and W.H.Auden
(1907-1973). Joseph
Addison is not
particularly well known;
he was English, a
classical scholar,
essayist, poet and
politician, but one of
his hymns was used by
Benjamin Britten. in his
setting of a Thomas
Tallis canon. The hymn
is singularly beautiful
and being a composer
always inspired by
extramusical stimuli such
as poems, nature,
paintings, I was
immediately convinced
when I carne across the
Addison hymn, that here
was exactly what I wanted
to use as my major source
of inspiration for this
piece, commissioned by
and written for The
Berlin Philharmonic.
I don't refer to the
hymn in its entirety, but
have chosen the following
3 excerpts, all acting as
mottos for the first
three sections of the
piece, thus turning the
piece into a
straightforward tonepoem
in the classical.

Herrmann
wanted to write a musical

Hitchcok, so choose
motifs from the movie The
Trouble With Harry, one
of Hitchcock's more
personal and humorous
films. This
single-movement work for
Orchestra employs some of
the more familiar
elements of Herrmann's
compositional style:
short musical phrases
repeated and then
repeated again in other
positions, sharp use of
dynamics among them. From
the first note, the
creepiness begins.Bernard
Herrmann was among the
very greatest of all
composers of music for
cinema and there are many
who avow that he was the
greatest of all. A very
short list of the films
for which this
award-winning
composercreated

Citizen Kane, The Man Who

Jason and Argonauts,
Fahrenheit 451, Obsession
and Taxi Driver. He had a
long and fertile
association with Alfred
Hitchcock during the most
productive period of
Hitchcock's career and
with Orson Welles from

Theatre on the Air. In
addition to his

Herrmann wrote concert

282-285 or not? To this
day, it has been
impossible to ascertain
exactly how Mozart wanted
to end his Overture for a

Bastiaan Blomhert's
source-critical new
edition, which makes use
for the first time of
authentic performance
