Written for the Kuching Wind Symphony in Malaysia, Fanfare and Homage is a tribute to the work of music educators around the globe. The dynamic opening fanfare section features bold brass statements, short percussion break and a lyric solo for trumpet. A tender and emotional middle section includes short solos for flute, oboe (opt. tenor sax), and clarinet, with expanded harmonies and a beautiful building section. In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan’s twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, “Soli Deo Gloria” (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Saëns organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond.Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from ‘Jan de Haan’ and ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Saëns’ theme.

Homage wurde von Jan Van der Roost im Auftrage der Brass Band Soli Deo Gloria aus Leeuwarden geschrieben. Direkter Anlass dazu war das 20-jährige Jubiläum von Jan de Haan als Dirigent dieses Ensembles. Als Inspiration diente dem Komponistendas Choralthema der Orgelsymphonie von Camille Saint-Saëns, ein von Jan de Haan geschätztes Werk. Nebst diesem Choral basiert Homage ebenfalls auf den Notenbezeichnungen aus ‘Jan de Haan’ und ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, was die Notenreihe DEGAH ergab.Beide Elemente werden durcheinander verwendet, bis sich schließlich die ganze Band im Finale mit dem Saint-Saëns-Thema wieder zusammenfindet.

This work was commissioned by the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force Band, based at Kure City, Hiroshima, Japan, to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The composer used a passage from Kosaku Yamadas Umi No Sakimori (Sakimori of the Sea), ceremonial music of the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The result is Homage, expressing Yagisawa's respect for Yamada and his work- a tribute to a composerwhose legacy includes a large number of Japanese songs.

This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting theensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the namesJean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful andlighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

Deze korte maar plechtige ouverture is geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 110-jarig bestaan van Harmonie Hautcharage uit Luxemburg. This solemn work pays homage to a city particularly affected by the two World Wars and is inspired by the knowledge that the city of Beauquesne needed to recover from these terrible episodes in its history. The title has its origin in the roots of the word â??Beauquesneâ?, the beautiful oak tree. It is a beautiful slow piece for your concert, or as a resource to work on phrasing and intonation, or alternatively as a warm up piece.

Children â??s Oak is geschreven in opdracht van het blaasorkest van het Franse Beauquesne. Dit plechtige werk is een eerbetoon aan een plaats die in de beide wereldoorlogen zwaar is getroffen. Het is ge nspireerd op de gedachte dat de gemeente Beauquesne zich moest herstellen na deze verschrikkelijke periodes uit haar geschiedenis. De titel is gebaseerd op het woord â??beauquesneâ??: de mooie eikenboom. Het is een fraai langzaam stuk voor uw volgende concert dat tevens geschikt is om te werken aan frasering en intonatie. Ook is het prima muziek voor een warming-up.

Das Stück Childrenâ??s Oak wurde vom Blasorchester in Beauquesne (Frankreich) in Auftrag gegeben. Dieses feierliche Werk würdigt eine Stadt, die in den beiden Weltkriegen stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde. Geprägt von der Hoffnung, die die Stadt Beauquesne brauchte, um sich von den schrecklichen Ereignissen seiner Geschichte zu erholen handelt es sich um ein wunderschönes langsames Stück, das nicht nur für Konzerte geeignet ist, sondern auch um Intonation und Phrasierungen zu üben oder aber auch als Aufwärmstück.

Het is ge nspireerd op de gedachte dat de gemeente Beauquesne zich moest herstellen na deze verschrikkelijke periodes uit haar geschiedenis. De titel is gebaseerd op het woord ‘beauquesne’ : de mooie eikenboom. Het is een fraai langzaam stuk voor uw volgende concert dat tevens geschikt is om te werken aan frasering en intonatie. Ook is het prima muziek voor een warming-up.

Das Stück Children’s Oak wurde vom Blasorchester in Beauquesne (Frankreich) in Auftrag gegeben. Dieses feierliche Werk würdigt eine Stadt, die in den beiden Weltkriegen stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde. Geprägt von der Hoffnung, die die Stadt Beauquesne brauchte, um sich von den schrecklichen Ereignissen seiner Geschichte zu erholen handelt es sich um ein wunderschönes langsames Stück, das nicht nur für Konzerte geeignet ist, sondern auch um Intonation und Phrasierungen zu üben oder aber auch als Aufwärmstück.

Ce morceau solennel rend hommage une ville particulièrement touchée par les deux guerres mondiales et s’inspire de l’espoir dont a eu besoin la ville de Beauquesne pour se relever des moments terribles de son histoire. L’œuvre tire son titre de l’origine du mot « Beauquesne », le beau chêne. Un magnifique morceau lent pour votre concert, ou comme ressource pour travailler sur les phrasés et l’intonation, ou sinon comme pièce d’échauffement.

‘The Fellowship’ is a musical homage to friendship and camaraderie, symbolised in two alternating, complementary themes. The themes are based on popular songs from two sister municipalities, one lying in Normandy (France), and the other in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Through the merging of their songs in this composition, their bond of friendship is sealed for eternity.

The Fellowship staat voor vriendschap en kameraadschap. Deze symboliek komt tot uiting in twee thema’s, die elkaar afwisselen en elkaar aanvullen. Het ene thema is gebaseerd op een Frans lied, het andere op een Duits lied. Musical drama and humor are on full display here, as the composer pays homage to the Romantic orchestral repertoire, specifically the Brahms Hungarian Dances. A blazing tempo, interspersed with very slow sections, sudden dynamic shifts, and a juxtaposition of d minor and F major effectively add contrast to this new concert band work that sounds as if it came straight out of the 1800's. Program Notes:Avalon–Long live the King began its journey as a commission in honor of a dear friend and mentor. David Riggs is one of those band directors that just seems timeless. He is a powerhouse with such a stacked resume that it is easy to forget that at the end of the day he enjoys taking long bike rides with his lovely wife and whittling a piece of wood just as much as being a band director. He has touched so many lives and inspired so many people in our field and beyond. I was humbled, and honored, when I was contacted for the commission. To David, I hope that you one day know how much you mean to so many people, including myself.About the piece:The piece is written with a little homage to David’s long tenure at Avalon Middle school in Pace, Florida. He was certainly treated like a king as the band director and rightly so. It seemed only fitting to add a little medieval fantasy. Avalon is a mystical island in the world of King Arthur where the great sword Excalibur was forged.The piece begins lyrically with a slow introduction with melodic material. This melodic motive is used throughout with slight variations depending on the instrument voicing etc. Care should be taken at m. 10 that the Timpani roll helps to bridge our transition from an exposed section to full tutti. Care should be taken so that the tempo change at m. 19 is brisk and avoids the low brass turning into stomping. Accessories like the China cymbal and tambourine can become overpowering. I recommend having students think of these effects as background in order to make sure they don’t POP out. The dynamic changes at mm. 27-35 should be subito similar to orchestral dynamic changes. Avoid unwritten crescendos in this section. Measures 60–64 are a great opportunity to teach those unwritten dynamics that make music so enjoyable as we lead up to the finale. It was originally left blank for some theatrics in the premiere at David’s retirement concert so I know he would enjoy adding some Cholesterol as David would say.Long Live the King!
