arranged by J.S. Bach

Jacob de Haan
was commissioned to
compose this concert
piece by the St. Peters
Wind Symphony from
Brisbane, Australia. Ross
Roy is the monumental
late 19th century villa
where St. Peters Lutheran
College was founded in
1945. The villa has
always remained the
school symbol. In this
composition, Jacob de
Haan sees the Ross Roy as
a metaphor for the years
spent at school (a
monument in time), where
one's personality is
formed. So, the opening
theme the artist calls
the Ross Roy theme
initially has monumental
characteristics.The
rhythmic motion, which
strides along in the
lower register and
percussion at the
beginning of the next
section is typical of
Tempo di Marcia.
Thismovement, accompanied
by repetitions of sound,
is a metaphor for the
structure and discipline
in school. This is the
introduction to a march
theme, symbolic of
passing through the
classes up to the final
examinations.Then, the
Ross Roy theme is dealt
with again, now in a
playful, humorous
variation. As if the
composer is saying there
should also be time for a
smile in school. The same
theme can be heard in
major key and a slower
tempo in the following
section, expressing pride
and self-confidence. This
is also the introduction
to the expressive middle
section that represents
love, friendship and
understanding.We then
return to the march theme
in a slightly altered
construction. The
oriental sounds,
constituting the
modulation to the final
theme, are symbols of the
diversity of cultures in
the school. The
characteristic final
theme first sounds
solemn, but turns into a
festive apotheosis. It is
no coincidence that the
final cadence is
reminiscent of the close
to a traditional
overture, for the school
years can be considered
the overture to the rest
of one's life. The
premiere of Ross Roy was
conducted by Jacob de
Haan in Brisbane, on
August 22, 1997.

Een

The hymn Nun
ruhen alle Wälder (Now
All Forests Rest),
arranged by J.S. Bach
(No. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, from
Cantata BWV 13), is a
guiding light throughout
this four-movement
composition. Pütz
wrote this work as a
musical outcry against
the wilful, profit-driven
destruction of our
environment. When Bach
used the word
“ruhen†(to
rest) over 350 years ago,
it probably had a
different nuance from the
meaning it has today. At
the beginning of the 21st
century - the so-called
age of progress -
“nun ruhen alle
Wälder†should
mean “now all
forests die†.
Massive industrialization
and globalization,
coupled with pure greed,
corruption, political
scandals, an
ever-wideninggap between
the rich and poor, and
other such senseless
human actions, are
pushing our blue planet
closer and closer to the
point of no return. This
work is not intended to
be a ranting accusation.
It should remind us of
the beauty and harmony
that can exist all around
us in nature, if we take
care of it. Pütz
hopes that this will, one
day, help put a greater
emphasis on
humanity’s
survival, and coexistence
with nature rather than
the exploitation
described earlier. All
four texts were created
by Australian poet Graeme
King, whose works were
discovered by Pütz,
by chance on the
internet. Pütz was
especially captivated by
King’s clarity,
and intrigued by the
possibilities of adapting
and melding the strong
rhythmical structure of
King’s writing
with his own musical
language. The four
movements are as follows:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3. Stand
up! 4. Tomorrow The world
première of Four Earth
Songs took place on 7
July 2009 at the 14th
WASBE-Conference in
Cincinnati (USA). This
work is dedicated in
friendship to Jouke
Hoekstra, conductor, and
the Frysk Fanfare Orkest
(the Frisian
Fanfare-Orchestra).
De hymne Nun
ruhen alle Wälder,
gearrangeerd door J.S.
Bach (nr. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, uit cantate
BWV 13), is de leidraad
in deze vierdelige
compositie. Pütz
schreef het werk als een
muzikaal protest tegen de
moedwillige,op winstbejag
gebaseerde vernietiging
van ons milieu. Toen Bach
het woord
‘ruhen’
(rusten) meer dan 350
jaar geleden gebruikte,
lag er waarschijnlijk een
andere nuance in dan
tegenwoordig. Aan het
begin van de 21e eeuw -
dezogenaamde eeuw van de
vooruitgang - zou
‘nun ruhen alle
Wälder’ zelfs
kunnen betekenen:
‘nu sterven alle
bossen’. De
grootschalige
industrialisatie en
globalisering, in
combinatie met pure
hebzucht, corruptie,
politieke schandalen,een
groeiende kloof tussen
arm en rijk, en andere
dwaze menselijke
verrichtingen, brengen
onze blauwe planeet
steeds verder in de
problemen, tot er
misschien geen weg terug
meer is. Dit werk is niet
bedoeld als een
beschuldigendetirade. Het
moet ons wijzen op de
schoonheid en harmonie
die in de natuur om ons
heen kan bestaan, als we
er goed voor zorgen.
Pütz hoopt dat er op
een dag meer nadruk
gelegd zal worden op het
overleven van de mensheid
invreedzame co-existentie
met de natuur, zonder de
eerdergenoemde
uitbuiting. Alle vier de
teksten zijn geschreven
door de Australische
dichter Graeme King,
wiens werk Pütz bij
toeval tegenkwam op het
internet. Hij werd
getroffendoor Kings
helderheid en raakte ge
ntrigeerd door de
mogelijkheid de sterke
ritmische structuur van
Kings teksten om te
zetten in zijn eigen
muzikale taal. De vier
delen zijn de volgende:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3.Stand up!

premiered in October
2017, in memory and

Anderson, a local
musician and
educator.When writing
this piece, I tried to
convey certain moods and
emotions throughout:
soulful at the beginning
with calm woodwind chords
and solo trombone;
increased energy
throughout the various
sections of the piece;
exploration of different
grooves and colors; an
uplifting, emotional
ending that leaves the
listener with a sense of
how positive and loving
Chris was.This piece is
largely inspired by a
specific quote from
Chris:Most people would
consider the sounds
students first make on
their instruments to be
cringe-worthy, but to me
that’s music to my
ears, because
that’s the first
time students put a voice
to their instrument. Over
time those voices become
stronger; they become
clear, more confident,
and get to a point where
they use those voices to
communicate with each
other, and to their
audiences.To relate to
the first notes on the
instrument idea, I used
motifs based on the first
notes most beginners ever
play, do-re-mi, which are
introduced at the
beginning of the piece
with the trombone solo,
Chris’ instrument.
During the section at m.
15, the brass introduce a
chorale that I named
Chris’ Theme while
the woodwinds keep
reminding us of do-re-mi.
Later in the piece (mm.
71 and 79), I use these
notes again, but in
reverse, which becomes a
reference to the first
song most beginners
learn, Hot Cross Buns.
This section is also
meant to portray
Chris’ quirky and
joking side. In mm. 75
and 83, Chris’
Theme presents itself
again a couple of times
in response to Hot Cross
Buns.Toward the end, at
the uplifting moment (m.
97), do-re-mi is heard
again, but this time in
harmony with mi-fa-sol.
This represents the
ultimate satisfaction we
all feel as musicians
when we have finally
progressed enough to play
in harmony with others.
The half-time feeling in
3 at that moment also has
significance, relating
(rhythmically) to those
important three notes
again.I really hope you
enjoy performing and
listening to this piece
as much as I have enjoyed
creating it!

In The

composer gives an insight
into childhood and youth
— inspired by his
own daughter. The opening
of sparking rhythms,
dynamic contrasts and

the love — and also
tension and the worries

adult-child bond, through
dissonant harmonies but
also pretty melodies. The

Born in
Jarrow, northeast
England, in 1949, John
Miles was something of a
child prodigy, learning
the piano from the age of
five. In the early '60s
he persuaded his father
to buy him a guitar and
by the end of the decade
he had joined
asemi-professional band,
The Influence. The group
soon disbanded and by
1969 Miles was recording
with his own group, The
John Miles Band,
releasing a dozen singles
in the early '70s. In
1975 Miles decided to
move to London and
secured a dealwith Decca
Records. By October that
year, a newly formed
band, John Miles and Co,
had released their debut
single, Highfly,
but their greatest hit,
which stormed the British
charts in March 1976, was
Music.
In
1976 bestormde het nummer
Music van de band
John Miles and Co de
hitparades. Music,
vaak bekritiseerd als
pompeus en hoogdravend in
een periode die steeds
meer de kant van de punk
opging, was in feite
typisch Britsetechnopop

plaat voor die tijd,
samen met nummers als
Queen’s
Bohemian Rhapsody.

aanstekelijk.

Hoshide says, I have
selected beautiful
melodies from the
soundtrack of 'Princess
Mononoke' (1997, directed
by Hayao Miyazaki) and
arranged them into a
medley. What can be said
about these songs as a
whole is that they
combine a grand
continental scale with
the delicacy that
reflects Japanese
emotions. Since there are
no upbeat songs in this
selection, I had to work
hard on the arrangement,
but this allowed for
creating contrasts and
transitions between each
scene in the performance.
'Ashitaka Sekki (English
title: The Legend of
Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki'
means a story that is not
recorded but passed down
orally. In this anime,
this can be considered a
sub-main theme. The song
starts with a feeling
that the story is about
to begin and, once the
theme kicks in, aim for a
grand performance to
convey its scale.
'Encounter' - This is the
music that plays during
the scene where the
protagonist Ashitaka
meets San. Interestingly,
the motif of the main
theme 'Princess Mononoke'
is used in this melody.
Here, let's pursue the
shifts in the timbre of
individual phrases,
creating a beautiful and
aesthetic soundscape.
'Princess Mononoke' -
This is the main title of
the anime. The melody
line is carried by horns
and trumpets.

Hymne an die
Nacht is a deeply moving
theme by the master
composer Ludwig van
Beethoven. It is taken
from his Sonata No. 23 in
F minor, Op. 57
(Appassionata), which he
composed between
1804-1806. This theme
originates from the
second movement of this
famous sonata which
Beethoven himself
considered his best work
in this genre. The
passion of this sonata
inspired Michael Bilkes
to make this beautiful
arrangement.
Hymne an die

ontroerend thema van

van Beethoven. Het is
afkomstig uit zijn sonate
nr. 23 in F-mineur, opus
57 (Appassionata),
die hij componeerde in
1804-1806. Dit thema komt
uithet tweede deel van
deze beroemde sonate, die
door Beethoven zelf werd
beschouwd als zijn beste.
Het inspireerde Michael
Bilkes tot het schrijven
van deze mooie
bewerking.

chanson I Will
Survive qui devient
un hymne de
l'emancipation feminine.
En 1997, reprise par le
groupe Hermes House Band,
elle devient l'hymne des

Marsyas ist ein
Satyr aus den
Metamorphosen des
griechischen Dichters
Ovid (43 v. Chr.-17 n.
Chr.). Er findet eine von
der Gottin Athene
weggeworfene Flote und
spielt bald so gut, dass
ihn Apollo zu einem
musikalischen Wettstreit
zwischen Flote und Lyra
herausfordert. Durch
einen üblen Trick
verliert Marsyas und
erleidet eine grausame
Strafe. Diese Sage bot
eine ausgezeichnete
Vorlage für ein
spannendes Solowerk
für Flote, in
welchem auch die Harfe
(Lyra)
erklingt.
Si les
recits de metamorphoses
furent tres populaires
dans l'Antiquite
greco-romaine, le recueil
du poete latin Ovide [43
av. J.-C./17 apr. J.-C.]
est de loin le plus
celebre. Les quinze
livres des
Metamorphoses
racontent la formation du
monde et les
transformations
legendaires des dieux et
des hommes en animaux, en
plantes ou en objets.
Parmi les nombreuses
histoires de
metamorphoses relatees
par Ovide, on trouve
celle de Marsyas, un
satyre originaire de
Celenes en Phrygie. Fils
d'Hyagnis, considere
comme l'inventeur de
l'harmonie phrygienne,
Marsyas excellait dans la
musique. Un jour, Athena
fit une flute double et
en joua a un banquet des
dieux. Tournee en
derisionpar Hera et
Aphrodite, et ayant
constate elle-meme, en
voyant le reflet de son
visage dans l'eau, que
l'instrument, quand elle
en jouait, lui deformait
les traits, elle jeta la
flute en maudissant
quiconque la ramasserait.
Cette malediction frappa
le satyre Marsyas qui la
trouva et en joua
magnifiquement, au grand
plaisir des paysans des
contrees phrygiennes qui
l'ecoutaient et qui
pretendirent que le dieu
Apollon en personne
n'aurait pu mieux faire
avec sa lyre. Apollon
entra dans une colere
formidable et proposa a
l'insolent satyre un
concours musical dont le
vainqueur pourrait faire
subir au vaincu le
chatiment de son choix.
Les Muses et le roi
Midas, choisis comme
juges, ne reussirent pas
a departager les
concurrents. Alors,
Apollon joua de la lyre a
l'envers et demanda a
Marsyas d'en faire autant
avec son instrument. Cela
etait impossible. Marsyas
n'y parvint pas, et
Apollon fut declare
vainqueur. Il se vengea
du satyre de la plus
cruelle facon : il
l'attacha a un pin et
l'ecorcha vif.Certains
racontent qu'Apollon, se
repentant de sa
vengeance, metamorphosa
en fleuve le corps de
Marsyas. D'autres
pretendent que le sang de
Marsyas ou les larmes
versees par les nymphes
et les satyres, prives
des enchantements de sa
flute, formerent le
fleuve de Phrygie qui
porte son nom. /
