Thi s overture, called Sinfonia, is without doubt one of the best original works for concert band to emerge from the 19th century. It is characterised by its fluid spontaneity as well as its rich texture. This arrangement off ers bands the opportunity to perform a work of high artistic value, which otherwise would be forgotten.

Deze ouverture met de titel Sinfonia is zonder twijfel een van de beste oorspronkelijke 19e-eeuwse werken voor blaasorkest. De componist Ponchielli werkte jarenlang als dirigent in Cremona en Piacenza (waar hij een blaasorkest leidde). Zijn oeuvre, dat wordt bewaard in de Nationale Bibliotheek in Cremona, omvat ongeveer 150 originele partituren, waaronder composities en fantasieen die zijn gebaseerd op lyrische opera's van belangrijke componisten uit zijn tijd. De Sinfonia per banda uit 1872 is een volwassen werk waarin het grote vakmanschap van Ponchielli goed tot zijn recht komt. Diese mit Sinfonia betitelte Ouvertüre ist zweifellos eines der besten originalen Werke für Blasorchester aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Sie ist gepragt von flüssiger Spontaneitat und Einfallsreichtum. Diese Bearbeitung von Franco Cesarini bietet modernen Blasorchestern die Chance, ein Werk von hohem künstlerischem Wert aufzuführen, das sonst in Vergessenheit geraten ware.

Cette ouverture du compositeur italien Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) est une des oeuvres majeures du repertoire pour Orchestre a Vent du XIXe siecle. Sinfonia per Banda (Ouverture pour Orchestre a Vent - 1872), oeuvre de maturite, revele l'immense talent du compositeur. Elle se caracterise par un style fluide et spontane, et une texture riche. En readaptant cette oeuvre, Franco Cesarini offre aux Orchestres a Vent d'aujourd'hui l'opportunite de faire revivre une composition quelque peu oubliee.

Essa si sviluppa con scorrevole spontaneita e ricchezza d'invenzione ed e una delle migliori opere per fiati di Ponchielli. L'arrangiamento di Franco Cesarini ha l'obiettivo di restituire alle orchestre di fiati contemporanee un'opera di notevole pregio artistico, altrimenti destinata ad essere dimenticata.

La Gioconda, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, is the most successful theatrical work by Amilcare Ponchielli (1844-1886). In this work there are two dance pieces: the Furlana at the conclusion of the 1st act and the Danza delle ore in the 3rd act. The Dance of the Hours has a precise choreographic outline: it is a masked ball which includes the “hours” of dawn, day, evening and night successively, and ends with a wild finale of galop. The latter is a sort of fast polka, in binary rhythm and unbridled pace. A French variant of it is the can-can. The finale in galop time of the Dance of the Hours recalls certain playful dances by the composer Jacques Offenbach, such as the famous Can-can that concludes the overture of the operetta Orphée au enfers.
