A salute to
the famous sailboat race,
this rollicking piece in
A minor introduces
compound time with an
opening (and closing)
section in 12/8. The fast
flowing music of the
opening, vividly
suggestive of a ship
slicing through the
waves, returns in a
higher key (B minor)
after a warmly scored,
sweepingly melodic middle
section. This is a piece
whose sophistication is
an excellent showcase for
a more advanced
performing
group. Written in 12/8
in A minor,
America’s Cup
evokes the intensity and
momentum of a wild sea
with driving triplets,
sweeping melodies, and
accented downbeats. The
A-material from the
opening measure is played
aggressively but lightly
enough to keep the
feeling of forward
motion. Strong accents
and rhythmically precise
playing in the cello and
bass provide solid
support for the fast
moving violin and viola
passages. Measure 67
begins the slow, pastoral
setting of the
B-material. A gentle,
lyrical violin motive in
A major grows into a
high, sweeping melody
over sustained harmonies.
This provides a brief
repose before returning
to the fastoriginal tempo
and minor key as the
recapitulation begins at
m. 90. A modulation to B
minor (m. 94) lifts the
energy of the piece and
gives young players the
challenge of playing the
running lines in another
key. Measure 118 builds
to the end, keeping the
intensity a soft dynamic
and growing into the
final syncopated tutti
unison figure in mm.
122–123.

A warm and
richly scored setting of
the popular Christmas
carol Bring a Torch
Jeanette, Isabella, this
full sounding arrangement
will greatly enrich
seasonal programming. Roy
Phillippe has employed a
broad palette of harmonic
and instrumental colors
to craft a memorable
holiday
selection. Bring a
Torch is a lovely
Christmas carol. Using
techniques such as
suspensions,
re-harmonization and
modulations, my goal is
to provide an interesting
showcase for this
familiar melody. the
introduction in F major
features sustained
violins with a pattern of
moving eighth notes in
the violas and cellos.
This pattern recurs
throughout the piece. The
first statement of the
melody is in the first
violins. The second
violins supply harmonic
support along with the
viola/cello pattern.
Measures 13-29 feature a
section of tutti chordal
playing. Measure 30
crescendos into the
modulation to D major at
m. 32. Here, the dynamic
is forte, and the
viola/cello pattern
returns. At m. 40, the
violas and cellos have
the melody with violin
accompaniment. A
crescendo begins at m. 44
and builds
to fortissimo at m.
48, featuring a
modulation to G major. At
this point the melody
should soar. A
descrescendo at m. 60 is
followed by a ritard
at m. 64. The final four
measures are in the
original tempo ending on
a tutti chord.Careful
attention to dynamics,
especially in the
accompanying parts, will
result in a fine
performance.

This
outstanding original from
Larry Clark can be played
any time of year! A
vigorous theme moves
through all the sections
and violas combine with
second violins for
prominent solo passages.
A section in minor adds
to the drama as strong
rhythmic chords give way
to a subdued tremolo in
the first violins,
reminiscent of Vivaldi's
Winter This music reaches
a level of intensity your
players and audience will
love. Out of the
Winter is a musical
depiction of the many
moods of winter from its
harsh storms to its
simple beauty. The
composition is based on a
central main theme that
is musically developed
throughout the
composition presented in
and out of major and
minor keys.The main theme
begins right away without
introduction and is set
to depict the simple
delicate beauty of a
light falling snow. The
theme is then developed
in the minor key using
simple contrapuntal
techniques that give the
composition a fresh sound
for pieces at this grade
level. The aggressive
development of the piece
is a musical description
of a powerful winter
storm. The tension of
this section is built to
a climax using
simple divisi in the
strongs and some
poly-chordal harmonic
techniques that give way
to a final return of the
main theme to complete
the piece.Special care
should be given to
exaggerating the contrast
between the two diverse
sections of the piece.
The main theme should be
light and uplifting. The
second section with the
theme in minor should
have an ominous presence,
but still be reminiscent
of the original light
main theme. As with all
of my compositions at
this grade level, adjust
the tempo to fit the
ability level of your
students. It is hope that
this piece helps to
reinforce the concepts of
good musicianship which
you are trying to instill
in your students. Bowings
should be used as a guide
and should be adjusted to
your needs.It has been my
pleasure to have had the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope that you
and your students find it
useful for your
program.

The title
depicts the uplifting
nature of the piece that
inspires young players to
have confidence and
respect while living with
character and integrity.
The music is
characterized by strong
melodic intervals of
fourths and fifths and
dynamic contrasts, a
Larry Clark signature
that has made his music
so popular. In addition,
every player is an
important part of the
music. This is a perfect
showpiece for developing
groups for concerts or
festivals. As a former
teacher I always tried to
use the experience of
playing in an ensemble to
teach students about
being good people first b
having confidence, being
respectful, living with
character and integrity.
I choose to write music
with titles that will
stimulate students to
strive for this high
standard and I have tried
to write pieces that will
somehow musically depict
these values.
Integrity is one
such piece. I hope you
will find the main theme
to be uplifting and with
musical integrity, but
within the reach of
developing students. My
themes usually are
characterized by strong
melodic intervals of
fourths and fifths and
this piece is no
exception. It is also my
goal when writing music
for younger students to
provide every section in
the ensemble a chance to
play important melodic
material at some point in
the piece. In my humble
opinion, if students are
given music they like to
play they will want to
practice it over and over
again. The tempo markings
and bowings indicated are
only there as a guide and
should be adjusted to the
needs of your students.

Summer
Dance is a melodic,
up-tempo piece with
plenty of musical and
technical challenges for
every player. Musicians
should strive to play it
with an energetic yet
legato feel. A
spirited introduction
features an opening
melody in the violins and
active repeated-note
pedal patters in the
violas and low strings.
An AABA form begins at
m.5 and the orchestration
is immediately pared down
to feature violin I and
cello. It then builds
again in density to the B
section, where a quick
dynamic drop allows a
question-and-answer
melody between the two
parts to sing out. In m.
29, the melody is
harmonized and a
countermelody in violin I
introduced. The violins
take the melody soaring
in octaves in m. 33, as
the piece again builds to
the B section and
suddenly quiets. Measure
55 then provides more
question-and-answer
interplay, this time for
viola and cello, while
violin continues with its
newly harmonized melody.
Summer Dance finishes
with a soft recurrence of
the opening figure and a
build toward a powerful

on beat 3 of m. 63, right

This is a
tour-de-force for the
advancing string
orchestra. Beautiful,
dramatic, and flowing,
Waterloo Station is very
fresh and contemporary.
Students will love it for
the lush harmonic
textures and rhythmic
drive that this composer
is so noted
for. Composed as a
characterization of the
fast-paced atmosphere of
London’s Waterloo
Train Station, this
fast-slow-fast piece
combines technical
excitement with heartfelt
simplicity.The fast
section in G minor
consists of two main
parts: the intense,
emotional A section at m.
21 and the legato,
sweeping B section at m.
59. The syncopated tutti
figures in the high
strings coupled with the
fiery cello and bass
lines propel the fast
sections. The phrase in
mm. 1–8 recurs
throughout. Making four-
to eight-measure
exercises of this section
below tempo in the
violins and viola,
focusing on rhythmic
clarity, will help to
lock in the syncopation.
Similarly, the cello and
bass should rehearse this
slowly as well as mm.
9–16 to gain
fluidity and insure a
solid foundation.The
cellos carry the tune at
m. 71, and the ensemble
builds from mm.
79–86 to the
transition at m. 87. An
abrupt change to half
tempo here slows the
momentum and transitions
to a quiet, melancholy
tone in m. 91. The middle
section (ABA) begins in G
minor with a somber
quality, highlighted by
the Violin I solo. It
gradually builds to a
beautiful, uplifting
setting as it moves to G
major in m. 100.
Returning back to the
hushed G minor tonality,
it then speeds up again
and transitions back to
Tempo I for a brief
recapitulation of the
fast section. Measure 117
marks the return to
vigorous playing,
beginning softly and
building to a thrilling
ride to the end.

The fast
paced rondo has a Dorian
flavored melody with
hints of quartel (based
on an interval of a
fourth) harmony to give
it a contemporary sound
The players are presented
with solo opportunities
as well as harmonic turns
and twists that will keep
them. Rondo in the
Nick of Time was
originally the third
movement for a woodwind
quintet piece that I
wrote in 1990. I have
always been fond of this
little piece and felt
that it would adapt well
to larger ensembles. I
have also scored this
piece for band as part of
a suite called Upon a
New Horizon.The main
theme is based on the
Dorian Mode. The use of
quartal harmony makes up
most of the harmonic
material. Each statement
of the theme is followed
by an episode that
increases in length each
time. There is a sudden
change of style and tempo
in the middle of the
piece, where fragments of
the theme are developed.
The title is a
play-on-words, since the
work contains hemiola
effects that alter the
feel of the time.As with
all of my pieces for
strings, the bowings are
given only as a
reference. Feel free to
alter them to fit the
needs of your students. I
have indicated a rather
fast tempo for the piece.
I really like the piece
to fly, but it will work
and sound fine at a
slower tempo as well.
Just endeavor to keep
their energy moving
forward.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope that you
and your students enjoy
it and find it useful in
your program.-Larry
ClarkLakeland, FL.

With this
arrangement, my goal is
to maintain the integrity
of the original work,
while making it
accessible to the younger
orchestra. An important
aspect of the successful
performance of this piece
is maintaining an
energetic tempo. The
repeated eighth notes in
the accompaniment should
be played cleanly and
crisply to maintain
momentum. There are many
places where abrupt
changes in dynamics
occur. For example, m. 1
begins with a string
unison forte,
which suddenly drops to
piano at m. 11.
Accents, staccatos, and
other articulations
should be carefully
observed. To be
effective, crescendos
should begin at a
reasonable volume, so
they have somewhere to go
dynamically. I hope you
and the orchestra enjoy
this arrangement. With

Characte
r was composed to
introduce young string
players to contemporary
harmonic techniques while
still being within the
technical limitations of
the developing student.
Quartal and quintal
harmonies open the
composition with a
fanfare gesture that ties
the piece together. This
is followed by an
ostinato in the first
violins that contains a
tricky figuration between
G and A that will work
the pinky finger on the
D-string. Players who are
not capable of
maneuvering their pinky
at this brisk tempo
should play the lower
part. The main theme is
given to the inner voice
for a change! After the
main theme there is a
development section that
combines fragments of the
fanfare material with
fragments of the main
theme. A grand pause and
then a stronger statement
of the main theme then
follow this with the
first violins up an
octave. The piece is then
completed with a short
coda containing fragments
of the ostinato and
fanfare material. It
feels natural for the
tempo to speed up
slightly at this point in
the piece. As with all of
my pieces at this level,
the tempo is merely a
suggestion and should be
adjusted slower or faster
to fit the needs of your
students and the
performance situation. It
has been my pleasure to
have the opportunity to
write this piece. I hope
you and your students
enjoy it and find it
useful for your program.

Beginning String
Orchestra. FJH Beginning
Strings. This
fun-spirited fiddle tune
begins with a unison
statement of the theme,
then gradually expands in
harmony until the entire
ensemble is into the
groove. While the theme
develops, the initial
pizzicato in the low
strings serves as the
rhythm section of the
group. Other members of
the orchestra take over
this rhythm section,
including violas (and
optional violin 3),
stomping and clapping as
the hoedown begins to
roar. As is
characteristic of much
fiddle music, Hey Fiddle
Fiddle! is based mostly
on open 4ths and 5ths.
These intervals become
the focus of the piece at
measure 49, where violins
and violas trade phrases
back and forth with low
strings. One final build
brings the tune back for
a stirring conclusion.
