Belgium, and is dedicated
to the famous clarinet
soloist Eddy
Vanoosthuyse. A
slightly mysterious intro
leads to an orchestral
climax with ascending
melodies and the entrance
of the soloist. This
occurs at first with
fragmentary musical
ideas, and then with
longer melodic lines. The
orchestra delivers the
dialogue withthe soloist,
and creates a fitting
musical frame with a
delicate and colourful
instrumentation. Towards
the end of the music, the
atmosphere from the
beginning is restored,
and the soloist finishes
on the same note that he
started the piece on.
The concerto is also
available as a piano
reduction.

coincidence that the
commission for SINFONIA
XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL
VIENNA came from the
Henry David Thoreau
School located in Vienna,
Virginia. Thoreau is one
of the magic names in
American culture: Henry
David Thoreau, one of the
leading figures of the
Transcendentalist
movement, centered in
19th-century New England,
left us a body of unique
philosophical and
poetical writings. To
utter the words, Walden
Pond, is to invoke an
America long past in
physical actuality, but
still present in the
minds and hearts of many
American citizens. The
name, Vienna, of course,
summons thoughts of the
Old World: culture, fine
food, wine, civilized
cities. While
contemplating the form
that SINFONIA XVI should
take, I found myself
thinking of two pillars
of Viennese culture:
expressionism and the
waltz. Musically
speaking, expressionism
reached a zenith in the
works of Arnold
Schoenberg and Alban
Berg. It was Berg, in
particular, that I wanted
to invoke in the outer
movements of my
composition. I knew I
would also have to
include a waltz, and an
invocation of the
mysterious forces that
are contained in both
expressionism and
transcendentalism. Thus
was the structure of the
work generated. The outer
movements with their
vision of the night sky
and the stars, Aldebaran
and Sirius, frame the
central movements, which
are essentially two
versions of the same
material, and are quieter
and less dramatic. The
outer movements are
symmetrical, and share
both pitch and rhythmic
materials. Accordingly, I
see the work as a ternary
form, with the central
movements forming a unit
within the outer frame: A
(Movement 1) B (Movements
2 & 3) A' (Movement 4).
Harmonically, the work
can be summarized by the
two pitch-series which
occur in the opening bars
of Movement 1: the
initial 12-note row, with
a tonal center on F-sharp
(measures 1-6), and the
subsequent D-minor Dorian
7-note row (beginning in
measure 14). Aspects of
these materials occur in
all four movements, but
they are most strongly
present in Movements 1
and 4. Note that the
12-note row is not
subjected to the usual
serial procedures, but
instead is treated as a
signifier and is left
unchanged. Since the
fourth movement takes up
where the first movement
leaves off, I can
conceive of one
interpretation of
SINFONIA XVI as an
evocation of Thoreau
himself contemplating two
of the brightest stars on
a clear, cold night.
Aldebaran is an orange,
first-magnitude star,
located in the
constellation Taurus;
Sirius, the Dog Star, is
the brightest star in the
sky, and is located in
the constellation Canis
Major. Thoreau interrupts
his star-gazing to
entertain some inward
thoughts, waking dreams,
as it were, then returns
his gaze to the splendid
night sky and all its
treasures. Although many
other interpretations of
the material are
possible, it is important
to remember that the
abstract materials of the
piece -- pitch, rhythm,
structure -- are what

It is a good piece to
demonstrate basic
compositional techniques
that the students will be
able identify easily in
the piece. It begins with
a lush opening section
with an elegant melody to
work on musicianship.
This is contrasted by the
uptempo section of the
piece based on the same
basic musical material,
but in a varied style and
frolicking feel. A very
satisfying piece for
beginning wind
players. Contemplation
: the action to look
thoughtfully at something
for a long time.When
composing music that will
be used with younger
students, I want to
stimulate thoughtfulness
in them. In this
particular piece I want
the students to be able
to stretch their
musicianship beyond their
experience on their
instruments to play in a
contemplative
manner. To me, this is
the essence of musical
playing in an emotional
and thoughtful way. It is
something that cannot be
stressed enough, even in
students that have just
begun to play. As soon
as possible, they should
be asked to put
themselves into the music
and make it more than the
notes and rhythms on the
page.This piece is my
attempt to provide very
young students, who are
just beginning their
musical journey, with
something they can reach
technically, but have to
stretch for
musically. The amount
of notes and rhythms
is limited, but students
should strive for beauty
of tone, good phrasing
and emotional
involvement.After a short
introduction, the
heartfelt main theme
begins at a lyrical and
slow tempo. This is
developed with the
addition of a secondary
theme, featuring the
lower voices, before the
piece leads to an Allegro
section that is based on
the same musical material
with a difference in
tempo and a variation in
rhythm patterns. The
piece can serve to show
students that the same
basic music can have an
entirely different
emotional connection with
differences in tempo,
rhythm and style, with
the first section of the
piece being sentimental
and the faster section
being more joyous in
nature. As with all
of my pieces for younger
students, it is
completely acceptable to
me for you to adjust the
tempo to fit the
educational needs of your
students.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope you and
your students enjoy it
and find it useful for
your

Roland Forti, championed
the commissioning of this
piece to honor the life
of Linda after her
untimely passing in
February of
2017. Linda
Mann’s impact on
the field of music
education was profound
and wide-reaching. She
was a beloved member of
the staff at Diplomat
Middle School, as well as
the music community of
Cape Coral and the state
of Florida. Linda was
highly respected
throughout the state,
serving as recent
past-president of the
Florida Bandmasters
Association.In discussing
the type of piece the
school wanted to honor
Ms. Mann, they indicated
the piece should
“depict
Linda’s
personality: dynamic,
sassy, yet thoughtful and
almost
mentor-like.†They
wanted a piece that was
upbeat, yet still had
moments that were
thoughtful, portraying
the grief that the
Diplomat Middle School
community has suffered
from the sudden loss of
such a beloved
teacher.After
contemplating their
thoughts, I did some
research to find
inspiration for the
piece. This led me to
poetry about grief and
loss. In time, I stumbled
upon a short, yet
poignant poem that I felt
perfectly depicted the
sentiment that I wanted
the piece to convey.Â
That poem is entitled

of a tritone between the
first two openly voiced
chords are used to
represent the sadness we
all feel from this type
of loss. When I sat in
front of my piano and
started to work on this
piece, my hands seemed to
naturally and immediately
play these first two
chords, which set the
process in motion of
composing the piece.After
the somber opening, the
piece shifts to a
whimsical theme that I
hope brings about happy
thoughts of Linda and her
personality. It was also
my intent, however, to
include some musical
dissonance in the theme
that still reflected the
bittersweet loss at the
same time. The piece
develops into a secondary
theme that is a quasi
inversion of the main
fast theme. This
section is followed by a
return of the opening

Guernica, a
peaceful town in the
Basque region of Spain,
was reduced to ruins on

Composition.
Astrology is based on the
principle that each sort
of time has its own
quality. In order to
determine the quality of
a particular moment, an
astrologer looks at the
position of the planets
in the solar sustemat
that moment. Each planet
has specific types of
energies and its location
provides unique
information for a certain
moment on Earth. Thus:
its position in the sky
tells something about
what happens on
Earth.
In this
composition the typesof
energies of four planets
are musically translated.
The four planet were not
randomly chosen. There
are two pairs, whose
influence and energy are
opposite.
Venus
and Mars. Venus
represents the feminine
principle: harmony,
beauty,art, and the
ability to make
relationships and to keep
the peace. Venus
connects, and
communicates in order to
maintain the balance.
Mars represent the
masculine principle:
winning, impulsiveness,
enthusiasm, and sexual
energy for procreation.He
creates war enabling the
strongest to triumph.
Mars is musically
depicted in a stirring
march in which enthusiasm
characterises the
masculine
character.
Saturn
and Jupiter. Saturn
represents concentration
and withdrawal: the
strongnotion of
responsibility,
seriousness,
self-discipline and
melancholy. Saturn is the
hermit who will conquer
his fears and worries in
minimal conditions and by
self-chastisement. This
contemplative character
is depicted in the music
as if it isalmost
standing still, which
also reflects the given
character of this
planet. Jupiter
represents growth and
expansion: the positive,
self-confidence, the good
Samaritan, the healer.
Jupiter is the
philosopher who will make
the world a betterplace,
sees future
possibilities, and
searches for eternal
values. He is the prophet

raves his doctrine and
proclamations, resulting
musically in a whirling
and upbeat finale. not

poems by Hermann Hesse
(Stufen and
Besinnung), Jacob
de Haan has now made a
musical arrangement of
this famous poem by Kurt
Tucholsky. It deals with
life in the city, brief
encounters,
loneliness,people’
s yearnings and the
all-consuming lack of
time. Jacob de
Haan’s work can be
performed either with a
male or female voice, and
the use of a microphone
is recommended.

Farewell form L'Enfance
du Christ is restrained,
delicate, and
contemplative. In this
arrangement for small
wind orchestra, the
instruments are called
upon to display their
softer persuasive sounds
in order to retain the
sensitive nature of this
tender
music.
L'Enfance
du Christ (The Childhood
of Christ), written
between 1850 and 1854, is
the nearest that Berlioz
got to writing an
oratorio. It is in three
parts; he called it a
'sacred trilogy.'
Throughout, the music is
restrained, delicate, and
contemplative. In its
original version, The
Shepherds' Farewell is
scored for chorus
accompanied by two oboes,
two clarinets, and
strings. With these
selected colors, Berlioz
achieves a masterpiece of
delicacy and serenity. In
this arrangement for
small wind orchestra
without chorus, the wind
instruments are called
upon to display their
softer persuasive sounds
in order to retain the
sensitive nature of this
tender music. This
arrangement may be used
with chorus utilizing the
original chorus parts.
The key is one half tone
lower than the original
setting.

piece - from the
anticipation of the jump,
to the contemplative mood
of the aerial view, to
the excitement of the
'freefall' itself. The
piece features a rare
euphonium solo during the
middle lyrical section.
Jump!
My intention
was to begin this piece
with the feeling of
anticipation and
excitement which might be
experienced when setting
out on a free fall
adventure. This gives way
to the more contemplative
mood of the aerial
panorama before returning
to the excitement of the
jump. Freefall was
commissioned in 1998 with
the aid of funds provided
by Gower Music
International. Having
organized tours for bands
for many years, Gower
wished to provide bands
planning a tour with an
added dimension to their
touring projects.

unwrapped by the
percussion section in the
fourth part, Surprise
Party. The yell may be
adapted to the occasion.

the composer to note down
this somewhat peculiar

everybody is expected to
join in.
