has no extra-musical
agenda. The composer
explains that he took the
harmonic structure of the
chorale and embedded it
in his own harmonies.
“I make an analogy
with the rise and fall of
the tide. When the tide
is in, the sea-bed is
invisible; but when the
tide goes out, you see
the rock formation on the

teils frei zitiert und
von Holz- oder
Blechblasern intoniert.
Diese Zitate gliedern,
als formale und
inhaltliche Schwer- und
Ruhepunkte, den Verlauf
des gesamten Werks. Jedes
Zitat steht zu Beginn
eines neuen
Satzabschnitts; die
darauffolgenden
>>Metamorphosen<<
entwickeln sich als
rhapsodische
kontrastreiche
Charakterstucke. Im
>>Preludio<< werden aus
den vertonbaren
Buchstaben vom Namen
>>Gesualdo<< (G - E - Es
- A - D) schwebende
Klangflachen,
rezitativische Gedanken
und ein pragnantes
rhythmisches Paukenthema
gebildet. Diese

Im vierten Abschnitt

Der funfte Teil steigert

Trauermarsch. Abschnitt

ein Stuck Bekenntnismusik
- Bekenntnis zum Leben
und Schaffen Gesualdos,
eines Mannes, der vom
Schicksal gezeichnet war,
denn der Chronik Neapels
bekannt war durch die
Ermordung seiner ersten
Frau und ihres
Liebhabers. Dieser
eminente Musiker war
zugleich ein Mensch von
ubertriebener
Sensibilitat und wilder
ekstatischer Heftigkeit:

heimgesucht, die ihm
keine Ruhe gaben, heisst
es in einem

(MGV)
translates as ‘high
speed music’ and
was commissioned by the
Festival de Lille for the
inauguration of the TGV
North EuropeanParis-Lille
line in 1993.
This
piece of sheet music runs
continuously, but was
conceived as an abstract,
imaginary journey; or
rather five
inter-connected journeys,
each ending with a slow,
mainly stepwise melody
which isonly heard in its
'genuine' form when the
piece reaches its
destination.
Thematic
'transformation' is a key
to MGV
as a whole. Throughout
the piece ideas -
rhythmic, melodic,
harmonic, motivic,
textural -constantly
change their identity as
they pass through
different musical
'environments'.
The opening bars
establish both a
recurrent rhythmic
principle - 9, 11, or
13-beat rhythmic cycles
heard against a regular 8
- and aharmonic process -
chord sequences (mainly
over C and E) which have
the note E in common.
(Coincidentally,
MGV
begins in C and ends in
E). A later scalic,
syncopated figure (again
first heard over C, E and
A)begins the second
section, featuring Brass,
in D flat.
The
topography of
MGV
should be experienced
without reference to
planning, description or
timetables. Its tempo
changes and unpredictable
slowings downbear no
logical relation to the
high speed of the
Paris-Lille journey,
while the temptation to
treat
MGV as a
concerto grosso, with the
Michael Nyman
band as the ripeno, was
resisted: more suitably
theband (amplified in
live performance) lays
down the tracks on which
MGV
runs.

unpublished 13-minute
work, which was first
performed in 2002 by the
Philharmonia Orchestra,
conducted by Jukka-Pekka
Saraste. The title
clearly suggests a
parade; but, as Lindberg
points out, in Spanish,
'parada' also denotes a
bus-stop or taxi-rank: a
wry acknowledgement,
perhaps, of the long wait
for a slow movement from
this composer at that
time. For him, Parada is
the middle panel of a
loosely conceived
triptych, the flanking
sections of which are
Feria (1997) and Cantigas
(1999). Lindberg draws a
parallel with Debussys
Images, in which each of
the three parts was
conceived and premiered
separately, and retains
its own identity.

Opernplanen gleicht einem
abenteuerlichen Streifzug
quer durch die
Literaturgeschichte.
Seinem ,,Haushaltbuch II,
einer Art Tagebuch,
konnen wir entnehmen,
dass er sich am 28.Juni
1844 plotzlichmit dem
,,Corsar von Byron
befasste. Schumann war
zunachst von dem Stoff so
begeistert, dass er
sofort mit der
Komposition begann, noch
ehe der Plan wirklich
ausgereift war, aber
schon einen Monat spater
wandte er sich einer
anderen Arbeit zu,
namlich den Faust-Szenen,
die ihn bis 1853
beschaftigen sollten.Von
einer Ouverture ist
nichts bekannt, ein
einleitender ,,Chor der
Corsaren, in dem diese -
mit ihren Frauen, denn es
ist ein gemischter Chor!
- in enger textlicher
Anlehnung an den Anfang
des Byronschen Versepos
ihr wildes, ungebundenes
Leben auf dem Meer
besingen, wurde in
vollstandiger Partitur
niedergeschrieben. Ihm
schliesst sich, ebenfalls
vollstandig
instrumentiert, ein
Nachspiel an, das durch
seine zauberhafte
romantische Stimmung
gefangennimmt. Ein
c-uroll Akkord schlagt
die harmonische Brucke
zur Nr. 2 (Arie des
Conrad), die in B-dur
steht und mit den fur
Schumann so typischen
punktierten Figuren den
Titelhelden als
Kampfernatur zu
charakterisieren sucht.
Doch schon nach 5 Takten
bricht die Partitur ab,
von der Singstimme sind
noch weitere 6 Takte, am
Schluss ohne Text,
niedergeschrieben.Die
Urauffuhrung fand am 25.
April 1981 im Rahmen
eines konzertanten
Opernabends mit dem Titel
,,Opernfragmente der
Romantik im Badischen
Staatstheater Karlsruhe
statt.

The strong contrasts of
the opening, however,
continue throughout the
movement, with frequent
surprises as textures and
surface rhythms
change—sometimes
surging forward,
sometimes held back. But
behind this is the steady
one-in-a-bar beat of the
classical scherzo,
providing a background
rhythmic continuity to
tie the surface contrasts
together.

nach Kriterien zu ordnen

mir seinerzeit noch nicht
zur Verfugung standen,
und die recht
skizzenhafte Anlage des
Urtexts in eine Klangwelt
heruberzutragen, die
meinen heutigen
Vorstellungen und
Wertbegriffen von Theater
und Musik entspricht und
die gleichzeitig das
heutige kulturelle Klima
Neapels widerspiegelt und
damit eine besondere Art
von Wirklichkeit, die
mich einmal so sehr
gefangengenommen,
bezaubert und beeinflusst
