At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just as important was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction. The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. Like its companions Nos. 90 and 91, Haydn's Symphony #92 in G major was written in 1789. All three symphonies were commissioned in 1788 by Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was to be granted exclusive ownership. However, Haydn first sold the works to the Parisian Masonic lodge Société Olympique and was thus unable to fulfil his obligation to send the autograph scores to the prince. The symphony received its nickname 'Oxford? in the 19th century, probably in connection with a performance that took place when Haydn received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791. / Orchestre

On March 2nd he premiered Gade?s C minor Symphony at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. On 26 October of the same year the 26 year old Danish composer conducted the second performance himself and in the following year he was engaged as co-conducter of the Gewandhaus concerts. His first symphony, however, was to remain Gade?s greatest success: unique are its colourful instrumentation, atmospheric melodies and the characteristic sound world which we know as Nordic.
