Anchorage Virtuoso piece,
the dramatic first
movement opens with a
Bold statement followed
by the beautiful love
theme. It reaches up to
the Cry of the Heart,
then everything ruptures
and crashes. Now the
trombonist must rebuild
and gain strength through
dramatic cadenzas until
reaching the
recapitulation where the
opening Bold melody is
transformed into a
majestic march in 3/4
time. The love theme
returns, and the movement
ends in triumph. The
second movement is a
setting of the famous
Japanese folksong, Red
Dragonfly. The trombonist
and pianist play the
lovely song amidst the
sound of fluttering wings
that appear and disappear
like memories of the
heart. Thank you to the
Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai
Foundation for permission
to use the melody in this
trombone sonata. A solo
glissando opens the third
movement in American folk
dance style with tongue
in cheek and twinkle in
both eyes. The subsequent
variations include a
perfect triple canon, a
taste of New Orleans
jazz, and a dramatic
augmentation which spills
into a flashback of the
first movement’s
love theme. This melts
away and we recapture a
glimpse of the Red
Dragonfly melody, this
time growing to the
Triumphant restatement of
the first
movement’s main
theme. And finally, the
exuberant coda drives to
a spectacular ending.

Modelled on Johannes
Brahmsâ?? famous
Hungarian Dances,
although in contrast to
Brahmsâ?? work,
Dvorák used no
original melodies. Wil
van der Beek has arranged
No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance,
as well as No. 8, a
passionate, exuberant
furiant in 3/4.
In 1878 schreef
Dvoøák op verzoek

Modelled on Johannes
Brahmsâ?? famous
Hungarian Dances,
although in contrast to
Brahmsâ?? work,
Dvorák used no
original melodies. Wil
van der Beek has arranged
No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance,
as well as No. 8, a
passionate, exuberant
furiant in 3/4.
In 1878 schreef
Dvoøák op verzoek
van zijn uitgever een
serie van acht Slavische

beroemde Hongaarse dansen
van Brahms als voorbeeld
moeten dienen.
Dvoøák had echter
zijn eigen opvattingover

beperkte Dvoøák
zich tot karakteristieke
ritmische patronen van
dansvormen uit zijn

zijn de Slavischedansen
gecomponeerd voor klavier
vierhandig. Vrij spoedig
maakte Dvoøák zelf
een versie voor orkest,
waarmee hij wereldroem

The Spanish war
galleon with 64 cannons,
built in Cuba between
1770 and 1771 for an
English shipowner in the
service of the King of
Spain left Peru for Cadiz
in 1784 with a huge cargo
of copper, gold, silver
and other valuables on
board. There were also
more than 400 people on
board, including
passengers, crew and Inca
prisoners after a revolt.
The Atlantic crossing
went smoothly, passing
Portugal to take
advantage of favourable
winds. The shipwreck off
Peniche was the result of
human error, apparently
due to French maps with
dramatic errors in the
position of the islands
of Berlengas and
neighbouring islets. On 2
February 1786, the sea
was calm and the night
clear, but they hit the
rock formation Papoa and
the hull immediately
broke in two. The bottom
sank quickly, while the
deck remained afloat for
some time. 128 people
lost their lives,
including many Indians
who were trapped in the
basement. This shipwreck
is considered one of the
most important in
maritime
history.
What the
composer wants to convey,
and what can be felt as
one listens, is first of
all the sound of power,
of hope, of the glory of
conquest, of the
splendour of wealth. This
is followed by the
perception of the
maritime environment, the
harmony with the softness
of the ocean, the gliding
of the hull in the foam
of the sea on sunny, blue
days. But along with this
tranquillity, you soon
hear a rhythmic chain
that makes you feel a
representation of the
hustle and bustle, of the
busy crew, of the hard
work of a sailor, of the
desperation of an exotic
people imprisoned in a
dark, damp cellar. A
distinct rhythm that
reminds us of the salero
of Andalusia, with its
Arab influences and its
people, the soothing of
the resignation of others
who are forced to submit.
Then we clearly hear a
crescendo that makes us
imagine the agony of the
collision that precedes
the shipwreck. The
breaking of the hull, the
water flooding
everything, the despair,
the clash of bodies on
the rocks, the tragedy to
come. Before the grand
finale, in which the
return of musical
softness reminds us that
the story is over. The
supremacy of nature over
human greed. The waves,
though gentle, sweep the
wreckage, the lives and
the treasures of the New
World to the bottom of
the sea.

from a poem by Walt
Whitman and the music is
a celebration of the
planet we live on. It has
three thematic elements:
the sequence of chords of
the opening, a brief
staccato passage passed
around different
instruments in the
fashion of a canon, and
an expressive melody
first played by the
woodwinds and later
repeated by the trumpet,
saxophone and euphonium.
A gentler section comes
to a point of
contemplation, when a
strong rhythmic motive
brings it back to the
celebratory mood of the

from the words antithesis
and program. The work is
bi-thematic -- the first
theme comprised of eleven
notes, the second
(beginning at measure 63)
more like a chorale in
structure. A four-note
tone cluster (B flat, C,
F sharp, B natural)
appears in the first
measure, and subsequently
appears as an arpeggiated
ostinato (B flat, C, and
F sharp, in orchestra
bells and vibraphone)
that underpins and
adheres subsequent
sections. After the
themes are treated in a
number of traditional
ways (two-voice
counterpoint, canon,
chorale, and diminution)
they are joined at
measure 110 in a
polychordal statement.
The work should be
performed with energy,
with special attention to
a precise and lively
style of articulation.
Antithigram was composed
in the Summer of 1977 and
premiered by the East
Carolina University
