A lot is known
about the American
composer Leroy Anderson.
This son of Swedish
immigrants played the
piano, organ, accordion,
trombone, tuba and double
bass. He spoke several
languages fluently and
graduated from Harvard
with first-class
honours.While on military
service, the army also
commissioned him to write
a manual on Icelandic
grammar.He already
started writing musical
arrangements as a
student, and from his
30th year arranged and
composed for the Boston
Pops Orchestra. Such
melodiesas Serenata, The
Typewriter, Sleigh Ride
and Buglers
Holiday made him world
famous. His best-known
work, Blue Tango, reached
number one in the US
charts in 1952, and it
sold more than a million
copies. In 1975, a year
after hisdeath, he was
given a star at the Walk
of Fame in Hollywood.Most
of his works last no
longer than three
minutes, about the
maximum length of a
single at that time. One
work that lasts longer is
his 1953 Piano Concerto
in C for piano and
orchestra.The first
performance was in
Chicago, conducted by the
composer and with Eugene
List at the piano.
However, after three
performances he was no
longer happy with the
work and withdrew it. He
always intended to revise
it, but never got round
to it. Itwas only in 1989
that the Anderson family
decided to republish the
work.This three-part
composition is on the one
hand characterised by a
careless elegance, but on
the other one can hear
the influence of
Rachmaninoff, Copland,
Gershwin, and
evenBeethoven and Mozart,
as well as the Viennese
classics.Anderson used
the sonata form for the
first movement. It ends
with a cadenza that
carries us on into the
second part (in e minor).
The third part is a
typically cheerful
American folk dance in2/4
time, a so-called Hoe
Down, with a lilting,
lyrical passage as its
middle section. At the
end comes a solo passage
followed by a rapid
close.In this piano
concerto, Anderson
combines a rigidly
classical form of
composition with simple
andappealing themes and
elements from light
music. So this work is a
perfect synthesis of
light music and what is
called serious music, in
the same way as
Gershwins
Rhapsody in Blue. A work
that can be played
equally well in a
concerthall, at an
open-air concert or even
a pop
concert.

In a blind fury, all the

brothers beaten death

abbey church is in
flames. A frantic and
desperate escape begins.
Abbot Bordier and a
handful of brothers make
their getaway via the
River Saar, adjacent to
the abbey, to the
neighbouring village of
Bous. They survive, but
their life--the

While they flee towards
Prague and the sanctuary

the abbey at Wadgassen is
razed to the ground and
becomes a stone quarry.
The desert blooms once

As peace returns to the

The
forerunner of the Bottle
Dance was written for the
Blue Danube Harmonica
Band in the early 1960s.
Later, at the instigation
of the excellent folk
dance choreographer
Miklós Manninger, an
arrangement for wind band
was prepared, in order to
widen the ensemble s
repertoire of German
national pieces by the
addition of a Hungarian
dance. The production
scored a resounding
success not only with the
audience but also with
the musicians who
performed in it, with the
result that before long
the composer prepared
from the Bottle Dance an
independent work for wind
ensemble - a showy piece,
virtuosic in its effect
yet easily playable. The
youth orchestra
arrangement is a
simplified andshortened
version of the work for
full-scale orchestra.
Antal Farkas
(1925-1992) komponierte
hauptsächlich für
Blasorchester und
Bläser-Kammerensembles
. Der Flaschentanz
gehört zu seinen
beliebtesten Werken. Der
Vorläufer des
Stückes entstand in
den frühen 1960er
Jahren für
Akkordeonorchester. Auf
Initiative des
ausgezeichneten
Volkstanzchoreographen
Miklós Manninger fand
später auch eine
Bearbeitung für
Blasorchester statt.
Nicht nur beim Publikum,
auch bei den
ausführenden Musikern
hatte das Stück
durchschlagenden Erfolg,
deshalb komponierte
Farkas vom Flaschentanz
bald darauf ein
eigenständiges -
eindrucksvolles, virtuos
wirkendes - und dennoch
leicht spielbares - Werk
für Blasorchester. Die
Bearbeitung für

vereinfachte und
verkürzte Fassung der

Avalonâ€
Long Live the
King is a medieval
fantasy piece depicting
the Isle of Avalon where
the mystical sword
Excalibur of King Arthur
was forged. Composer
Tyler Arcari unearths a
solid piece for young
bands that is both bold
and dramatic. This piece
is sure to spark the
imagination of students
and give them strong
musical content with
which they can develop
their
musicianship. Program
Notes:Avalon–Long
live the King began its
journey as a commission
in honor of a dear friend
and mentor. David Riggs
is one of those band
directors that just seems
timeless. He is a
powerhouse with such a
stacked resume that it is
easy to forget that at
the end of the day he
enjoys taking long bike
rides with his lovely
wife and whittling a
piece of wood just as
much as being a band
director. He has touched
so many lives and
inspired so many people
in our field and beyond.
I was humbled, and
honored, when I was
contacted for the
commission. To David, I
hope that you one day
know how much you mean to
so many people, including
myself.About the
piece:The piece is
written with a little
homage to David’s
long tenure at Avalon
Middle school in Pace,
Florida. He was certainly
treated like a king as

Care should be taken at

dynamic changes at mm.

Avalo
n–Long Live the
King is a medieval
fantasy piece depicting
the Isle of Avalon where
the mystical sword
Excalibur of King Arthur
was forged. Composer
Tyler Arcari unearths a
solid piece for young
bands that is both bold
and dramatic. This piece
is sure to spark the
imagination of students
and give them strong
musical content with
which they can develop
their
musicianship. Program
Notes:Avalon–Long
live the King began its
journey as a commission
in honor of a dear friend
and mentor. David Riggs
is one of those band
directors that just seems
timeless. He is a
powerhouse with such a
stacked resume that it is
easy to forget that at
the end of the day he
enjoys taking long bike
rides with his lovely
wife and whittling a
piece of wood just as
much as being a band
director. He has touched
so many lives and
inspired so many people
in our field and beyond.
I was humbled, and
honored, when I was
contacted for the
commission. To David, I
hope that you one day
know how much you mean to
so many people, including
myself.About the
piece:The piece is
written with a little
homage to David’s
long tenure at Avalon
Middle school in Pace,
Florida. He was certainly
treated like a king as
the band director and
rightly so. It seemed
only fitting to add a
little medieval fantasy.

Notes Elephant is, of
course, inspired by the
incredible mammals of the
same name. Their
column-like legs, long
trunks, and massive
presence will never cease
to amaze; however, it's
their trumpeting that
makes them stand out as
the instrumentalists of
the animal kingdom! In
this selection, an
elephant's slow gate and
general demeanor are
represented by a
methodical tempo and
lumbering texture.
Woodwinds will enjoy the
opportunity to perform
grace notes while
Elephant also offers
exposure to flams for
young percussionists.
At m. 33 the
trumpets and horns
recreate an elephant call
after slipping brown
paper bags, or lunch-bag
mutes, over their bells
(in their bells for horn
players). For the trumpet
players, the mutes can be
enhanced with an
additional balled-up
piece of paper placed at
the bottom of the bag
prior to slipping it over
the bell. Horns should
ball up the bag itself
and experiment with
placement to create the
most realistic tones
without stopping the
instrument. While
specific pitches are
noted, making the best
elephant sounds should
prioritized. Young
students always look
forward to experimenting
with mutes, and this
selection offers an
inexpensive and creative
way to do so at a young
age. Note to the
Conductor This piece can
be used to introduce or
reinforce the finer
points of staccato
playing. While many
students know to play
these notes short in
length, they may need
reminding that they
should also be played
lightly. This also may
allow for opportunities
in emphasizing
contrasting articulation
styles that are in this
piece. Younger students
will likely need a
reasonable amount of
practice in successfully
using the lunch-bag
mutes. Allowing
additional rehearsal time
for this is
recommended. Program

ESSENTIAL
CLASSICS is a collection
of pieces ideally suited
to introduce beginning
bands, whether in or
outside of school, to the
classical repertoire. The
easy arrangements make
the most popular melodies
of all time accessible to
young musicians, without
the frustration of
playing music that is too
difficult for them. Now
they can enjoy music from
instrumental works and
operas to oratorios and
lieder, from Tylman
Susato to George
Gershwin. The pieces are
arranged in ascending
order of difficulty,
coinciding with the
progress students are
making in Volumes 1 and 2
of ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS the
complete method for music
education in schools and
bands. But even without
ESSENTIALELEMENTS,
ESSENTIAL CLASSICS is an
excellent source of
repertoire by itself. In
addition to the music the
individual parts contain
short snippets of
information about the
music, composer and
genre, written in a style
younger players will
understand. The full
score contains more
in-depth information on
the music. No matter how
you use ESSENTIAL
CLASSICS with your band,
your players will love
all the fun and engaging
arrangements it as to
offer.
