Richard
Strauss's last completed
tone poem is regarded as
the pinnacle of his art
of orchestration: Now
I've finally learned to
orchestrate, he himself
is once supposed to have
said about it after the
dress rehearsal. The
single-movement Alpine
symphony that we know
today ultimately evolved
- over almost 15 years -
from the original drafts
of an artist's tragedy,
titled Der Antichrist.
Eine Alpensinfonie [The
Antichrist. An Alpine
Symphony] up to the stage
of the last sketches.
With unprecedented
plasticity, the work
showcases a
(metaphysical?) mountain
hike with stops in the
forest, at the waterfall,
on the alpine pasture
and, of course, at the
summit. Apropos alpine
pastures: up to the
score's fair copy stage,
Strauss envisaged a high
and a low alphorn for the
section Auf der Alm [On
the Alpine Pasture] and
the well-known Dulioh
theme, though for various
reasons first detailed in
our new Urtext edition,
these exotic instruments
did not find their way
into the printed version.
In the new edition, the
editor, Nick Pfefferkorn,
reproduces the alphorn
passages in small print,
also adding two alphorn
parts to the performance
material, besides
evaluating the
corrections made by
Walter Seifert at
Strauss's
request.

This work,
written by Maxwell Davies
in 1983 for chamber
orchestra, was
commissioned to celebrate
the quartercentenary of
Edinburgh University. The
first performance was
given by the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra
conducted by Edward
Harper in October 1983.
Duration c. 29mins. This
work was thought through
in outline following a
visit to the ruined
pre-Reformation church of
Hoy in Orkney, on a fine
Spring afternoon after
Maxwell Davies had played
the harmonium for the
tiny congregation in its
large bleak Victorian
replacement. The old
church was surrounded by
the graves of centuries,
the more recent ones with
familiar names, largely
of people who lived in
houses now ruinous -
crofters, fishermen,
clerics, sea-captains.
Next to it stood the
chief farmhouse, the Bu,
going back to Viking
times. He thought of the
lives and deaths
encompassed there,
expressed through
hundreds of years of
music in the church, and
in the big barn of the
farm. The plainsongs
'Dies Irae' and 'Victimae
Paschali Laudes' are used
throughout the work - the
first concerning the Day
of Judgement, from the
Mass for the Dead, the
second particular to
Easter Sunday and the
Resurrection. These are
subject to constant
transformation - the
intervallic contour
slowly changes from one
into the other, and their
notes are made to dance
through Renaissance
astrological 'magic
square' patterns. The
orchestra consists of
double woodwind, two
horns, two trumpets and
strings.

Debussy
wrote these two short
dances to a commission
from the
instrument-making firm of
Pleyel, which was keen to
use famous names in the
marketing of its
newly-developed chromatic
harp. The dances are also
playable without problem
on the pedal harp, which
was to replace the
chromatic harp on the
concert platform. The
archaic style of the
pieces, including modal
harmonies, used to
express a
“sacred†rite
and a
“profaneâ€
dance of joy, points to
the enthusiasm for
antiquity of Debussy
himself and of the
artistic world around
1900. This is Henle's
first critical edition of
the pieces, and is based
on careful checking of
the autograph and first
edition.

'homeward' in Yiddish)
was directly inspired by
his parents' migration to
Brooklyn. The score in
this edition was first
performed by the London
Sinfonietta at the
Southbank Centre in
London on the 9th of
October 2012. The work
lasts around 8 minutes
and isfilled with dynamic
tempo changes, a mix of
staccato and smooth
playing and all-round
excitement. It's a
fantastic piece to play
and the genius
composition will keep
audiences on their

In
his brief career George
Butterworth (1885-1916)
composed only a small
quantity of orchestral
works, but what he wrote
has never subsequently
been absent from the
repertoire. The two
English Idylls, the
Rhapsody 'A
Shropshire Lad' and
the idyll The Banks
of Green Willow are,
with the music of his
friend Ralph Vaughan
Williams and of Gustav
Holst, among the most
exquisite statements of
the English folk-song
idiom. This complete and
authoritative collection
includes an earlier
version of The Banks
of Green Willow, and
a fragment of an
Orchestral
Fantasia. Work in
progress in 1914 when
Butterworth enlisted to
serve in the Great War,
it suggests the composer
setting out in a bolder
direction, perhaps
inspired by the example
of Vaughan Williams's
A London
Symphony.

The
story centres on the
English princess Caroline
Mathilde (1751-1775),
sister of George III, who
at the age of 15 was sent
to Denmark to marry the
17-year-old eccentric and
schizophrenic Danish
King, Christian VII. The
ballet portrays her
unhappy marriage, the
King's growing madness
and her fatal love-affair
with Struensee, the
King's influential
physician, which leads to
their arrest, his
execution and her exile,
at the age of 20,
separated from her two
young children. In
keeping with the period,
and perhaps also with the
traditions of Romantic
ballet, the music is
relatively simple in
harmony and form, and
most of the action is
conveyed in set-piece
dances. The suite, which
consists essentially of
the second half of Act I,
begins with one of these,
a bristling interplay of
wind and string ensembles
in D major, portraying in
the ballet a curious
nuptial game with the
king and princess on
movable pedestals. The
slow music that follows
has to do with the king's
healing by Dr. Struensee
and the new queen's
unquiet reverie (oboe and
cor anglais solos). Then
the suite, like the act,
is capped by a pair of
pas-de-deux, the first
savage and bizarre for
the royal couple, the
second rich and
passionate for the queen
and the miracle-working
doctor. Score

Fuego Fatuo has
an interesting history.
Manuel De Falla
(1876-1946), often
regarded as the greatest
Spanish composer of the
20th century, wanted to
write an opera based
around themes from
Chopin, whomhe greatly
admired. The stage work
was never finished;
however, several attempts
have been made to arrange
the work for orchestra,
most successfully by the
Catalan conductor
Antoni
Ros-Marba.
Des
pite its history,this
orchestral suite is far
from being a mere
mish-mash of Chopin
melodies; it is more of a
meditation on Chopin's
work in general, with the
focus on the harmonic and
textural elements which
De Falla drew
from his work.It forms a
fascinating insight into
the mind of a great
musician.

The
starting point was the
collected letters of
Vincent van Gogh. In
spite of the tragedies
for which van Gogh is
best known, his letters
are filled with joyous
exuberance for the
practical considerations
of his work: what he will
paint next and, most
importantly, what colours
he will use. For Julian
Anderson, it seems the
painter relishes 'the
sheer stuff of which his
art is made'. In Van Gogh
Blue, Anderson relishes
the sheer stuff of which
his own art is made. Its
a very physical, highly
contrasted work about the
joy of sound.
Instrumental colour plays
a large role, and
Andersons use of two
mobile clarinetists
allows extra colour as
their sound moves through
the acoustic space of the
hall.

After
completing his studies
with Zoltan Kodaly, the
Hungarian composer
Mathias Seiber
(1905-1960) first worked
as a musician in a dance
orchestra on an ocean
liner which gave him the
opportunity to listen to
jazz music in New York.
From 1928 he taught the
first jazz class
worldwide at Dr. Koch's
Conservatoire in
Frankfurt. In the winter
term of 1928/29, 19
students had registered
with whom he gave a
public concert on 3 March
1929 which was broadcast
by Radio Frankfurt. After
the Nazis had seized
power, the jazz class was
dissolved, Seiber lost
his job and emigrated to
London.In 1932 he wrote
his piano cycle 'Leichte

of the early examples of
the adoption of jazz
forms and styles in
so-called serious music.

'Acquainted
with Night', is a cycle
of six songs, for alto
and strings, harp and
timpani. The texts are
all concerned with
different aspects of
night. The first song,
'Lullaby' to a poem by
Beaumont and Fletcher,
seeks to evoke the
'care-charming' powers of
sleep. The second, a
setting of Robert Frost's
'Acquainted with the
night', is concerned with
the lonely world of a
strange city at night and
the music is
characterised by an
insistently repeated
figure in the
accompaniment. The third
song contrasts the
calmness of the night
with the turbulence in a
lover's mind - the poem
is by the Earl of Surrey.
'Out in the dark' a poem
by Edward Thomas, is the
text of the fourth song.
It is in the form of a
scherzo and deals with
the mystery and
strangeness of night,
and, as the poet puts it,
the 'might' of night. It
is, as the poet says, a
hymn to night and the
chordal nature of the
accompaniment suggests
this quality. This song
leads directly into the
last, which is in fact a
reprise of the opening
'Lullaby' so completing
the cycle.
