Conc
ert Overture (1900) is a
12-minute work for small
orchestra. Sibelius
conducted the premiere
performance in Turku,
Finland on 7 April, 1900.
The work has not been
performed since the first
years of the 20th
century. Concert Overture
has its origins in stage
work Jungfrun i tornet,
and is in a way hidden
inside of the stage
music. Conductor and
scholar Tuomas
Hannikainen discovered
the existence of the
overture during his
research in 2019. He has
edited and reconstructed
the work.

Funeral by Bernhard
Gander is a 13-minute
work for two natural

always took a coffin with
him on his travels to be
prepared for
it.

Illum
inating Journey is
composed to celebrate
Maestro Carl St. Clair's
25th Anniversary season
with Pacific Symphony.
Maestro St. Clair is one
of the few conductors who
has dedicated his time to
new music and support for
living composers. I first
encountered Maestro St.
Clair in 2004 when I was
one of the finalists for
the Young Composers
Competition. After I won
that competition, I had
an opportunity to work
with Maestro St. Clair on
the piece that he
commissioned for the
Pacific Symphony in 2005.
That's the beginning of
the journey of our
friendship. Illuminating
Journey is inspired by
Maestro St. Clair's
personality and the music
he loved. The piece is
mainly based on the pitch
material from Maestro St.
Clair's name CARL which
can be translated as C =
C, A = A, R = Re, and L =
La. That pitch material
already has the character
of Illuminating sound for
the open 5th and octave.
The piece also
incorporates some musical
references that have some
meaning for Maestro St.
Clair, such as the
hopefulness of the
melodic intervals from
West Side Story, There's
a Place for Us, composed
by Leonard Bernstein, who
was also Maestro St.
Clair's mentor.
Illuminating Journey
starts with the rhythmic
motion of the pitch C and
moves on to create a set
of pitches. The note C
functions as a center for
the endless energy of
this piece and creates a
triumphant ending. I
would personally like to
thank Maestro St. Clair
for his dedication on my
music and his friendship
throughout the past 10
years. The work with
Maestro St. Clair and the
Pacific Symphony was an
early step in my career
as a composer. I often
mentioned that I may not
be able to come this far
without that part of my
life. Thank you very
much, Maestro St. Clair
and the Pacific Symphony.
Let's celebrate our
Illuminating Journey
together.

consulted certain sources

Beethoven's pupil

thus with authentic
variants. Thanks to his
vast knowledge, the

number of errors and
contradictions in the
sources. The basic
differences with respect
to other editions chiefly
concern the articulation

Richard
Strauss's last completed
tone poem is regarded as
the pinnacle of his art
of orchestration: Now
I've finally learned to
orchestrate, he himself
is once supposed to have
said about it after the
dress rehearsal. The
single-movement Alpine
symphony that we know
today ultimately evolved
- over almost 15 years -
from the original drafts
of an artist's tragedy,
titled Der Antichrist.
Eine Alpensinfonie [The
Antichrist. An Alpine
Symphony] up to the stage
of the last sketches.
With unprecedented
plasticity, the work
showcases a
(metaphysical?) mountain
hike with stops in the
forest, at the waterfall,
on the alpine pasture
and, of course, at the
summit. Apropos alpine
pastures: up to the
score's fair copy stage,
Strauss envisaged a high
and a low alphorn for the
section Auf der Alm [On
the Alpine Pasture] and
the well-known Dulioh
theme, though for various
reasons first detailed in
our new Urtext edition,
these exotic instruments
did not find their way
into the printed version.
In the new edition, the
editor, Nick Pfefferkorn,
reproduces the alphorn
passages in small print,
also adding two alphorn
parts to the performance
material, besides
evaluating the
corrections made by
Walter Seifert at
Strauss's
request.

Despite the
numbering, the overture
Leonore No. 2 was
Beethoven's first effort
to precede his only opera
with an adequate
introduction. It had been
composed last minute and
in between the rehearsals
for the premiere of the
opera Leonore oder Der
Triumph der ehelichen
Liebe (Leonore, or The
Triumph of Marital Love)
on 20 November 1805 at
the Theater an der Wien.
This comprehensive,
programmatic work was met
with incomprehension at
first performances just
like the opera itself.
Beethoven felt compelled
to re-write Leonore
completely and presented
it under its new title
Fidelio. In 1806 he
revised the overture to
such an extent that a
symphonic sonata movement
emerged; with another
incorrect numbering,
Leonore No. 3 has gone
down in music history and
above all it has achieved
a regular place in
concert repertory. And in
order to complete the
confusion: written in
1806/07, only Overture
No. 1 is Beethoven's
chronologically last
effort to write an
overture for Leonore,
before he - many years
later - put an end to
this infinite subject
with the so-called
Fidelio overture for the
third version of the
opera. After all, thanks
to the search after a
dramaturgically
convincing beginning of
the opera, the music
world has been enriched
by four quite different
orchestra scores.The
music text of the present
score is based on Volume
11 of the Supplements to
the Complete Edition. The
performance material of
the Fidelio and Leonore
No. 3 overtures is
available in Breitkopf
Urtext editions..

Composed
during the summer and
fall of 1974, Barnes'
FIRST SYMPHONY, Op. 35
was his master's thesis
at The University of
Kansas. It was premiered
in the spring semester of
1976 by their Symphonic
Band, Robert E. Foster
conducting. The following
year, the symphony was
awarded the American
Bandmasters Ostwald
Composition prize, which
led to a second
performance (of only the
first two movements) by
the Northwestern Wind
Ensemble at the American
Bandmasters convention
with Col. Jack Cline (U.S
Marine Band) conducting.
Following this
performance, Barnes
submitted the work to
several publishers, all
of which declined on the
basis it was too long and
difficult to be
marketable. For this
reason, Barnes set the
work aside and there it
remained until 2022, when
an offer came from the
Osaka Shion Wind
Orchestra to record all
nine of
Barnes'symphonies to
help celebrate their
100th anniversary. Barnes
seized the opportunity,
engraving all four
movements, with revisions
and corrections, an
effort that took seven
days a week for two
months to complete. As a
result, after almost
fifty years, all nine of
the Barnes symphonies are
finally available for
performance.

Two
Mythical Scenes for
orchestra was completed
in 1956, when Sallinen
was Aarre Merikanto's
composition student for
his second term. The work
received its premiere
performance only after a
good deal of pressure
from Prof. Merikanto's
side, and was finally
premiered in a concert by
the Sibelius Academy
Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Jussi Jalas.
The work received opus
number 1, as it was the
first publicly performed
work by Sallinen.
The composer has told
that he was inspired by a
1947 book published by
the Finnish Literary
Society (SKS) Myytillisia
kuvia (Mythical
Scenes/Images). The
second movement of the
work, Kalmanvaen
joulukirkko (The
Christmas Service of the
Dead) is based on the
stories in which the dead
rise from their graves
early in the Christmas
Day morning to attend
their own special
ceremony led by a dead
priest. The opening
movement Kulkue
(Procession) depicts the
dead in a procession
towards the church.
In 2020 Sallinen revised
the score slightly. In
his own words with very
small changes helping the
sixty years younger and
less experienced self.
The revisions mostly
concerned nuances and
dynamics, bowings and
some bridges. The
original structure,
rhythmic and harmonic
world is still the same
as they were when young
Sallinen composed the
work in 1956.

TEMPUS
FUGIT was commissioned to
celebrate the centenary
of Finnish independence
on 6 December 2017 and it
received its first
performance in Helsinki
on that day, given by the
Finnish Radio Symphony
Orchestra.
The
composer says that
“if you translate
TEMPUS FUGIT as 'Time
Flies', you could say
that Finland has
travelled a long way
already -but 100 years is
a short time-span, and
living as a human in this
part of the world started
long ago and, we hope,
will continue
formillennia to come.
This relates to my
fascination with Bernd
Alois Zimmermann's
concept of spherical time
- that the past, the
present and the future
are continuously linked
and within reach. You can
also examine the
inter-connection of
musical time in the
earlier works of
Stockhausen such as
Kontakte and Gruppen
which had a big impact on
me as a young composer. A
translation of TEMPUS
FUGIT that I prefer is
'Time in Flight',
offering the idea that
time escapes from us but
bequeaths a tangible
residue, rather like
aplane travelling towards
the distance but leaving
a visible vapour
trail.” This
30-minute score is a
major addition to the
orchestral repertory.

A Grateful Tail
- Movement by Movement
Siriusly, Dog Star
Sirius, the brightest
star in the night sky,
has been used by
travelers and navigators
for thousands of years as
a guiding star and so it
is here as the opening
movement for the
symphony. Sirius, the
cornerstone to the
constellation Canis
Maggiore or Big Dog sits
at the foot of Orion, the
hunter, leading the way.
Highly cinematic, the
movement evokes both a
musical and visual sense
of the mythological and
mysterious elements of
Sirius and its Dog
Godstar secrets. From the
clarion call of the
opening, Sirius theme,
the sound is buoyant and
frisky emulating the
nature of doggy playtime.
Puppy pleasures abound as
a doggy four-step, my
turn on the traditional
American two-step dance,
is introduced. The
movement transforms into
an actual orchestrated
frolic of small, large
and medium dog barks
beginning with the winds
(smaller dogs) and
ultimately, the big dog,
brass. The movement
climaxes with the coda
or, Dog Park, where the
winds and the brass bark
and play together over
the, doggy ostinato
four-step rhythm,
culminating with the
final call of the Sirius
theme. Let Sleeping Dogs
Lie, Peacefully It's all
in a dog's day and life.
Tranquility presides over
this supremely gentle,
intermezzo-like movement.
After a day of play,
every dog needs rest. Let
Sleeping Dogs Lie, is a
lyrical andante inspired
by the profound serenity
and beauty of a dog at
rest. The Last Will and
Testament of Silverdene
Emblem O'Neill Based on a
powerful piece of prose
written by the American
playwright, Eugene
O'Neill this text was
intended as a consolation
piece for Carlotta, his
wife, who had become
grief-stricken over the
loss of their beloved
dog, the Dalmatian known
as Blemie.Written for a
singing actor who
personifies the role of
Blemie, a dog at the end
of his life, the movement
plays like a one act,
musical drama as we
follow Blemie through a
wonderfully
three-dimensional,
emotional and
psychological journey
writing his Last Will and
Testament, for those who
have loved him. Wagging
the Tail: Ossia Fido's
Lament A life-affirming
rumba/samba using
Blemie's final words from
O'Neill's text, this
final movement employs
the most unique American
musical invention, the
gospel choir. In order to
make the dances come
alive, this movement also
calls upon the colors of
a rhythm section.
Creating the spirit of an
Irish Funeral, the
movement is a joyful and
revival-like celebration
of a dog's life as its
spirit lives on forever
in the hearts and minds
of dog lovers everywhere.

Brahms
composed his Triumphlied
for eight-part chorus,
solo baritone and
orchestra as a direct
reaction to the victory
of the German army in the
Franco-Prussian War of
1870/71 and the
consequent founding of
the German Empire.
Similar to the German
Requiem completed shortly
before, Brahms himself
compiled the text from
the Bible, in this case
from Chapter 19 of the
Book of Revelations.
Because of the somewhat
melodramatic tone of the
composition and the
nationalistic background
to the works genesis, in
recent years the
Triumphlied has seldom
been heard in concert
halls. Unlike
overly-patriotic
occasional works such as
Richard Wagner's
Kaisermarsch, the
Triumphlied is true
Brahms and is a musically
rich composition. This
study edition takes the
musical text from the
Brahms Complete Edition
(HL 51486030), thereby
representing the highest
scholarly precision. The
Appendix contains an
exciting new discovery, a
previously-unknown early
version of the 1st
movement in C major,
which was only
rediscovered in 2012 in
Bremen.

The present

relevant sources. The
preface sketches the
work's genesis from the
moment of its conception
in Rome in late December
1879 (Yesterday, out in
the streets, I heard a
wonderful folksong that I
will most certainly make
use of.) to the first
reviews, in which
Tchaikovsky was accused
of triviality and of
having made an extremely
unfortunate choice of
themes. Yet this did
nothing to hamper the
worldwide success of the
work, and Tchaikovsky's
composer colleagues also
culled ideas from it: a
few years later,
Tchaikovsky himself was
the dedicatee of Nikolay
Rimsky-Korsakov's
Capriccio espagnol.Mit

The Famous
One in the Leading
EditionBeethoven spent a
relatively long time on
his 5th Symphony. Thus,
first sketches can
already be found from as
early as 1804, four years
before the work was
premiered in Vienna in
December 1808. Not only
impressive is its
striking opening theme,
letting everyone know
immediately that this is
Beethoven being played,
but also its nickname
symphony of fate. Nothing
in the sources prefigures
the much-cited fate,
musically knocking here
at the door. The
autograph of the score
and the set of parts
prepared from it,
including Beethoven's
revisions, serve as the
main sources of this
Urtext edition, together
with the missing copy of
the score, now extant
only incomplete in
photographs, and the
original edition of the
parts authorized by
Beethoven. The new
performance material is
based on the recently
published volume of the
New Beethoven Complete
Edition.

New
edition, with preface by
Gerard McBurney. The work
was composed in 1933-38
for one of the greatest
cellists of the 20th
century, Gregor
Piatigorsky. McBurney
explains that, somehow
this concerto had come to
seem jinxed to the
composer. And when, in
1947, he heard it in
Moscow once again, this
time played by the young
Mstislav Rostropovich, he
decided to recast it
(albeit using much of the
same material) as an
entirely new piece, the
Sinfonia Concertante, op
125. The earlier version
never entirely
disappeared, however,
with a scattering of
cellists always
preferring it to the
later one. And in recent
years, it has found new
favor and new champions,
its spectacularly
difficult cello writing
and virtuosic orchestral
effects offering a
brilliance, pungency and
fascination all of their
own..
