Robbins Landon referred to these works as the 'English Symphonies” as they are stylistically closely linked to 'the London Bach”, Johann Christian Bach. In a letter Haydn wrote to his Paris publisher Charles-Georges Boyer in 1783, he described the works as 'Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend”, meaning they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Richer than ever – Rameau’s “Zoroastre” in the version of 1756. Opera in five acts. Rameau’s revised version of his opera “Zoroastre”, which could be heard and seen between 20 January 1756 and 26 March 1757 at the Académie royale de musique, was favourably received. Also from today’s point of view the work profits dramaturgically from many of the changes and seems altogether richer and more tightly woven than the original of 1749. The subject matter of the libretto, derived from Ancient Persian sources, is timeless: the struggle between good and bad. The good is embodied by the religious reformer Zoroastre, a representative of the supreme light being Orosmade. He is opposed by the ambitious magician Abramane who serves Ariman, the spirit of the dark. The opera includes some of Rameau’s most ecstatic and spiritual musical numbers, such as the episode of sun worship in Act 3 with the sublime „Hymne à la Lumière“, which, for unknown reasons, was not integrated in the revision of 1756. It is therefore included in Appendix 3 of this Bärenreiter edition. Incidentally, with “Zoroastre” the prologue, wh ich had been customary since the beginnings of French opera in the 1670s, was abandoned. Instead Rameau was the first to introduce an overture which set the scene for the entire drama and thereby anticipated Gluck’s opera reform by many years. This piece is indeed a tone poem with allusions to Strauss (the orchestral composition Ein Heldenleben), and the theme found in Chamisso's book: Peter Schlemihl's Miraculous Story. The narration is not linear, but rather, metaphorical (in this sense, the model leans more towards Hamlet by Franz Liszt). In fact, the discourse vacillates between luxuriance (symbolising the infinite wealth of Chamisso's hero) and rarefaction, aridity (the growing psychological vacuum of this same hero). Though the language is modern, there are several references in this homage to Strauss (the use of the horns, for example) and above all, a dramaturgy based on contrast.
Strauss is a composer who has always obsessed me, in particular for his orchestral hedonism. He greatly influenced Edgar Varèse, who, for me, is a constant reference. It is this composer's sonic opulence, that was, in part, my inspiration for Schlemihl./ Répertoire / Orchestre

In 2009, to mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the British Library and Bärenreiter joined forces and made the autograph score of the “Messiah” available to the public in a meticulously reproduced, lavishly published facsimile. The renowned Handel scholar Donald Burrows introduces the characteristics of Handel’smanuscript, describes the history of the work’s composition, and explains the differences between later versions of the “Messiah”, as reflected in the conducting scores. Gade had originally intended to unite the composition with 'Korsfarerne” (The Crusaders) (1866), and another work with Jewish-historical content in 'a type of trilogy”, however, he later abandoned his plan and 'Kalanus” remained in its singular form. Haydn's Symphony Hob. I:89 belongs to a group of symphonies composed between the 'Paris? symphonies (Hob. I:82-87) and their 'London? counterparts (Hob. I: 93-104) - the last ones he wrote before his trips to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95. The Symphony in F major is dated 1787 in the autograph score. In this work Haydn borrowed two movements from an earlier piece, possibly owing to deadline pressure. The second and fourth movements are arrangements of movements 2 and 3 from his Concerto in F major Hob. VIIh:5 for two 'lire organizzate? and orchestra. The fact that he also arranged movements from his other lire concertos suggests that he regarded them as a sort of musical quarry. This at least allowed him to recycle parts of these works after his patron had probably prohibited him from offering them commercially.This edition continues the collaboration with the Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies. Le chapitre V s'intitule : On the Wings of the Morning : the Pornography of Death. Il s'agit de cas de mort subite, de disparitions soudaines, du rapt des mâles par quelque femme-oiseau ou femme-lion - Harpies, Sphinges ou Sirènes -, créatures monstrueuses dont l'attrait est fatal. Les adorateurs de Dionysos ont souvent remarqué l'aisance et la grâce provocante de ces enjôleuses qu'un geste de brusque sauvagerie rapproche tout de même de la panthère. Pour la victime éblouie, l'envolée vers les cimes culmine en une étreinte funeste. Un battement d'ailes, une jonchée d'ossements, tel est le tableau de la pornographie de la mort. On the wings of the morning est une allusion aux incertitudes du temps présent, à ses Furies modernes. Ce concerto pour piano ne recherche pas l'effet pittoresque et n'a pas de caractère illustratif. L'évocation des bacchantes de l'Hadès est simplement l'occasion d'une fantasmagorie du demi-jour où les ombres jouent sur les surfaces tendues. L'orchestre se comporte comme une masse tumultueuse dont la dynamique conflictuelle est dominante. L'association des pupitres de clarinettes et de trombones, conçue comme un matériau paradoxal, donne sa tonalité d'ensemble à l'oeuvre : amères présences, prosaïsme lugubre, voûtes sans écho. Le temps n'est plus qu'un écheveau de moments transitoires. Le pianiste se trouve dans la situation du forçat des Palmiers Sauvages de Faulkner, condamné à pagayer sur le Mississippi en crue. Le Déluge, les apparitions démoniaques, le vent, le froid font son ordinaire. Sa tâche est de coudoyer les abîmes. L'esprit de ce piano n'est ni constructiviste ni combinatoire. C'est un esprit de survie, concentré sur l'intensification du matériau et la plasticité du mouvement. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Lorsque Frank Madlener m'a proposé le projet de confronter un orchestre symphonique avec la lutherie électronique, j'ai tout de suite accepté ce défi sachant qu'il me faudrait rapidement fixer des contraintes très fortes, tant le champ des possibles, qu'il soit instrumental ou électroacoustique, était infini. Mon idée initiale était d'utiliser pour la première fois des transformations en temps réel, afin d'assouplir les rapports de verticalité et d'utiliser l'informatique comme un moyen d'orchestration. Celle de Frank était de se demander comment l'électronique pouvait créer l'illusion d'un orchestre déployé dans l'espace, entourant le public, et créant des configurations acoustiques inouïes. Afin de travailler sur cette problématique, j'ai décidé d'utiliser une formation orchestrale défective, ou certains instruments (notamment ceux qui étaient les moins localisables à l'écoute, comme le basson ou le cor) seraient absents et 'remplacés' dans la texture générale par l'ordinateur.
Qui dit 'illusion' dit aussi 'surprise', et j'avais besoin, pour élaborer la forme de l'oeuvre, de prendre comme point de départ une source qui ait à la fois une grande diversité interne (une succession d'instants pourraient être traduits musicalement par autant de configurations acoustiques) et une cohérence. Rapidement, il m'est apparu que mes recherches étaient finalement très similaires à celles de l'immense chef espagnol Ferran Adrià, dont la cuisine joue en permanence sur le conflit entre connu et inconnu, entre référence et invention abstraite, et dont les menus sont 'composés' avec un sens de la forme absolument saisissant. Très régulièrement, je tente d'établir des liens entre la musique et les arts de la bouche (gastronomie, oenologie), par l'improvisation au piano sur des vins ou des mets, et par l'écriture (notamment d'un duo pour alto et piano, Quelques effervescences, qui s'inspire de vins pétillants du monde). Les deux univers me semblent intimement liés, dans l'immédiateté de la réception, et dans le parallélisme entre les sensations éprouvées (de nombreux musiciens font appel à des métaphores gustatives pour parler de leur travail : un accord 'épicé', une sonorité 'grasse', une orchestration 'acide'...).
Le menu que j'ai eu l'honneur de déguster en 2007 au restaurant 'El Bulli' s'articulait autour de 35 plats que j'ai utilisés chronologiquement, tant l'articulation entre le salé et le sucré, les mets marins et terriens, le végétal et l'animal était, en soi, une dramaturgie parfaite. L'illusion était présente dès le premier instant. Ainsi, 'l'olive sphérique' qui débutait ce repas jouait sur le contraste entre un objet visuellement identifiable (une olive) et son 'interprétation' surprenante (il s'agissait en fait d'une reconstruction visuelle de l'olive, mais qui n'était autre que de l'huile d'olive emprisonnée dans une fine couche gélatineuse verte : aspect et goût étaient en phase, mais la texture, elle, était inouïe). Musicalement, la traduction de ce plat était assez évidente : un impact reprenant l'explosion de cet met en bouche débute la pièce, et une texture plus continue vient évoquer le déploiement de l'huile dans la bouche.
Certains plats sont assez unitaires, d'autres contiennent en eux un parcours que j'ai fidèlement reproduit (par exemple la 'framboise au wasabi', qui se déguste en trois temps successifs). J'ai aussi mis en relation certains plats entre eux, afin de créer des 'retours' qui permettent à la structure musicale de sortir d'une logique de catalogue (par exemple, une fleur de capucine, dégustée avant les desserts, renvoie gustativement, et donc musicalement, à une amande fraîche qui, elle, est présente dans le premier quart du repas). Ce 'livre' s'achève sur la texture aérienne d'un papier effervescent au cassis qui conclut de façon suspensive une pièce particulièrement animée, où les masses sonores s'opposent de façon frontale, et viennent occuper tout l'espace de la salle de concert.
Commande de l'Orchestre de Paris et de l'Ircam, le Livre des illusions (hommage à Ferran Adrià) est dédié à Marie Linden et Grégoire Biasini. Cette oeuvre a été créée à la salle Pleyel le 11 juin 2009 sous la direction de Jean Deroyer.

In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets.
