Thi
s edition unites all the
purely instrumental parts
of Rameau’s
comdie-ballet “Les
Paladins†for
performance as a suite in
the concert
hall.
In view of
the wealth of the
work’s musical
treasures and the
stylistic innovations
– similar to the
“Boradesâ€
– the rather
frosty reception of the
premiere series in the
spring of 1760 seems
completely
incomprehensible to us
today. It led to this
stage work not being
performed again until
well into the 20th
century. The story that
the comdie-ballet tells
is based on a fable by La
Fontaine, “Le Petit
chien qui secoue de
l’argent et des
pierreries†(i.e.
“The little dog who
shakes silver and
stonesâ€). In
medieval Veneto, the
guardian Anselme
undermines the love
affairs of his ward
Argies. Scenes of tragic
expression are contrasted
with folk-comic ones; and
last but not least, the
sexually ambiguous fairy
Manto may have caused
difficulties for the bold
work at the Paris
Opra.
This
critical edition is based
on the corresponding
volume issued in the
series “Opera omnia
Rameau†(BA
8870-01). Since
“Les
Paladins†remained
unpublished during
Rameau’s lifetime
and was also not included
in the “Œuvres
complètesâ€, this
is the first edition of
the work. It satisfies
both scholarly demand and
the practical needs of
musicians.
The
orchestral parts are
available on
hire.

Like
Hamlet Overture,
originating at about the
same time, Tchaikovsky's
5th symphony, composed in
1888, focuses on the
human existential
question: To be or not to
be - triumph over fate or
triumph of fate? The per
aspera ad astra
dramaturgy underlying the
symphony culminates in
triumphant certainty. If
Tchaikovsky was initially
euphoric, then severe
self-doubts befell him
after he conducted the
premiere in St.
Petersburg. These doubts
demonstrably led him to
make interpretative
changes for the Hamburg
performance in 1889,
including a cut in the
finale. Only with the
extremely positive
response to this
performance did his
doubts dispel.
Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky
himself never again
conducted the 5th
symphony. It was only
posthumously established
in the repertoire through
Arthur Nikisch's
commitment. The new
edition's textual
criticism takes into
account besides the
autograph and first
edition also the first
edition's orchestral
parts, together with the
piano arrangement
produced from the
autograph by Sergei
Taneyev. In addition to
thoroughly clarifying
dynamics and
articulation, the source
comparison also corrected
many errors and solved
problematical passages,
such as, for instance,
the trombone entry in m.
372 of the finale.
Considered, moreover, for
the first time has been
the composer's doubts
about his work and its
ambiguities, frequently
successfully suppressed
in the history of its
performance and
reception. Tchaikovsky's
conductor's copy is
unfortunately lost, hence
his alterations made for
the Hamburg performance
are not precisely known.
They have survived only
indirectly through
remarks that Willem
Mengelberg left to
posterity, for which he
could draw on
Tchaikovsky's conductor's
score and oral references
by the composer's brother
Modest. So, anyone
wishing to deal seriously
with the work's
certainties will not be
able to do so in the
future without having
also to deal with its
uncertainties.

Strauss
had originally intended
that Don Quixotealways be
performed, if possible,
together with
Heldenleben, since Don Q.
in particular is only
fully comprehensible
alongside Heldenleben. To
date, Strauss's wish is
rarely respected. The Don
Quixote Urtext edition
now being published by
Breitkopf & Hartel can
assist here. Once again,
the new edition is based
on Strauss's own
engraver's model, helping
to clarify numerous
misunderstandings, and
facilitating the
correction of dozens of
traditional errors.
Furthermore, the woodwind
parts, previously
available only in
manuscript form, are now
appearing completely
engraved for the first
time.This new edition is
also being augmented by a
piano reduction of the
most important orchestral
passages for facilitating
the study of the solo
cello and viola parts;
these two solo parts are
also separately included
with the purchase of the
piano
reduction.

With the
new edition of the
G-minor Symphony, a vital
work group in Mozart's
oeuvre is now complete:
the three late symphonies
K. 543, 550 and 551, now
available in Urtext
editions. As in his new
edition of the Hafner
Symphony, Henrik Wiese
uncovers in the present
Breitkopf Urtext score
three different stages in
the genesis of the
G-minor Symphony. Mozart
initially wrote the work
without clarinets (1st
stage), and then he added
the clarinets (2nd
stage). Not until a final
stage did he change the
wind instrumentation in
the Andante (3rd stage).
Mozart thus returned to
the 1st version again
after completing the 2nd
version (with clarinets).
This advances the
importance of the 1st
version without clarinets
as Fassung letzter Hand.
A compelling insight
which sheds new light on
the famous G-minor
Symphony. Both versions
are of equal value and
can now be compared with
one another, studied and,
above all, performed for
the first time ever
thanks to the new score
and parts.Another
extremly practical aspect
that should be noted: the
orchestral parts offer
solutions for all the
problematic page turns
for the first time ever
(please see the sample
pages of OB 5542 - Violin
II.),,... the musical
text is fine. This is a
valuable improvement.

Whoever is
looking for orchestral
works in several
movements by Sibelius
before the seven
officially numbered
symphonies will run into
Kullervo op. 7, as well
as Lemminkainen op. 22.
Sibelius follows a
cyclical concept in these
four tone poems, so that
Lemminkainen, owing to
its time of origin, can
truly be labeled as his
Symphony No. Zero. The
previously unprinted
early versions, presented
in the respective volume
of the Complete Edition
for the first time, can
be dated to the year
1895/96. The first
revision was made in
1897, after the world
premiere. Only after this
premiere did Sibelius
write his First Symphony
before he again revised
the Lemminkainen scores
some of them much later
and had them
published.

Conte
xtures: Riots -Decade '60
was commissioned by Zubin
Mehta and the Southern
California Symphony
Association after the
successful premiere of
the Concerto for Four
Percussion Soloists and
Orchestra. It was written
during the spring and
summer months of 1967.
Riots stemming from
resentment against the
racial situation in the
United States and the war
in Vietnam were occurring
throughout the country
and inevitably invaded
the composer's creative
subconscious.
Contextures, as the title
implies, was intended to
exploit various and
varying textures. As the
work progressed the
correspondence between
the fabric of music and
the fabric of society
became apparent and the
allegory grew in
significance. So I found
myself translating social
aspects into musical
techniques. Social
stratification became a
polymetric situation
where disparate groups
function together. The
conflict between the
forces of expansion and
the forces of containment
is expressed through and
opposition of tonal
fluidity vs. rigidity.
This is epitomized in the
fourth movement, where
the brass is divided into
two groups - a muted
group, encircled by the
unmuted one, which does
its utmost to keep the
first group within a
restricted pitch area.
The playful jazzy bits
(one between the first
and second movements and
one at the end of the
piece) are simply saying
that somehow in this age
of turmoil and anxiety
ways of having fun are
found even though that
fun may seem
inappropriate. The piece
is in five movements,
with an interlude between
the first and second
movements. It is scored
for a large orchestra,
supplemented by six
groups of percussion,
including newly created
roto-toms (small tunable
drums) and some original
devices, such as muted
gongs and muted
vibraphone. There is also
an offstage jazz quartet:
bass, drums, soprano
saxophone and trumpet.
The first movement begins
with a solo by the first
clarinetist which is
interrupted by
intermittent heckling
from his colleagues
leading to a
configuration of large
disparate elements. The
interlude of solo violin
and snare-drum follows
without pause. The second
movement, Prestissimo, is
a display piece of
virtuosity for the entire
orchestra. The third
movement marks a period
of repose and reflection
and calls for some
expressive solos,
particularly by the horn
and alto saxophone. The
fourth movement opens
with a rather lengthy
oboe solo, which is
threatened by large
blocks of sound from the
orchestra, against an
underlying current of
agitated energy in the
piano and percussion.
This leads to a section
in which large orchestral
forces oppose one
another, ultimately
bringing the work to a
climax, if not to a
denouement. Various
thematic elements are
strewn all over the
orchestra, resulting in
the formation of a
general haze of sound. A
transition leads to the
fifth movement without
pause. The musical haze
is pierced gently by the
offstage jazz group as if
they were attempting to
ignore and even dispel
the gloom, but a legato
bell sound enters and
hovers over both the jazz
group and the orchestra,
the latter making
statements of disquieting
finality. Two films were
conceived to accompany
portions of Contextures.
The first done by Herbert
Kosowar, was a
chemography film
(painting directly into
the film using dyes and
various implements) with
fast clips of riot
photographs. The second
was a film collage made
by photographically
abstracting details from
paintings of Reginald
Pollack. The purpose was
to invoke a non-specific
response - as in music -
but at the same time to
define the subject matter
of the piece. The films
were constructed to
correspond with certain
developments in the piece
and in no way affect the
independence and musical
flow of the piece, having
been made after the piece
was completed.
Contextures: Riots -
Decade '60 is dedicated
to Mehta, the Southern
California Symphony
Association and the Los
Angeles Philharmonic
Orchestra. The news of
the assassination of Dr.
Martin Luther King came
the afternoon of the
premiere, April 4, 1968.
That evening's
performances, and also
the succeeding ones, were
dedicated to him and a
special dedication to Dr.
King has been inserted
into he score. All the
music that follows the
jazz group - beginning
with the legato bell
sound playing the first 2
notes to We shall
overcome constitutes a
new ending to commemorate
Dr. King's death.

Prophet's dance
is a programmatic work
that suggests the events

tension in the telling of

Note
The title of the
work is borrowed from a
fragment by the German
poet Friedrich
Rückert. This
fragment, this short
sentence (which
Rückert apparently
neverelaborated upon) is
the entire basis of the
work. I was inspired by
the meaning as well as
the sound of these
words. I perceive the
meaning of the sentence
as being a defence for
the refinement of an
individual’s
personal gifts - far from
the present hostility
toward individuality and
the senseless praise of
impersonal success in
society. Personal
refinement can, so the
fragment in my
interpretation, at its
best be accompanied by a
deep sense of
responsibility, and
become an active and
positive influence in
society. The sound,
the timbre, of the
individual words and
characters is employed
both
in straightforward
text-sequences, as well
as in the exploration of
individual vowels and
consonants as pure
sounds. The soprano is
often used purely
instrumentally, echoing
and pre-echoing
discreetly the notes of
the flute and the
harmonics of the double
bass, often imperceptably
stealing their notes and
altering them into human
sounds, which then
yet again are
absorbed into the
instrumental
tapestry.

Teach
shifting with this
beautiful melody by Bob
Phillips. Shifting Sands
is also perfectly suited
for the concert stage.
The moderate, lyric tempo
provides students in the
early stages of
practicing shifts the
time they need to make
the shifts successfully.
Musically, this piece is
very accessible so
students can focus on the
shifts. Violins will
practice 3rd position on
the D, A, and E strings.
Violas will practice 3rd
position on the D and A
strings. Cellos will
practice 3rd and 4th
positions on the D and A
strings. Basses will
practice 3rd, 4th, and
5th positions on the D
and G strings. Shifts for
all instruments are
introduced by moving the

Inspired by
his friend, the composer
Balakirev Tchaikovsky
decided in 1869 to write
an overture to
Shakespeare's drama Romeo
and Juliet. The work was
completed the same year
and received its premiere
soon thereafter, on March
4th, 1870 in Moscow under
the direction of Nikolay
Rubinstein. Following the
performance the composer
worked over the piece
again at Balakirev's
instigation: he wrote a
new introduction and
altered the return and
the end, too. The new
version was first
performed under the baton
of Napravnik in St
Petersburg on February
5th, 1872. By that time
it had become clear that
the composition was
closer to the genre of
symphonic poem than to
that of a theatrical
preludewhich is also
indicated by the
subtitle: 'fantasy
overture'. In the 1880s
Tchaikovsky carried out
further changes in the
score and thus the third
version of Romeo and
Juliet emerged that was
first performed by
Ippolitov-Ivanov as
conductor in Tbilisi on
April 19th, 1886.

Whitehall in an open
Barge, wherein were
Dutchess of Bolton, The
Dutchess of New Castle,
the Countess of
Godolphin, Madam
Kilmaseck, and the Earl

Chelsea. Many other of
Barges with Person of
Quality attended, and so
the great Number of
Boats, that the whole
River in a manner was
couver'd; a City
Company's Barge was
employ'd for the Musick,
wherein were 50
Instruments of all sorts,
Who play'd all the way
from Lambeth (while the
Barges drove with the
Tide without Rowing, as
far as Chelsea) the

compos'd express for this
Occasion, by Mr Hendel:
which his Majesty liked
so well, that he caus'd
it to be play'd over
three times in going and
returning. At Eleven his
Majesty came again into

same Way, the Musick
continuing to play till

Prophet's dance
is a programmatic work
that suggests the events
of a prophecy. There is
tension in the telling of
the future , which is
heard in the opening
percussion, and in the
running string lines as
the piece continues. The
middle dream-like section
depicts the actual
receiving of a prophecy &
once again the ending
depicts the tension as
the prophecy is shared
with the public.
