Roya
l Coronation Dances is
the first sequel to the
Fanfare Ode & Festival,
both being settings of
dance music originally
arranged by Gervaise in
the mid 16th-century (the
next sequel is The
Renaissance Fair, which
uses music of Susato and
Praetorius). Fanfare Ode
& Festival has been
performed by many tens of
thousands of students,
both in high school and
junior high school. I
have heard that some of
them are amazed that the
music they are playing
was first played and
danced to over 400 years
ago. Some students tend
to think that music
started with Handel and
his Messiah to be
followed by Beethoven and
his Fifth Symphony, with
naught in between or
before of consequence.
Although Royal Coronation
Dances is derived from
the same source as
Fanfare Ode & Festival,
they are treated in
different ways. I
envisioned this new suite
programmatically -- hence
the descriptive movement
titles, which I imagined
to be various dances
actually used at some
long-ago coronation. The
first movement depicts
the guests, both noble
and common, flanked by
flag and banner bearers,
arriving at the palace to
view the majestic event.
They are festive, their
flags swirling the air,
their cloaks brightly
colored. In the second
movement, the queen in
stately measure moves to
take her place on the
throne as leader and
protector of the realm.
In the third movement,
the jesters of the court
entertain the guests with
wild games of sport.
Musically, there are
interesting sonorities to
recreate. Very special
attention should be given
to the tambourine/tenor
drum part in the first
movement. Their lively
rhythms give the movement
its power. Therefore they
should be played as
distinctly and
brilliantly as possible.
The xylophone and
glockenspiel add clarity,
but must not be allowed
to dominate. Observe
especially the differing
dynamics; the intent is
to allow much buzzing
bass to penetrate. The
small drum (starting at
meas. 29) should be
played expressively, with
attention to the notated
articulations, with the
brass light and detached,
especially in a lively
auditorium. It is of some
further interest that the
first dance is extremely
modal. The original is
clearly in G mixolydian
mode (scale:
G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G).
However, other editors
might put in F-sharps in
many places (changing the
piece almost to G major),
in the belief that such
ficta would have been
automatically put in by
the 16th-century
performers as they
played. I doubt it. I
have not only eschewed
these within the work,
but even at the cadences.
So this arrangement is
most distinctly modal
(listen to the F-naturals
in meas. 22 and 23, for
instance), with all the
part-writing as Gervaise
wrote it. In the second
movement, be careful that
things do not become too
glued together. In the
16th century this music
might have been played by
a consort of recorders,
instruments very light of
touch and sensitive to
articulation. Concert
band can easily sound
heavy, and although this
movement has been scored
for tutti band, it must
not sound it. It is
essential, therefore,
that you hear all the
instruments, with none
predominating. Only when
each timbre can be heard
separately and
simultaneously will the
best blend occur, and
consequently the greatest
transparency. So aim for
a transparent, spacious
tutti sound in this
movement. Especially have
the flutes, who do this
so well, articulate
rather sharply, so as to
produce a chiffing sound,
and do not allow the
quarter-notes to become
too tied together in the
entire band. The entrance
of the drums (first
tenor, then bass) are
events and as such should
be audible. Incidentally,
this movement begins in F
Major and ends in D
Minor: They really didn't
care so much about those
things then. The third
movement (one friend has
remarked that it is the
most Margolisian of the
bunch, but actually I am
just getting subtler, I
hope) again relies upon
the percussion (and the
scoring) to make its
points. Xylophone in this
movement is meant to be
distinctly audible.
Therefore, be especially
sure that the xylophone
player is secure in the
part, and also that the
tambourine and toms sound
good. This movement must
fly or it will sink, so
rev up the band and
conduct it in 1 for this
mixolydian jesting. I
suppose the wildly
unrelated keys (clarinets
and then brass at the
end) would be a good
16th-century joke, but to
us, our
put-up-the-chorus-a-half-
step ears readily accept
such shenanigans.

Following a
celebrated series of wind
ensemble tone poems about
national parks in the
American West, Dan
Welcher’s Upriver
celebrates the Lewis &
Clark Expedition from the
Missouri River to
Oregon’s Columbia
Gorge, following the
Louisiana Purchase of
1803. Welcher’s
imaginative textures and
inventiveness are freshly
modern, evoking our
American heritage,
including references to
Shenandoah and other folk
songs known to have been
sung on the expedition.
For advanced players.
Duration:
14’. In 1803,
President Thomas
Jefferson sent Meriwether
Lewis and William
Clark’s Corps of
Discovery to find a water
route to the Pacific and
explore the uncharted
West. He believed woolly
mammoths, erupting
volcanoes, and mountains
of pure salt awaited
them. What they found was
no less mind-boggling:
some 300 species unknown
to science, nearly 50
Indian tribes, and the
Rockies.Ihave been a
student of the Lewis and
Clark expedition, which
Thomas Jefferson called
the “Voyage of
Discovery,†for as
long as I can remember.
This astonishing journey,
lasting more than
two-and-a-half years,
began and ended in St.
Louis, Missouri —
and took the travelers up
more than a few rivers in
their quest to find the
Northwest Passage to the
Pacific Ocean. In an age
without speedy
communication, this was
akin to space travel out
of radio range in our own
time: no one knew if,
indeed, the party had
even survived the voyage
for more than a year.
Most of them were
soldiers. A few were
French-Canadian voyageurs
— hired trappers
and explorers, who were
fluent in French (spoken
extensively in the
region, due to earlier
explorers from France)
and in some of the Indian
languages they might
encounter. One of the
voyageurs, a man named
Pierre Cruzatte, also
happened to be a
better-than-average
fiddle player. In many
respects, the travelers
were completely on their
own for supplies and
survival, yet,
incredibly, only one of
them died during the
voyage. Jefferson had
outfitted them with food,
weapons, medicine, and
clothing — and
along with other
trinkets, a box of 200
jaw harps to be used in
trading with the Indians.
Their trip was long,
perilous to the point of
near catastrophe, and
arduous. The dream of a
Northwest Passage proved
ephemeral, but the
northwestern quarter of
the continent had finally
been explored, mapped,
and described to an
anxious world. When the
party returned to St.
Louis in 1806, and with
the Louisiana Purchase
now part of the United
States, they were greeted
as national heroes.Ihave
written a sizeable number
of works for wind
ensemble that draw their
inspiration from the
monumental spaces found
in the American West.
Four of them (Arches, The
Yellowstone Fires,
Glacier, and Zion) take
their names, and in large
part their being, from
actual national parks in
Utah, Wyoming, and
Montana. But Upriver,
although it found its
voice (and its finale) in
the magnificent Columbia
Gorge in Oregon, is about
a much larger region.
This piece, like its
brother works about the
national parks,
doesn’t try to
tell a story. Instead, it
captures the flavor of a
certain time, and of a
grand adventure. Cast in
one continuous movement
and lasting close to
fourteen minutes, the
piece falls into several
subsections, each with
its own heading: The
Dream (in which
Jefferson’s vision
of a vast expanse of
western land is opened);
The Promise, a chorale
that re-appears several
times in the course of
the piece and represents
the seriousness of the
presidential mission; The
River; The Voyageurs; The
River II ; Death and
Disappointment; Return to
the Voyage; and The River
III .The music includes
several quoted melodies,
one of which is familiar
to everyone as the
ultimate “river
song,†and which
becomes the
through-stream of the
work. All of the quoted
tunes were either sung by
the men on the voyage, or
played by
Cruzatte’s fiddle.
From various journals and
diaries, we know the men
found enjoyment and
solace in music, and
almost every night
encampment had at least a
bit of music in it. In
addition to Cruzatte,
there were two other
members of the party who
played the fiddle, and
others made do with
singing, or playing upon
sticks, bones, the
ever-present jaw harps,
and boat horns. From
Lewis’ journals, I
found all the tunes used
in Upriver: Shenandoah
(still popular after more
than 200 years),
V’la bon vent,
Soldier’s Joy,
Johnny Has Gone for a
Soldier, Come Ye Sinners
Poor and Needy (a hymn
sung to the tune
“Beech
Springâ€) and
Fisher’s Hornpipe.
The work follows an
emotional journey: not
necessarily step-by-step
with the Voyage of
Discovery heroes, but a
kind of grand arch.
Beginning in the mists of
history and myth,
traversing peaks and
valleys both real and
emotional (and a solemn
funeral scene), finding
help from native people,
and recalling their zeal
upon finding the one
great river that will, in
fact, take them to the
Pacific. When the men
finally roar through the
Columbia Gorge in their
boats (a feat that even
the Indians had not
attempted), the
magnificent river
combines its theme with
the chorale of
Jefferson’s
Promise. The Dream is
fulfilled: not quite the
one Jefferson had
imagined (there is no
navigable water passage
from the Missouri to the
Pacific), but the dream
of a continental
destiny.

gelungene Mischung aus
Balladen und
Rocksongs!
Nato
nel 1959 in Canada, Bryan
Adams è uno dei
cantanti rock più
famosi dei nostri tempi.
La sua voce rauca,
accompagnata al talento
di interpretare heavy
rock accanto ad
espressive ballate, ha
contribuito alla sua
fama. Wolfgang
Wössner, grande fan di
Bryan Adams, ha
selezionato alcune delle
più belle canzoni
dell’artista
canadese arrangiandole
per banda. Questo medley
include i titoli
seguenti: Everything I
do, I Do it for You dal
film Robin Hood, The Best
of Me, Please Forgive Me
e Summer of

The habanera is
a dance from the
beginning of the 19th
century that has been the
subject of many humorous
and ironic poems. One of
the more famous habaneras
is La Paloma (The Dove),
composed about 1860 by
Spaniard Sebastien
Yradier (1809-1865). This
song has since been
popular globally and has
been performed by many
artists including Dean
Martin, Elvis Presley,
Bill Ramsey, Mireille
Mathieu and many more. A
fantastic opportunity to
immerse yourself in the
seduction and soft
nostalgia of La
Paloma.

I n 1803,
President Thomas
Jefferson sent Meriwether
Lewis and William Clarks
Corps of Discovery to
find a water route to the
Pacific and explore the
uncharted West. He
believed woolly mammoths,
erupting volcanoes, and
mountains of pure salt
awaited them. What they
found was no less
mind-boggling: some 300
species unknown to
science, nearly 50 Indian
tribes, and the Rockies.
I have been a student of
the Lewis and Clark
expedition, which Thomas
Jefferson called the
Voyage of Discovery, for
as long as I can
remember. This
astonishing journey,
lasting more than
two-and-a-half years,
began and ended in St.
Louis, Missouri and took
the travelers up more
than a few rivers in
their quest to find the
Northwest Passage to the
Pacific Ocean. In an age
without speedy
communication, this was
akin to space travel out
of radio range in our own
time: no one knew if,
indeed, the party had
even survived the voyage
for more than a year.
Most of them were
soldiers. A few were
French-Canadian voyageurs
hired trappers and
explorers, who were
fluent in French (spoken
extensively in the
region, due to earlier
explorers from France)
and in some of the Indian
languages they might
encounter. One of the
voyageurs, a man named
Pierre Cruzatte, also
happened to be a
better-than-average
fiddle player. In many
respects, the travelers
were completely on their
own for supplies and
survival, yet,
incredibly, only one of
them died during the
voyage. Jefferson had
outfitted them with food,
weapons, medicine, and
clothing and along with
other trinkets, a box of
200 jaw harps to be used
in trading with the
Indians. Their trip was
long, perilous to the
point of near
catastrophe, and arduous.
The dream of a Northwest
Passage proved ephemeral,
but the northwestern
quarter of the continent
had finally been
explored, mapped, and
described to an anxious
world. When the party
returned to St. Louis in
1806, and with the
Louisiana Purchase now
part of the United
States, they were greeted
as national heroes. I
have written a sizeable
number of works for wind
ensemble that draw their
inspiration from the
monumental spaces found
in the American West.
Four of them (Arches, The
Yellowstone Fires,
Glacier, and Zion) take
their names, and in large
part their being, from
actual national parks in
Utah, Wyoming, and
Montana. But Upriver,
although it found its
voice (and its finale) in
the magnificent Columbia
Gorge in Oregon, is about
a much larger region.
This piece, like its
brother works about the
national parks, doesnt
try to tell a story.
Instead, it captures the
flavor of a certain time,
and of a grand adventure.
Cast in one continuous
movement and lasting
close to fourteen
minutes, the piece falls
into several subsections,
each with its own
heading: The Dream (in
which Jeffersons vision
of a vast expanse of
western land is opened);
The Promise, a chorale
that re-appears several
times in the course of
the piece and represents
the seriousness of the
presidential mission; The
River; The Voyageurs; The
River II ; Death and
Disappointment; Return to
the Voyage; and The River
III . The music includes
several quoted melodies,
one of which is familiar
to everyone as the
ultimate river song, and
which becomes the
through-stream of the
work. All of the quoted
tunes were either sung by
the men on the voyage, or
played by Cruzattes
fiddle. From various
journals and diaries, we
know the men found
enjoyment and solace in
music, and almost every
night encampment had at
least a bit of music in
it. In addition to
Cruzatte, there were two
other members of the
party who played the
fiddle, and others made
do with singing, or
playing upon sticks,
bones, the ever-present
jaw harps, and boat
horns. From Lewis
journals, I found all the
tunes used in Upriver:
Shenandoah (still popular
after more than 200
years), Vla bon vent,
Soldiers Joy, Johnny Has
Gone for a Soldier, Come
Ye Sinners Poor and Needy
(a hymn sung to the tune
Beech Spring) and Fishers
Hornpipe. The work
follows an emotional
journey: not necessarily
step-by-step with the
Voyage of Discovery
heroes, but a kind of
grand arch. Beginning in
the mists of history and
myth, traversing peaks
and valleys both real and
emotional (and a solemn
funeral scene), finding
help from native people,
and recalling their zeal
upon finding the one
great river that will, in
fact, take them to the
Pacific. When the men
finally roar through the
Columbia Gorge in their
boats (a feat that even
the Indians had not
attempted), the
magnificent river
combines its theme with
the chorale of Jeffersons
Promise. The Dream is
fulfilled: not quite the
one Jefferson had
imagined (there is no
navigable water passage
from the Missouri to the
Pacific), but the dream
of a continental
destiny.

Zion is the
third and final
installment of a series
of works for Wind
Ensemble inspired by
national parks in the
western United States,
collectively called Three
Places in the West. As in
the other two works (The
Yellowstone Fires and
Arches), it is my
intention to convey more
an impression of the
feelings I've had in Zion
National Park in Utah
than an attempt at
pictorial description.
Zion is a place with
unrivalled natural
grandeur, being a sort of
huge box canyon in which
the traveler is
constantly overwhelmed by
towering rock walls on
every side of him -- but
it is also a place with a
human history, having
been inhabited by several
tribes of native
Americans before the
arrival of the Mormon
settlers in the mid-19th
century. By the time the
Mormons reached Utah,
they had been driven all
the way from New York
State through Ohio and,
with tragic losses,
through Missouri. They
saw Utah in general as a
place nobody wanted, but
they were nonetheless
determined to keep it to
themselves. Although Zion
Canyon was never a Mormon
Stronghold, the people
who reached it and
claimed it (and gave it
its present name) had
been through extreme
trials. It is the
religious fervor of these
persecuted people that I
was able to draw upon in
creating Zion as a piece
of music. There are two
quoted hymns in the work:
Zion's Walls (which Aaron
Copland adapted to his
own purposes in both is
Old American Songs and
the opera The Tender
Land) and Zion's
Security, which I found
in the same volume in
which Copland found
Zion's Walls -- that
inexhaustible storehouse
of 19th-century hymnody
called The Sacred Harp.
My work opens with a
three-verse setting of
Zion's Security, a stern
tune in F-sharp minor
which is full of resolve.
(The words of this hymn
are resolute and strong,
rallying the faithful to
be firm, and describing
the city of our God they
hope to establish). This
melody alternates with a
fanfare tune, whose
origins will be revealed
in later music, until the
second half of the piece
begins: a driving
rhythmic ostinato based
on a 3/4-4/4 alternating
meter scheme. This pauses
at its height to restate
Zion's Security one more
time, in a rather obscure
setting surrounded by
freely shifting patterns
in the flutes, clarinets,
and percussion -- until
the sun warms the ground
sufficiently for the
second hymn to appear.
Zion's Walls is set in
7/8, unlike Copland's
9/8-6/8 meters (the
original is quite
strange, and doesn't
really fit any constant
meter), and is introduced
by a warm horn solo. The
two hymns vie for
attention from here to
the end of the piece,
with the glowingly
optimistic Zion's Walls
finally achieving
prominence. The work ends
with a sense of triumph
and unbreakable spirit.
Zion was commissioned in
1994 by the wind
ensembles of the
University of Texas at
Arlington, the University
of Texas at Austin, and
the University of
Oklahoma. It is dedicated
to the memory of Aaron
Copland.

movement begins in a
reflective mood. As I
thought about Ruby
Diamond Hall, where I had
performed as a teenager,
I remembered people,
particularly many mentors
with whom I have
performed here, who are
gone, but whose gifts and
spirits are still with
us. The theater has a
beautiful tradition of
leaving one light bulb
burning all night long
for the spirits of the
actors who have graced
that stage. While I
wanted my 2nd movement to
acknowledge that sense of
continuity of past and
present, the piece ends
in celebration of the
new. Perhaps all artists
feel a strong connection
with the past, but we
work in and for the
present and we build for
the future. Fanfare;

I Love the
207 was composed in
February 2010 for a
commission by Osumi
Symphonic Band in Kyoto.
It was first performed on
25 April 2010 by Osumi
Symphonic Band, conducted
by Masanori Ozaki. This
piece begins with an
introduction to present
the instruments, followed
by a light scherzo. The
title is an affectionate
reference to the commuter
rail 207 series of the
West Japan Railway
Company. When the band
started their activity,
the 207 series trains
began running through the
fields next to the
building where they
practice. The composer
hopes that the trains
continue to run and bring
smiles to people’s
faces.

première, onder

begint met een

door een licht scherzo.
De titel verwijst naar de
forenzentrein van het
type 207 van de West

Toen het orkest begon,
begonnen ook de treinen
uit de207-serie door de
velden te rijden naast
het gebouw waar wordt
gerepeteerd. De componist
hoopt dat de treinen
zullen blijven rijden tot
tevredenheid van de
mensen die er gebruik van
maken.

The
title is a play on words,
but the composer had his
own ulterior motives in
mind when composing this
piece. He wanted a piece
that was fun to play, but
that helped developing
musicians work on their
rhythmic skills. Matt
Putnam uses the feel of
action film soundtracks
to create the mood of
this interesting new
piece. Interesting
grooves in the percussion
throughout add to the
piece’s feel of
mystery and thrill. To
understand my thoughts in
writing this piece, I
thought it best to define
the two ideas that give
the piece its title:
ulterior motives and
musical motifs. Ulterior
motives occur when you
believe that a person is
doing something for some
unknown or hidden reason.
Often, they are used in
action films or
literature to increase
the drama and tension of
the story. Musically, a
motif is a short rhythmic
and/or melodic idea. When
I wrote this piece, I
must confess that I had
my own ulterior motives:
I wanted to create a
piece that was fun to
play, but I also wanted a
piece that would help
students develop their
rhythmic counting skills.
In this piece, I use a
motif of a two
eighth-note pattern which
jumps from section to
section to help me
achieve my ulterior
motive.Mimicking the mood
of action films whose
characters often have
ulterior motives, the
mood of the piece is
suspenseful and exciting
as the motif jumps from
section to section
throughout the ensemble.
The motif keeps you
guessing as it occurs on
all four different beats
of the measure sometimes
ascending, sometimes
descending, and occurs
sometimes in the interval
of a second and sometimes
the interval of a third.
Interesting grooves in
the percussion throughout
add to the piece’s
feel of mystery and
thrill.I have no ulterior
motives when I say that I
hope you enjoy playing
Ulterior Motifs.
