Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert.Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian 'St. Wenceslas? hymn. The hymn's message - a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint - was immediately understood by the audience.The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914 - the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. for String Orchestra Score and Parts. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. In the key of G Major, the work begins with a Moderato where dotted rhythms are abundant. A brief Adagio intervenes and we continue with a slightly fugal, crisply rhythmic Allegro, with 16th note passage work for the upper strings. After another brief Adagio, Handel finishes with a lyric Minuet. All sections are active throughout. This Simple Symphony is entirely based on material from works which the composer wrote between the ages of nine and twelve. (The actual sources are given in footnotes to each movement.) Although the development of these themes is in many places quite new, there are large stretches of the work which are taken bodily from the early pieces - save for the re-scoring for strings. It is suitable for string quartets or string orchestras, being scored for Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

Of all his early chamber works, the Nocturne is most clearly by the mature Vaughan Williams, almost anticipating the influence of Ravel which followed his lessons from the French composer in 1908. In the veiled beauty of its highly chromatic harmonies we hear already the tone-poet of the slow movement of A London Symphony , while in the fleet-footed Scherzo there is already a French influence in the way the folk-song is subtly woven into the texture, only brief snatches of the tune being heard until the penultimate page when it receives fuller treatment. The work plays for about 10 minutes. The 1904 Scherzo is a vigorous march with fugal episodes which lasts some 6 minutes and may effectively be performed by itself. / Niveau : Elémentaire / Répertoire / Quintette à Cordes

A fun and challenging multi-meter work for a mature school orchestra! The waltz stalls and lurches through the melody with rapidly changing time signatures to give a crazy, off-kilter feel to the work. This piece is ripe for some on-stage theatrics. (2:40) / Orchestre A Cordes

This original work by Thom Sharp is an energetic adventure-themed rondo in which every section takes the lead heading off into the horizon looking for adventure. The rhythm of the A theme is used for new melodies in the contrasting sections, either in its original form or starting on a different beat to create a new, yet familiar, rhythm. The last iteration of the A melody employs augmentation. All of these devices provide ample opportunity for instructing students in form and structure and provide for efficient rehearsal time! Par OTTO TANNER. Fight the Resistance! by Tanner Otto is an exciting and dynamic march-style piece and was written to highlight the skill of playing closer to the bridge. In order to play the sustained melodic lines forte, students must 'fight the resistance' of the bridge by changing their bowing lane. It also reinforces the low-2 finger pattern (A minor) with a few accidentals. The cellos have very accessible shifting, and all sections get to play the melody. Originally composed for full orchestra, the movement opens with a powerful C-minor introduction before turning to a bright, cheerfuland graceful C major. Later in the work, the tonality turns to E-flat, and eventually returns to C minor.
