ch. The
Soldier’s Wife
is a short and simple
piece commissioned by the
Singapore Ministry of
Education. It was
originally intended as a
compulsory piece for the
2012 Singapore Youth
Festival. Because many
school bands in Singapore
are incomplete, the
composer was specifically
asked to create a work
that could equally be
played by a limited
ensemble—which
explains various doubled
and optional parts. The
warm tones of a melodic
passage open this short
work: the wife of the
wooden soldier sings a
kind of lullaby. This
lyrical section is
followed by a more
powerful part which is,
however, based on the
same melodic material.
The rhythm, syncopated at
times, infuses
thissection with a
particular energy. The
harmony, too, has some
surprising
turns—and we must
never lose sight of the
restrictions imposed by
the limited level of
difficulty of the piece.
Although the work begins
softly and sweetly, much
more ‘feminine
energy’ is
projected by the close.
The
Soldier’s Wife
is een kort en eenvoudig
werkje dat is geschreven
in opdracht van het
Singaporese ministerie
van Onderwijs. Het was
aanvankelijk bedoeld als
verplicht werk voor het
Singapore Youth Festival
2012. Omdat
veelschoolorkesten in
Singapore een onvolledige
bezetting hebben, kreeg
de componist het
nadrukkelijke verzoek om
het werk zo vorm te geven
dat het ook met een
beperkt ensemble
uitgevoerd kan worden:
dat verklaart een aantal
verdubbelingenen
instrumenten ad
libitum.Een warme,
melodische passage opent
dit korte werkje: de
vrouw van het - houten -
soldaatje zingt als het
ware een wiegeliedje.
Nadat dit lyrische deel
is afgerond, volgt een
energieker gedeeltedat
qua melodisch materiaal
op dezelfde bouwstenen is
gebaseerd. De hier en
daar gesyncopeerde
ritmiek verleent dit deel
een bijzondere energie,
en ook harmonisch zijn er
een paar verrassende
wendingen - waarbij
rekening is gehoudenmet
de beperkingen die
verbonden zijn aan werken
voor dit muzikale niveau.
Begon het werkje zacht en
liefelijk, aan het slot
is er heel wat meer
‘girl power’
voelbaar!

Werk, das im Auftrag des

wurde. Es war zunächst
als Pflichtstück

Schulblasorchester in
Singapur unvollständig
besetzt sind, bat man den
Komponisten
ausdrücklich, das Werk
so zu gestalten, dass es
auch mit einem begrenzten
Ensemble gespielt werden
könne: Dies erklärt
einige Verdopplungen und
optionale Instrumente.
Eine warm klingende,
melodische Passage
eröffnet dieses kurze
Werk: Die Frau des -
hölzernen- Soldaten
singt eine Art
Wiegenlied. Nach diesem
lyrischen Abschnitt folgt
ein kraftvollerer Teil,
der aber aufdemselben
melodischen Material
aufbaut. Der hier und da
synkopierte Rhythmus
verleiht diesem Teil eine
besondere Energie und
auch harmonisch gibt es
einige überraschende
Wendungen - wobei immer
an die auferlegten
Beschränkungen durch

gedacht werden muss. Ist
das Werk zu Beginn noch
leise und lieblich, ist
zum Schluss doch schon
wesentlich mehr weibliche
Energie“
spürbar...!
The
Soldier’s Wife
(L’épouse du

courte et simple
commandée par le
Ministère singapourien
de l'Education. Cette
œuvre a été
initialement écrite
comme pièce imposée
pour le Festival de la
Jeunesse se déroulant
Singapour en 2012. Comme
de nombreuses formations
scolaires présentent
quelques lacunes au
niveau de certains
pupitres, Jan van der
Roost a été
sollicité afin de
composer une œuvre
qui pourrait également
être jouée par une
formation incomplète -
ce qui explique le
doublement de certaines
parties et les voix
optionnelles.Cette
œuvre concise
débute par une
chaleureuse et expressive
mélodie : la femme du
soldat chante une sorte
deberceuse. Ce passage
lyrique est suivi
d’une partie plus
puissante qui est,
cependant, basée sur
le même matériel
thématique. Le rythme,
parfois syncopé,
insuffle cette partie de
l’œuvre une
énergie toute
particulière. La trame
harmonique, elle aussi,
subit quelques
surprenantes contorsions
sans jamais dépasser
les limites imposées
par le degré de
difficulté de la
pièce. Cette
composition commence
doucement et gentiment,
et se termine par un
motif empreint
d’un dynamisme
singulièrement
féminin.
“Guarda,

inizia in modo calmo e
dolce per poi trovare
un’energia
tipicamente femminile
verso il finale. The

This quiet

composers own band: Brass
Band Midden Brabant
(Belgium). The direct
cause was a visit to the
beautiful cathedral of
theEnglish city
Canterbury, in which so
many fine compositions
sounded throughout the
centuries. Later on, Jan
Van der Roost rescored
this piece for symphonic
wind band, exploring the
full richness of colours
of this formation.
Besides solo phrases
forseveral instruments,
there are some massive
tutti passages making the
wind orchestra sound like
a majestic organ. By the
way: an ad libitum organ
part adds an extra
richness, colour and
power to this piece,
making it sound even more
broad
andgrand.

Grandjean, conductor -
for a special concert
featuring Steven Mead as
guest soloist. Together
they gave the world
premiere on 28th April
2012 in the town theatre
of Idar-Oberstein.The
commission is a highlight
in the 30-year friendship
between composer and
soloist, which has
included many mutual CD
projects and concerts
and, now, a concerto.
Sparke had Steven
Mead’s special
euphonium sound in his
head throughout the
composition process and
made free use of the
variety of styles which
the world-renowned
virtuoso has made his own
during his highly
successful solo
career.The village
ofMörschied lies to
the west of Frankfurt am
Main in the area known as
the German Road of
Precious Stones, which is
famous for its thriving
gem industry. Because of
this it was decided to
give the commission a
local connection by
choosing the title,
Diamond Concerto.
Each of the three
movements is named after
a famous diamond:1 EARTH
STARis rather stern in
mood, opening with a free
fantasy for the soloist
over a static chord from
the band. This leads to
an Allegro Moderato in
minor mode where small
motives are gradually
repeated and developed by
both band and soloist.2
OCEAN DREAMuses a varied
quote from the
composer’s
Music for Battle
Creek, including a
melting slow melody that
was originally written
with Steven Mead in
mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas
written, at Steven
Mead’s suggestion,
in bebop style and takes
the form of a jazz waltz.
The quasi-improvisatory
central section features
a call-and-response
passage for the soloist
and upper
woodwinds.Soloist:

drie delen is genoemd

deel is tamelijk sober
van sfeer. Het opent met
een vrije fantasie van de
solist over een statisch
akkoord in het orkest.
Dan volgt een allegro
moderato in mineur, met
kleine motieven die
geleidelijk worden
herhaald en uitgewerkt
door zowel het orkest als
de solist.2 OCEAN

citaat van
Sparke’s werk
Music for Battle

gebracht, met een
vloeiende, langzame
melodie die van oorsprong
werd geschreven met het
spel van Steven Mead in

mondialement connu a
adoptés au cours de sa
brillante carrière de
soliste.Le village de
Mörschied se trouve
l’ouest de
Francfort-sur-le-Main,
dans la région
surnommée Route
allemande des pierres
précieuses,
célèbre pour son
industrie de la
joaillerie. C’est
pourquoi le compositeur a
décidé de saluer
cette province en
intitulant son œuvre
Diamond Concerto.
Les trois mouvements sont
chacun nommés
d’après un
diamant célèbre :1
EARTH STARDe caractère
plutôt sérieux, ce
mouvement débute avec
une fantaisie libre pour
le soliste sur un accord
statique de
l’orchestre. Vient
ensuite un Allegro
Moderato en mode mineur
où de courts motifs
sont progressivement
répétés et
développés par
l’orchestre et le
soliste.2 OCEAN
DREAML’on pourra
entendre ici une variante
d’un extrait de
Music for Battle
Creek, incluant une
mélodie lente et
émouvante, que le
compositeur écrivit
alors dans
l’optique
d’une future
interprétation
réalisée par Steven
Mead.3 BLUE HEARTSuivant
l’idée de
Steven Mead, ce mouvement
est écrit dans un
style de be-bop et prend
la forme d’une
valse jazzy. La partie
centrale,
quasi-improvisée,
comprend un passage
d’appel et
réponse entre le
soliste et les
bois.Soliste:

When the band reaches its

rechtopstaande stenen
staat al zo’n 3500
jaar lang in het
zuidwesten van Engeland.
In dit werk zijn
sfeerbeelden omgezet in
muziek. Hoewel er geen
concreet verhaal aan ten
grondslag ligt en er
geenduidelijk scenario is
gebruikt, verklankt deze
compositie het mysterie
en de grootsheid van het
eeuwenoude geheimzinnige
monument Stonehenge op
voortreffelijke
wijze.
Im
Südwesten Englands
steht seit fast 3500
Jahren ein Ring riesiger
Steine: Stonehenge. Das
gleichnamige Werk von Jan
Van der Roost bringt
mystische Stimmungen und
Bilder rund um die alte
Stätte auf
musikalische Weise zum
Klingen. Das Hauptmotiv
aus fünf Tönen
zieht sich durch das
gesamte Werk und
symbolisiert den
hufeisenförmigen
inneren Ring des riesigen
Steinkreises. Später
gemahnen fünf
Vokalsolisten sowie ein
gesungener Druiden- und
Mönchs-Chor an Stimmen
aus einer fremden Welt.
Stonehenges
ungelüftetes Geheimnis
schlug den Komponisten in
seinen Bann und
inspirierte ihn zu diesem
ebenso unwiderstehlichen
Werk, das Tohru Takahashi
nun für Blasorchester
transkribierte.
Da
ns le sud-ouest de
l’Angleterre, se
dresse, depuis plus de 3
500 ans, un
impressionnant cercle de
blocs de grès. En
dépit de multiples
recherches et calculs
scientifiques, on ne
connaît toujours pas
la signification exacte
de ce site. Au fil des
siècles, de nombreuses
suppositions et
spéculations ont
été avancées
quant la fonction de
Stonehenge, lieu de
cérémonies
religieuses, lieu de
rituels et
d’adoration, mais
aucune de ces
hypothèses n’a
pu être
démontrée de
façon probante ce
jour. Actuellement, on
s’accorde penser
que Stonehenge est un
calendrier géant. La
disposition
particulière des blocs
permet d’observer
le lever du soleil ou le
coucher de la lune, de
prédire lessolstices
d’été et
d’hiver, de
déterminer les
positions de la lune
travers les diagonales,
etc. En résumé, ce
mystérieux monument de
pierre permet
d’observer les
changements de
saison.Stonehenge
est une mise en musique
d’images et
d’impressions
atmosphériques ; un
paysage sonore dont la
trame ne suit aucun
scénario précis,
mais dont les images sont
réelles. $314.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

Philip Harper had asked
for a 'Concerto for Band'
to fully exploit his
outstanding band of
virtuosi, and composer
Philip Sparke created a
one-movement work with
contiguous sections,
first featuring horns and
flugel, then trombones
followed by cornets and a
slower central section
for percussion and
baritones, euphonium
andbasses.The piece is
abstract in nature,
without a specific
programme, and the title
merely reflects the fact
that the piece was begun
on January 2nd 2013, the
day of Earth's perihelion
- the point in its orbit
when it is closest to the
sun. It could also be
argued that the piece
weaves between moments of
brilliant optimism and
dark shadow, both of
which can be the result
of bright sunshine.
