The
march style is important
to the heritage of the
modern concert band. Why
not get beginners off to
a great start by teaching
them this essential band
style as early as
possible? Achieve u
ses only the first six
notes of the Bb-major
scale and utilizes two
repeated eighth notes as
the most difficult
rhythm. It is written in
traditional march form
and style, but without
modulation in the
trio. The march
style is important
to the heritage of the
modern concert band, and
it is my opinion that
even the youngest of
students should be taught
the march style and form
as early as
possible. This march
sets out to give these
students that
opportunity. It uses only
the first six notes of
the Bb-major scale, and
the most difficult rhythm
is two repeated eighth
notes. Yet it has all of
the traditional march
form and style. The
form of this easy march
is the traditional intro,
first strain, second
strain and trio. The
only difference from more
challenge marches is that
the key does not change
to the subdominant at the
trio. Most everything
else is the same as you
would find in the
American marches of
Sousa, Fillmore or
King.The march begins
forte with a quote from
the end of the second
strain, something that is
common in many
marches. This is
followed by the first
strain at a softer
dynamic
level. Additional
voices are added on the
repeat for
variety. The second
strain has tradition
changes in dynamics,
first starting out loud,
then getting soft with
crescendos to the end of
the strain. The trio
following again in
typical fashion with the
first time being very
soft and legato. There
are some suggestions for
changing the
orchestration, but you
can use your creativity
to tailor the
instrumentation to your
musical taste. The
repeat of the trio should
then be back to a more
marcato march
style. This should
start with the last note
of the first ending in m.
70. The march then
ends with the traditional
stinger.It is my opinion
that in marches with this
form that the repeats
should not be eliminated.
By doing so, it changes
the form and makes the
march lopsided, with the
first half of the
marching being too short
compared to the trio
section.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope you and
your students enjoy it
and find it useful for
your
program.—Larry

Every year a
competition for wind
orchestras and brass
bands takes place in
Wallberg, Switzerland.
Apart from a hymn and a
solo piece, all
orchestras also have a
compulsory piece to play.
The commission to create
a compulsory piece for
the 2012 competition fell
to Jan de Haan. The
composition is entitled
Musica Helvetica.
It takes the form of a
three-part concert work,
in which the last two
parts flow directly from
one to the other. The
first part, Musica
Prima, is a brisk
virtuoso opening with
jazz flavours woven in.
The following section,
Musica Sacra,
offers a contrast with an
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation for the
gorgeous main theme.
Thefinal part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the great variety of
scenery in Switzerland.
With its witty humour it
makes a worthy conclusion
to this beautiful
tryptich.
In het
Zwitserse Wallberg wordt
ieder jaar een concours
voor harmonieorkesten en
brassbands georganiseerd.
Naast een hymne en een
solowerk dienen alle
orkesten een verplicht
werk uit te voeren. Voor
het concours van 2012
werd eenopdracht
verstrekt aan Jan de
Haan. De compositie kreeg
Musica Helvetica
als titel mee. Het gaat
om een driedelig
concertwerk waarvan de
laatste twee delen
onafgebroken in elkaar
overgaan. Het eerste
deel, Musica
Prima,is een virtuoze
en flitsende opening met
hier en daar jazzy
invloeden. In contrast
daarmee staat het
expressieve volgende
deel, Musica
Sacra, waarin het
gedragen hoofdthema
prachtig wordt uitgewerkt
- de instrumentatieis
hier buitengewoon
kleurrijk. Het
afsluitende deel,
Musica Alpina, is
ge nspireerd op het
afwisselende landschap
van Zwitserland. Het is
grillig van structuur en
vormt een waardige
afsluiting van dit fraaie
drieluik.

wooden toy soldier that
inspires the work
initially marches in a
fictitious parade before
gliding into a swift
waltz. Both sections are
based on the same melodic
material: the brisk
triple-time passage is in
fact a variation on the
parade theme. Switching

a number of surprising

enthralling work despite

Beide passages zijn

Solar
Flare, by Tyler Arcari,
depicts the huge
explosion on the Sun that
appears as a sudden
bright flash. The piece
incorporates a whirlwind
of mixed meters to?depict
this phenomenon. Arcari
showcases his fresh,
exciting, and well-scored
compositional style in
this piece. Solar Flare
makes for? an excellent
concert opener. A
solar
flare is a huge
explosion on the sun that
appears as a sudden
increase in brightness or
flash. Sometimes these
explosions push large
amounts of energy and
even parts of the sun
flying out into space.
These events can be so
powerful that they cause
events on Earth such as
auroras, as well as more
serious issues like
disrupting radio and
electronic instruments.
To our naked eye, these
dangerous explosions are
beautiful and quiet. The
celestial is a
fascinating place,
hopefully captured in
some small part by this
work. About the
Work:Solar
Flare began
as a piece with two
goals: to write a space
piece in 7/8 and to write
a teaching 7/8 space
piece. The piece uses a
2-2-3 pattern, so using
this in pre-performance
warm-ups might be
beneficial. The piece is
loosely based on a minor
second descending to a
minor third. This motif
is used at the onset of
the piece in the mallet
percussion and then again
in the woodwinds. The
melody presents itself at
m. 19 in the clarinets.
This melodic material is
varied and traded
throughout the instrument
groups until m.67.
Measures 6972 should be
treated as a transitional
fanfare to the new
material at m. 73.
Measures 99115 to the end
of the piece feature a
style similar to the
beginning that helps to
transition to m. 115,
which is the climax of
the work. An ostinato
pattern (2-2-3) is
presented with fragments
of the melody appearing
in the alto voices. This
momentum culminates in a
large, abrasive area at
m. 125 where the
suspension-resolution in
the brass and horn
melodic fragment need to
be the focus. This
momentum continuously
grows until the last note
where we resolve finally.
Care should be taken that
the ^ accent on the final

played heavy, and not
short. A solar

dangerous explosions are
beautiful and quiet. The
celestial is a
fascinating place,
hopefully captured in
some small part by this
work. About the Work:
Solar Flare began as a
piece with two goals: to
write a space piece in
7/8 and to write a
teaching 7/8 space piece.
The piece uses a 2-2-3
pattern, so using this in
pre-performance warm-ups
might be beneficial. The
piece is loosely based on
a minor second descending
to a minor third. This
motif is used at the
onset of the piece in the
mallet percussion and
then again in the
woodwinds. The melody
presents itself at m. 19
in the clarinets. This
melodic material is
varied and traded
throughout the instrument
groups until m.67.
Measures 69-72 should be
treated as a transitional
fanfare to the new
material at m. 73.
Measures 99-115 to the
end of the piece feature
a style similar to the
beginning that helps to
transition to m. 115,
which is the climax of
the work. An ostinato
pattern (2-2-3) is
presented with fragments
of the melody appearing
in the alto voices. This
momentum culminates in a
large, abrasive area at
m. 125 where the
suspension-resolution in
the brass and horn
melodic fragment need to
be the focus. This
momentum continuously
grows until the last note
where we resolve finally.
Care should be taken that
the ^ accent on the final
note is one meant to be
played heavy, and not
short. A solar flare
is a huge explosion on
the sun that appears as a
sudden increase in
brightness or flash.
Sometimes these
explosions push large
amounts of energy and
even parts of the sun
flying out into space.
These events can be so
powerful that they cause
events on Earth such as
auroras, as well as more
serious issues like
disrupting radio and
electronic instruments.

This suite with
a four-part
instrumentation is
comprised of three
cheerful, imaginative
movements: firstly
Yellow Duck
Shuffle, a bluesy,
swinging section; next
comes Purple Panda
Polka, a lively,
modern polka in which a
funny dancing pair of
pandas take centre stage;
and finally the third
movement entitled Pink
Donkey Boogie is a
gentle boogie-woogie. The
musical motifs are played
in all four parts giving
every instrumentalist a
chance to take the
lead.
Deze
vierstemmige suite
bestaat uit drie vrolijke
delen die stuk voor stuk
tot de verbeelding
spreken. De Yellow
Duck Shuffle is een
swingend, bluesachtig
deel waarin het ritmische
gekwaak van een jong
eendje te horen is. De
Purple Panda Polka
is een snelle, moderne
polka waarin een grappige
paarse pandabeer al
dansend de hoofdrol
speelt. Het derde deel,
Pink Donkey
Boogie, is een
rustige boogiewoogie met
als terugkerend motief
het herkenbare
‘ia’ van een
swingende ezel. In de
gehele suite lopen de
melodische thema’s
door alle vier de stemmen
heen, zodat elke partij
op haar beurt de
boventoon
voert.
Diese
vierstimmige Suite
besteht aus drei
fröhlichen,
fantasieanregenden
Sätzen: Auf den
Yellow Duck
Shuffle, einen
swingender, bluesartigen
Satz, folgt die Purple
Panda Polka, eine
flotte, moderne Polka, in
der ein drolliges,
tanzendes
Panda-Pärchen die
Hauptrolle spielt. Der
dritte Satz mit dem Titel
Pink Donkey Boogie
ist ein ruhiger Boogie
Woogie. Die musikalischen
Themen wechseln durch
alle vier Stimmen durch,
sodass jede Stimme einmal
führen
darf.
Yell
ow Duck Shuffle, un
movimento in stile swing
e blues, e una polka
molto moderna (Purple
Panda Polka), sono i
primi due movimenti di
questa suite gioiosa,
perfetta per stimolare la
fantasia. Il terzo
movimento, Pink Donkey
Boogie è un
tranquillo boogie woogie.
I temi musicali sono
presenti in tutte quattro
le voci previste in
questo brano, così da
permettere a tutto
l’organico di
esibirsi come
solista.

This work is
based on an old folksong
from Jeju, an island off
the coast of South Korea.
The song tells of the
legend of the origins of
the island through a
volcano - the embodiment
of a goddess. Along with
various treatments of the
folksong melody, Jacob de
Haan weaves into his work
a repeating majestic
theme to honor the
goddess and powerful
robust passages
symbolizing the powerful
forces of nature that
brought forth the
island.

Venture is
an exciting
overture-style
composition for concert
band. A venture is an
undertaking involving
uncertainty and the
possibility of risk or
danger. The music
reflects this definition
and has many of the
qualities of great film
music. Powerful when
needed and sensitive at
times to provide
contrast, the cumulative
result is a dramatic
addition to concert band
literature. One of Sean
O'Loughlin's best to
date!
