Concerto No. 1 in 1858
and performed the work's
debut in Hanover,
Germany, in 1859, to
mixed reviews. The work
initially began as a
sonata for two pianos,
then a four-movement
symphony. Under the
counsel of friends Julius
Otto Grimm and violinist
Joseph Joachim, Brahms
landed on a
three-movement piano
concerto. After its fifth
performance in December
1861, with Clara Schumann
as piano soloist, the
work still received mixed
audience reception. It
has since grown in
popularity and has been
recognized as a
masterpiece.

Strauss (1864-1949)
originally wrote this
work for solo piano and
orchestra under the title
Scherzo in D minor in
1886 for conductor and
pianist Hans von
Bülow, a large
influence on Strauss'
career. Von Bülow,
however, consider the
work a complicated piece
of nonsense and wanted
nothing to do it.
Discouraged, Strauss set
the work aside until
1889, when he met
Scottish pianist Eugen
d'Albert, who liked it
while also suggesting
some changes. With a new
title, Burleske, and a
dedication to d'Albert,
the work was premiered on
June 21st, 1890 in
Eisenach at the
Tonkünstlerfest with
d'Albert at the piano and
Strauss conducting.
Despite this, Strauss
remained convinced that
the work lacked merit and
refused to have the work
published until 1894,
although it eventually
became one of his
favorite works. Strauss
never gave the work an
opus number, but many
consider it to be Op. 11,
which is actually
assigned to his Horn
Concerto No. 1 in E-flat.

Prokofiev
composed his first piano
concerto while at the
Conservatory, in 1911 and
1912, and premiered it
himself on August 7,
1912. The concerto is a
single movement divided
into clearly marked
sections. Prokofiev could
in this way keep the
typical fast-slow-fast
structure of the usual
three-movement concerto,
yet use some of the same
thematic elements
throughout all of his
sections. Throughout the
work, Prokofiev
demonstrates his penchant
for bright, percussive
textures. The
glockenspiel takes on a
uniquely soloistic role,
often teaming up with the
piano to sparkle above
the orchestral fray. With
its bravura solos and
daring harmonies,
Prokofiev's first
'mature' composition
announces him as a
musical force to be
reckoned with.

At the
precocious age of
fourteen, Felix
Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
scribbled out his
Concerto for Two Pianos
and Orchestra in E major.
He wrote a second, this
time longer, double piano
concerto the following
year. In December 1823,
the young composer gave
the first performance of
the E major concerto with
his sister Fanny
Mendelssohn. Since he
came to regard it as mere
juvenilia, it never
achieved publication in
his lifetime. Filled with
stylish finger-work, the
concerto clearly served
to display the musical
gifts of the two
siblings. It remained
forgotten until a
version, which had been
revised by the composer
himself and edited by
Karl-Heinz Köhler,
surfaced in 1961 in a
Leipzig critical edition.

Schumann (1810-1856)
wrote his CELLO CONCERTO
in A minor, Op. 129, in
1850, within the span of
only two weeks. He tried
offering the work to two
publishers before
Breitkopf and Hartel
decided to publish it. He
stressed the point that
it would probably sell
because cello concerti
were few and far between.
Never performed in the
composer's lifetime, it
received its premiere in
Oldenburg on April 23,
1860, with Ludwig Ebert
playing the solo part.
The unique charm of the
concerto lies in its
structure and scoring,
without movement breaks,
and written so that the
cello part almost never
strays from its middle
and upper registers.

commissioned by the
Nagoya City Fire Bureau
for the 50th anniversary
of the Nagoya City Fire
Bureau Band (Nagoya,
Japan). It was premiered
by the band on 7 February
2009, conducted by Masuo
Nakamura. This concert
march was conceived to
lift up the spirits of
the firemen who save
people’s lives.
The solemn and
heart-warming melodies
express their braveness
when faced with danger
and the tenderness shown
towards the people they
protect.It is an ideal
march to open a concert
and to inspire both
performers and
audience.

This work
was commissioned by the
Miyazaki Prefectural
Police Band from Kyushu,
Japan, and was
premièred in 2017.
Bandmaster Sano is an
elder alumni of Musashino
Academia Musicae, Toyko,
where Satoshi Yagisawa
also studied. He asked
Yagisawa to write a
brilliant one-minute
fanfare that could be
played as an opening
piece for any concert. It
will be perfect for
yours!
Ein
Dirigent gab dem
Komponisten eine
brillante einminütige
Fanfare in Auftrag, die
man bei jedem Anlass als
Eröffnungsstück
spielen können sollte.
Um dies zu erfüllen,
verwendete Yagisawa die
ganze Palette der
Klangmöglichkeiten der
Blechblasinstrumente. Und
das Resultat ist eine
sehr abwechslungsreich
gestaltete, kurze

(Dance of the Dead) was
conceived by Franz Liszt
(1811-1886) in 1938. Two
versions were to follow,
the first completed in
1853, and the second
version finished in 1864.
The flashy virtuosic
piece for the solo piano
uses the Gregorian
plainchant melody Dies
irae (Day of Judgement)
in a set of variations.
The first version, which
is nicknamed De
Profundis, is most
commonly heard in the
1919 edition by famed
Italian composer,
pianist, and conductor
Ferruccio Busoni
(1866-1924).
