composed to celebrate
Maestro Carl St. Clair's
25th Anniversary season
with Pacific Symphony.
Maestro St. Clair is one
of the few conductors who
has dedicated his time to
new music and support for
living composers. I first
encountered Maestro St.
Clair in 2004 when I was
one of the finalists for
the Young Composers
Competition. After I won
that competition, I had
an opportunity to work
with Maestro St. Clair on
the piece that he
commissioned for the
Pacific Symphony in 2005.
That's the beginning of
the journey of our
friendship. Illuminating
Journey is inspired by
Maestro St. Clair's
personality and the music
he loved. The piece is
mainly based on the pitch
material from Maestro St.
Clair's name CARL which
can be translated as C =
C, A = A, R = Re, and L =
La. That pitch material
already has the character
of Illuminating sound for
the open 5th and octave.
The piece also
incorporates some musical
references that have some
meaning for Maestro St.
Clair, such as the
hopefulness of the
melodic intervals from
West Side Story, There's
a Place for Us, composed
by Leonard Bernstein, who
was also Maestro St.
Clair's mentor.
Illuminating Journey
starts with the rhythmic
motion of the pitch C and
moves on to create a set
of pitches. The note C
functions as a center for
the endless energy of
this piece and creates a
triumphant ending. I
would personally like to
thank Maestro St. Clair
for his dedication on my
music and his friendship
throughout the past 10
years. The work with
Maestro St. Clair and the
Pacific Symphony was an
early step in my career
as a composer. I often
mentioned that I may not
be able to come this far
without that part of my
life. Thank you very
much, Maestro St. Clair
and the Pacific Symphony.

because its première
was associated with a
political event. Yet this
ballet abounds in novel
dramaturgical effects
that foreshadow his later
operas, such as

together with his
librettist Cahusac,
Rameau sought to weave

today. It led to this
stage work not being
performed again until
well into the 20th
century. The story that
the comdie-ballet tells
is based on a fable by La
Fontaine, “Le Petit
chien qui secoue de
l’argent et des
pierreries†(i.e.
“The little dog who
shakes silver and
stonesâ€). In
medieval Veneto, the
guardian Anselme
undermines the love
affairs of his ward
Argies. Scenes of tragic
expression are contrasted
with folk-comic ones; and
last but not least, the
sexually ambiguous fairy
Manto may have caused
difficulties for the bold
work at the Paris
Opra.
This
critical edition is based
on the corresponding
volume issued in the
series “Opera omnia

unpublished during

Thanks to
its skilful combination
of Romantic melody and
sparkling virtuosity,
KoussevitzkyÂ’s Double
Bass Concerto op. 3 has
been one of the most
popular works of its
genre since its Moscow
premiere in 1905. No
wonder, for the virtuoso
double bass player
Koussevitzky had composed
it for his very own
instrument. As early as
1906/07 a first piano
reduction was published
in Moscow, followed by a
second in 1910 in
Leipzig. However, both
contain so many mistakes
in the solo part that
there is still
uncertainty about the
correct musical text in
many passages to this
day. The double bass
player Tobias Glöckler
has therefore prepared
his Urtext edition using
several sources: as well
as the manuscript
performance material and
the piano reductions
published during the
composer's lifetime, he
has also studied

The new
scholarly-critical
edition of the score of
Rameau’s
“ballet
hroïque†Les
Indes galantes finally
clears up its convoluted
source history. At the
first performance, on 23
August 1735, it consisted
of a prologue and three
acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les
Incas du Prou and Les
Fleurs. But Les Fleurs
already proved
controversial in the
early performances, and
from 11 September of that
same year it was given a
wholly new form. For the
revival on 10 March 1736
Rameau and Fuzelier added
an entirely new act Les
Sauvages, and in the
years that followed, the
“ballet
hroïque†was
presented either complete
(1743, 1751 and 1761) or
abridged with a prologue,
Les Incas du Prou and Les
Sauvages
(1751–73).
With regard to the
instrumental movements
(dances and descriptive
pieces), the present
publication is based on
the complete edition
Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR)
volumes IV/2 and IV/7
edited by Sylvie Bouissou
which are currently in
preparation. It includes
not only the orchestral
pieces in the version
deemed valid by Rameau in
1736 (with version 2 of
Les Fleurs and Les
Sauvages), but also those
from the first version of
Les Fleurs (1735) as well
as its 1743 and 1773
revisions. Performers are
thus given a complete
selection of all the
orchestral numbers from
one of Rameau’s
central stage works for
use also in concert
performance.

series of three
symphonies completed in
late 1784 (nos. 81, 80
and 79, presumably in
that order). No autograph
score survives for Hob.
I:81, thus our Urtext
edition is based on
copyists’
manuscripts and first
editions. As with so many
of his symphonies, Haydn
wrote this one to provide
new music for his
employer, Prince Nikolaus
Esterházy.

the composer have come
down to us only on a few
of Haydn’s
symphonies, amongst them
the “Laudonâ€
Symphony Hob. I:69. In
one of these letters,
Haydn agrees to the
publisher’s
suggestion to name the
symphony after the widely
known and favoured
general Gideon Ernst von
Laudon (1717-1790). By
using this name, both
composer and publisher
hoped to increase the
commercial success of the
work which possibly
deserved a military
eponym considering its
instrumentation with
timpani and trumpets.
Also, the symphony
requires two bassoons,
but no flutes,
corresponding with the
available musicians at
the court of Esterházy
between 1775 and 1776.

autumn of 1880 at his
sister's country estate
in Kam'ianka, Ukraine,
where he sought peace and
relaxation. But after a

Quilting,
co-commissioned by the
BBC Symphony Orchestra
and the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, is my first
stand alone work for
orchestraand is loosely
inspired by the American
tradition of quilt
making. I composed
Quilting while living
most of last year in
Paris.During my time
there, I thought a lot
about what it means to
compose symphonic music
as a young American in
the 21st century, when so
many of the many
masterworks which are
programmed year in and
out by orchestras across
the country are European.
I considered which
artistic traditions
defined the American
19th-century. I began to
think of the American
crafts-tradition of
quilting as a foilto the
high-art tradition of
European orchestral
composition. As the score
for my new work began to
take shape, I started
thinking about the
manuscript itself as an
object, its vertical and
horizontal planes create
a kind of patterned
geometry of their own.
Visually the way a
musical score is woven
together like patchwork
brought to mind quilts
and the great American
tradition of quilting. I
imagined about how
conducting an orchestra
can feellike stitching a
piece together, or sewing
together a large number
of musical ideas and
musicians into a coherent
and transcendent whole.
Quilting was an integral
part of American
vernacular in the 18th
and 19th centuries, the
African-American quilting
tradition is especially
fascinating, and the
quilts tell the stories
of the women and
communities who made
them. The names of the
quilt patterns themselves
can have their own sense
of narrative: 'jacobs
ladder', 'drunkards
path', 'solomon's
puzzle', and (my favorite
for its relevance to this
piece) 'the road to

shortly after losing his
hearing, Smetana started
work on
“VyÅ¡ehradâ€
, the first symphonic
poem in what would become
a six-part cycle with the
title “Má
vlast†(My
Country). It tells the
eventful history of this
fort in
Prague.
“Vy
¡ehrad†was
published by Urbánek
together with
“Vltava†(The
Moldau), the next part in
the cycle, in a version
for piano duet in
December 1879. The full
score and parts,
proofread by the
composer, followed in
February 1880. Hugh
Macdonald has corrected
many errors in this first
edition. He draws on the
autograph and first print
of the orchestral version
and also refers to the
autograph and printed

Brahms
composed his Triumphlied
for eight-part chorus,
solo baritone and
orchestra as a direct
reaction to the victory
of the German army in the
Franco-Prussian War of
1870/71 and the
consequent founding of
the German Empire.
Similar to the German
Requiem completed shortly
before, Brahms himself
compiled the text from
the Bible, in this case
from Chapter 19 of the
Book of Revelations.
Because of the somewhat
melodramatic tone of the
composition and the
nationalistic background
to the works genesis, in
recent years the
Triumphlied has seldom
been heard in concert
halls. Unlike
overly-patriotic
occasional works such as
Richard Wagner's
Kaisermarsch, the
Triumphlied is true
Brahms and is a musically
rich composition. This
study edition takes the
musical text from the
Brahms Complete Edition
(HL 51486030), thereby
representing the highest
scholarly precision. The
Appendix contains an
exciting new discovery, a
previously-unknown early
version of the 1st
movement in C major,
which was only
rediscovered in 2012 in
Bremen.
