Symphony,
symphonic poem, fantasy,
or something else
entirely different? For a
long time while working
on the Sixth Symphony,
Sibelius was not certain
what his new orchestral
work was now about to
become or what to call
it. He had to interrupt
work on the symphony time
and again during the
Finnish civil war and
because of financial
difficulties that forced
him to earn a living with
little things. So, it is
not surprising that many
small ideas for other
works repeatedly
culminated in the Sixth.
In a letter to a friend,
he describes his early
ideas for the work: The
6th symphony is wild and
turbulent in character.
Gloomy with pastoral
contrasts. Probably in 4
movements with a
conclusion growing into a
dark orchestral shower in
which the main theme
drowns. The editor Kai
Lindberg now presents the
definitive version within
the context of the
Sibelius Complete
Edition.

The
present volume contains
five orchestral works,
which Sibelius composed
in 1904-1910: Die Dryade
(Op. 45 No. 1), Musik zu
einer Szene [Op. 45 No.
2/1904], Tanz-Intermezzo
(Op. 45 No. 2), Pohjolas
Tochter (Op. 49), and Pan
und Echo (Op. 53a). An
early version of
Tanz-Intermezzo is
included as an appendix.
In addition, a fragment
illustrating the
unrealized plan of a
symphonic poem called
Luonnotar, which Sibelius
reworked into Pohjolas
Tochter, appears as a
facsimile. Musik zu einer
Szene is now published
for the first time.
Except for Pohjolas
Tochter, all the works
were composed for a
choreographic purpose,
(sub-)titled or referred
to as dance intermezzos,
or related to opus
45.

With the
new edition of the
G-minor Symphony, a vital
work group in Mozart's
oeuvre is now complete:
the three late symphonies
K. 543, 550 and 551, now
available in Urtext
editions. As in his new
edition of the Hafner
Symphony, Henrik Wiese
uncovers in the present
Breitkopf Urtext score
three different stages in
the genesis of the
G-minor Symphony. Mozart
initially wrote the work
without clarinets (1st
stage), and then he added
the clarinets (2nd
stage). Not until a final
stage did he change the
wind instrumentation in
the Andante (3rd stage).
Mozart thus returned to
the 1st version again
after completing the 2nd
version (with clarinets).
This advances the
importance of the 1st
version without clarinets
as Fassung letzter Hand.
A compelling insight
which sheds new light on
the famous G-minor
Symphony. Both versions
are of equal value and
can now be compared with
one another, studied and,
above all, performed for
the first time ever
thanks to the new score
and parts.Another
extremly practical aspect
that should be noted: the
orchestral parts offer
solutions for all the
problematic page turns
for the first time ever
(please see the sample
pages of OB 5542 - Violin
II.),,... the musical
text is fine. This is a
valuable improvement.

Whoever is
looking for orchestral
works in several
movements by Sibelius
before the seven
officially numbered
symphonies will run into
Kullervo op. 7, as well
as Lemminkainen op. 22.
Sibelius follows a
cyclical concept in these
four tone poems, so that
Lemminkainen, owing to
its time of origin, can
truly be labeled as his
Symphony No. Zero. The
previously unprinted
early versions, presented
in the respective volume
of the Complete Edition
for the first time, can
be dated to the year
1895/96. The first
revision was made in
1897, after the world
premiere. Only after this
premiere did Sibelius
write his First Symphony
before he again revised
the Lemminkainen scores
some of them much later
and had them
published.

Jean
Sibelius wrote his last
two tone poems
Aallottaret op. 73 and
Tapiola op. 112 as
commissions for the
United States.
Aallottaret is the
original Finnish title of
op. 73, as is found on
the autograph. Discreetly
concealed behind this
title, however, is the
title The Oceanides,
which also stems from
Sibelius, and which
Breitkopf & Hartel gladly
placed in first position
for the first edition of
1915, thus facilitating
the diffusion of the
work. The previously
unpublished early version
of Aallottaret is also
presented in the volume
of the Complete Edition;
it had been hastily
rejected shortly before
the world premiere.
Compared with this
genesis, the origin of
Tapiola , Sibelius last
great symphonic poem, is
relatively unspectacular:
though he was under
pressure to write and
publish the work,
Sibelius produced no
different versions. There
was only one printed
edition from Breitkopf
and no further revisions.

Ravel's

Breitkopf UrtextIn his
homage Le Tombeau de
Couperin, Ravel is less
specifically interested
in Couperin than in
French music of the late
18th century. In his
preface, editor
Jean-Francois Monnard
explains how Ravel paid a
moving and intensely
personal tribute to the
events of World War I
with his multi-layered
work. The orchestral
version goes back to the
original, eponymous piano
suite (1914-17). Then, in
1919, the composer
selected four pieces from
this source, orchestrated
them with all of his
grace and artistry; the
result provides a
charming contrast to the
pseudo-Baroque musical
idiom, and places the
pieces in a new and
effective sequence. The
work quickly gained great
popularity immediately
after the concertant
world premiere, when the
three dance movements of
the orchestral suite were
included in a ballet
production.The
underpinnings of
Monnard's edition are
provided by the most
important sources. The
preface features a great
deal of information on
the interpretation and
performance history of
the work. This is the

According to Rautavaara
The name of the work is a
quotation from the
libretto of my opera The
House of the Sun: . .
.like a butterfly in a
dark autumn garden. . ..
The motif to which these
words are sung is the
theme for the variations
in the first movement.
Their texture gradually
grows and becomes denser.
Following on without a
break is a slow, poetic
movement of even rhythms
and dynamics. The quick,
lively finale begins
giocoso e leggiero. But
autumn is also a time of
colour, and of death. At
the end the music thus
turns into a festive
dance con grandezza.
Maybe it bears the echo
of a sarabande to the
dying splendour of summer
- or as T.S. Eliot put
it: late roses filled
with early snow. Autumn
Gardens was commissioned
by the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra and premiered
at the London Proms in

in 1956, when Sallinen
was Aarre Merikanto's
composition student for
his second term. The work
received its premiere
performance only after a
good deal of pressure
from Prof. Merikanto's
side, and was finally
premiered in a concert by
the Sibelius Academy
Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Jussi Jalas.
The work received opus
number 1, as it was the
first publicly performed
work by Sallinen.
The composer has told
that he was inspired by a
1947 book published by
the Finnish Literary
Society (SKS) Myytillisia
kuvia (Mythical
Scenes/Images). The
second movement of the
work, Kalmanvaen
joulukirkko (The
Christmas Service of the
Dead) is based on the
stories in which the dead
rise from their graves
early in the Christmas
Day morning to attend
their own special
ceremony led by a dead
priest. The opening
movement Kulkue
(Procession) depicts the
dead in a procession
towards the church.
In 2020 Sallinen revised
the score slightly. In
his own words with very
small changes helping the
sixty years younger and
less experienced self.
The revisions mostly
concerned nuances and
dynamics, bowings and
some bridges. The
original structure,
rhythmic and harmonic
world is still the same
as they were when young
Sallinen composed the
work in 1956.

home in June 1902. Its
premiere took place on
March 21, 1903 in Berlin,
and the Polish premiere
on April 7, 1903 in Lviv.
The symphony has a
classic, four-movement
structure, but in terms
of architecture it is
much closer to symphonic
poems. It consists of the
movements: 1. Andante.
Allegro 2. Andante non
troppo 3. Vivace 4.
Allegro maestoso. ''In
terms of orchestration
and instrumentation
technique it represents
Kar owiczs early,
academic period. The
composer still used
double wind enriched with
piccolo flute, unlike in
his later orchestral
works the symphonic
poems. The orchestration
of the work indicates
that the composer was
guided by Tchaikovskys
symphonic model. Kar
owicz here still
willingly operates with
various sound blocks of
entire instrumental
groups, treating them in
a choral manner, with
tight chordal pillars''
(Leszek Polony). Before
the Polish premiere the
composer gave a
comprehensive literary
programme of the work in
the Lviv newspaper S owo
Polskie, in which he
referred to each
consecutive movement of
the Symphony. In his last
words he wrote, ''We hear
a hymn of revival, at
first quiet and sweet,
then wider and wider, and
fuller. Already the time
has come; to hear the
fanfare. Only one more
step! And although the
spirits fall again in
doubt, we hear a powerful
and solemn hymn of
rebirth.''.

Strauss
third tone poem Don Juan
was composed in spring
1888. This work is
already an impressive
demonstration of the
composer's newly acquired
confidence in mastering
the orchestral apparatus.
Already completed in the
fall, it took over a year
until its premiere in
Weimar on November 11,
1889. Breitkopf &
Hartel's new Urtext
edition assesses not only
the autograph and the
first edition, but also
for the first time the
parts used under the
composer's direction,
resulting in some
surprisingly new
readings. An extensive
preface, facsimile pages,
and a detailed critical
report round off this
authoritative Urtext
edition.
First
Urtext edition since the
first edition. Evaluation
of all available sources,
including some orchestral
parts used by Strauss. A
detailed critical report.

Thanks to
its skilful combination
of Romantic melody and
sparkling virtuosity,
KoussevitzkyÂ’s Double
Bass Concerto op. 3 has
been one of the most
popular works of its
genre since its Moscow
premiere in 1905. No
wonder, for the virtuoso
double bass player
Koussevitzky had composed
it for his very own
instrument. As early as
1906/07 a first piano
reduction was published
in Moscow, followed by a
second in 1910 in
Leipzig. However, both
contain so many mistakes
in the solo part that
there is still
uncertainty about the
correct musical text in
many passages to this
day. The double bass
player Tobias Glöckler
has therefore prepared
his Urtext edition using
several sources: as well
as the manuscript
performance material and
the piano reductions
published during the
composer's lifetime, he
has also studied
recordings with
Koussevitzky as soloist -
thereby finally producing
a
thoroughly-researchedUrte
xt edition of the
orchestral score and
piano reduction of this
classic of the double
bass literature. As with
all double bass concertos
published by Henle
Publishers, this edition
also contains the piano
reduction by Christoph
Sobanski in two keys (E
minor and F sharp minor)
for performance with solo
or orchestral tuning.

As
part of the year 2023,
dedicated to Swiss
composers, the Swiss Wind
Band Association has
commissioned Gauthier
Dupertuis to write a new
orchestration of the
Overture in E-flat major
by Stephan Jaeggi.
Indeed, an update of the
instrumentation was
necessary for the
interpretation of this
work with modern
orchestras. Therefore,
the orchestration that
Gauthier Dupertuis
proposes and which he
wanted to be faithful to
the original while
meeting current
standards, will allow
todayÂ’s orchestras to
perform this piece of
classical-romantic
inspiration. Stephan
Jaeggi was a Swiss
composer and conductor
who was born into a large
family in Fulenbach
(Canton of Solothurn) in
1903. He began playing
the clarinet at the age
of 13, then studied music
at the Basel Conservatory
and attended his military
training with the Swiss
Army Band. Thereafter, he
became the conductor of
several wind orchestras.
In this role, and also
that of a composer,
Stephan Jaeggi went on to
achieve great success.
His early death in 1957
put a premature end to
Stephan Jaeggi's creative
life. All the more reason
why his work lives on
with unbroken power to
this day.

The new
scholarly-critical
edition of the score of
Rameau’s
“ballet
hroïque†Les
Indes galantes finally
clears up its convoluted
source history. At the
first performance, on 23
August 1735, it consisted
of a prologue and three
acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les
Incas du Prou and Les
Fleurs. But Les Fleurs
already proved
controversial in the
early performances, and
from 11 September of that
same year it was given a
wholly new form. For the
revival on 10 March 1736
Rameau and Fuzelier added
an entirely new act Les
Sauvages, and in the
years that followed, the
“ballet
hroïque†was
presented either complete
(1743, 1751 and 1761) or
abridged with a prologue,
Les Incas du Prou and Les
Sauvages
(1751–73).
With regard to the
instrumental movements
(dances and descriptive
pieces), the present
publication is based on
the complete edition
Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR)
volumes IV/2 and IV/7
edited by Sylvie Bouissou
which are currently in
preparation. It includes
not only the orchestral
pieces in the version
deemed valid by Rameau in
1736 (with version 2 of
Les Fleurs and Les
Sauvages), but also those
from the first version of
Les Fleurs (1735) as well
as its 1743 and 1773
revisions. Performers are
thus given a complete
selection of all the
orchestral numbers from
one of Rameau’s
central stage works for
use also in concert
performance.

A
main work by Sibelius as
facsimile edition The
large orchestral song
Luonnotar is considered
as one of the boldest
works of Jean Sibelius.
This alone would be
reason enough to print
the autograph sources
(full score and piano
reduction) as a color
facsimile for the
Sibelius Anniversary Year
2015. In addition, the
autograph score also has
a special significance
for the transmission: it
ensured the survival of
the entire work after
World War II; the source
material for the printer
compiled by Breitkopf &
Hartel had been destroyed
in an air-raid bombing in
1943. The meticulously
elucidated volume is the
first complete facsimile
edition of an orchestral
work by Jean Sibelius - a
milestone in Sibelius
editorial history that
meaningfully supplements
the complete edition Jean
Sibelius Werke as a truly
special volume.

Richard
Strauss's last completed
tone poem is regarded as
the pinnacle of his art
of orchestration: Now
I've finally learned to
orchestrate, he himself
is once supposed to have
said about it after the
dress rehearsal. The
single-movement Alpine
symphony that we know
today ultimately evolved
- over almost 15 years -
from the original drafts
of an artist's tragedy,
titled Der Antichrist.
Eine Alpensinfonie [The
Antichrist. An Alpine
Symphony] up to the stage
of the last sketches.
With unprecedented
plasticity, the work
showcases a
(metaphysical?) mountain
hike with stops in the
forest, at the waterfall,
on the alpine pasture
and, of course, at the
summit. Apropos alpine
pastures: up to the
score's fair copy stage,
Strauss envisaged a high
and a low alphorn for the
section Auf der Alm [On
the Alpine Pasture] and
the well-known Dulioh
theme, though for various
reasons first detailed in
our new Urtext edition,
these exotic instruments
did not find their way
into the printed version.
In the new edition, the
editor, Nick Pfefferkorn,
reproduces the alphorn
passages in small print,
also adding two alphorn
parts to the performance
material, besides
evaluating the
corrections made by
Walter Seifert at
Strauss's
request.
